Two experiments are reported which investigated how subject gender and time-of-day influenced the estimation of duration and the perception of task-related mental workload. In the first experiment, 24 subjects performed a filled time-estimation task in a constant blacked-out, noise-reduced environment at 0800h, 1200h, 1600h, and 2000h, respectively. In the second experiment, 12 different subjects performed an unfilled time estimation task in similar conditions at 0900h, 1400h, and 1900h. At the termination of all experimental sessions, participants completed the NASA Task Load Index workload assessment questionnaire as a measure of perceived mental workload. Results indicated that physiological response, reflected in body temperature change, followed an expected pattern of sequential increase with time-of-day. However, estimates of duration and the perception of mental workload showed no significant effects for time-of-day. In each of the experiments there were significant differences in time estimation and mental workload response contingent on the gender of the participant. These results are interpreted in light of the previous positive findings for circadian fluctuation in performance efficiency and the equivocal findings of a gender difference in time estimation. A unifying account of these collective results is given based on gender by time-of-day interactional effects. A number of investigators have suggested that affective states influence the focus of attention. One recent proposal is that negative moods increase self-focus. This review considers the evidence that bears on this hypothesis. Conceptual issues pertaining to the construct of self-focus are discussed first. Next, the various parameters that influence attentional focus are presented in order to provide a way of organizing the mood/selffocus literature. Studies that have used state measures of mood and self-focus are considered in this context. Utrecht Biophysics Research Institute, Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands Subjects were asked to match the speeds of two moving random-dot patterns seen through circular apertures. The speed of one pattern that moved horizontally toward the right of a computer screen changed continuously. The speed of this pattern represented the target. It was to be matched with the speed of the second pattern, which moved in the opposite direction. The subject controlled the speed of the second pattern by means of an isometric joystick. The distance between the apertures on the screen as well as the subject’s distance from the screen served as experimental parameters. In this way, the effects of both spatialand temporal transients of pattern speed on human tracking performance were studied. To avoid anticipation by the subject, the amplitude and the frequency of the target pattern speed changed pseudorandomly. The accuracy with which the subject performed the matching task was influenced by the mean pattern speed and the parameters of the visual field. Within lower velocity ranges, the subject’s sensitivity to the instantaneous speed differences varied according to Weber’s law. The cross-correlation of the velocity time courses decreased when the mean speed of the target pattern was increased. Two stimulus parameters had a strong influence on the modulation of the correlation value: (1) the angular size of the stimulus on the retina and (2) the retinal eccentricity of the stimulus.  相似文献

Among adult rats, gustatory stimuli are easily associated with illness, but not with external unconditioned stimuli such as footshock. Recent evidence indicates, however, that this cue-to-consequence specificity may vary ontongenetically. The present studies examined the acquisition of an aversion to a taste paired with footshock in 5- and 15-day-old rats. Consistent with previous reports, 5-day-old rats avoided the taste that preceded footshock, while 15-day-old subjects did not express an aversion to the taste paired with footshock. Exposure to the training context for either 1 or 5 h prior to conditioning disrupted taste-footshock conditioning in the 5-day-old subjects. For the 15-day-old subjects, 1 h of pre-conditioning exposure to the training context had no effect on conditioning, whereas a longer duration of preexposure promoted conditioning to the taste cue. The results suggest ontogenetic differences in stimulus selection.  相似文献

The caudal portion of the hypoglossal nucleus (nXIIts) contains the motor neurons that control the syrinx in songbirds. In canaries, song occurs seasonally, is principally produced by males, and appears to be produced predominantly by muscles on the left side of the syrinx. The present study measures the effect of seasonal change and manipulation of testosterone levels on synapse number and morphology in nXIIts in adult female canaries. We find that synapse density is lower in testosterone-treated birds than in control birds and lower in fall than in spring. The number of vesicles per presynaptic profile increases in the spring as a result of a general increase in this measure in all synapses. The number of vesicles per presynaptic profile also increases with testosterone treatment, primarily due to an increase in the proportion of synapses associated with unusually high vesicle counts. Together, these changes suggest that large reserves of neurotransmitter may be necessary to sustain singing. Several ultrastructural differences between hemispheres are found. Postsynaptic thickenings are longer, and postsynaptic processes are larger on the left side than on the right side. In the spring, there are more vesicles per synapse on the left than on the right, but this lateralization is reversed in the fall. Thus, lateralization of song production is associated with lateral asymmetries in synapse morphology. These hemispheric differences are relatively small, like those seen at the light microscope level, encouraging further consideration of peripheral as well as CNS sources of functional lateralization. The seasonal and testosterone-induced changes in synapse number and morphology may be components of the periodic reorganization of canary vocalization.  相似文献

This study examined the relations among physical fitness, body image, and locus of control. The Hall-Physical Fitness Test Profile, the Winstead and Cash Body Self-relations Questionnaire (BSRQ) and the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale were administered to 243 freshmen. Women were significantly more positive about their physical appearance than men. Men were more positive about their physical fitness than women. Men were more physically fit than women. Men and women scoring in the internal direction viewed the physical fitness domain of their body image positively. Unlike men, internally oriented women had more positive perceptions of the health aspect of their body image. Physically fit men and women had positive attitudes toward the physical fitness component of their body image. Physically fit men differed from physically fit women in that men were more internal and held more positive attitudes toward the physical health dimension of their body images.  相似文献
