Preparing the Way For a Feminist Praxis

Simone de Beauvoir in The Second Sex identifies the philosophical vantage point from which she will survey the situation of women as existentialist. The ways in which she must later compromise that committment to theory in order to remain true to her feminist insights foreshadow recent developments in feminist ethics and epistemology.     

Programming experiments with pocket programmable calculators

The use of programmable calculators as research equipment for stimulus presentation and response recording, in addition to their use in mathematical and statistical analysis, is proposed. The calculators may be used alone or in conjunction with other equipment in programming experiments.     

The relative accessibility of semantic and deep-structure syntactic concepts

Three experiments were conducted to determine the relative accessibility of semantic and deep-structure syntactic concepts. In Experiment 1, which employed a concept-formation task, subjects learned the concept “deep-structure subject” more slowly than the case concept “experiencer.” In Experiments 2 and 3, which employed a new recognition memory procedure, subjects performed more poorly when the sentences to be remembered were differentiated on the basis of deep-structure syntactic relations than when they were differentiated on the basis of semantic relations. These results favor Fillmore’s case grammar, or another semantically based theory, rather than the “standard theory” of Chomsky in a model of linguistic behavior.     

A note on three-valued logic and Tarski theorem on truth definitions

We introduce a notion of semantical closure for theories by formalizing Nepeivoda notion of truth. [10]. Tarski theorem on truth definitions is discussed in the light of Kleene's three valued logic (here treated with a formal reinterpretation of logical constants). Connections with Definability Theory are also established.A first version was prepared for sec. 5-Gnsaga-CNR and presented at the Logic Seminar, Institute of Philosophy, University of Firenze, in the academic year 1978–79.
