The purpose of this study was to determine if parents and teachers differed in their views of adolescent storm and stress, and to examine the relations of these reported perceptions with parenting and teaching behaviors. Subjects were parents and teachers of middle and high school students in three school districts in the Midwest. Storm and stress beliefs were identified as parents' and teachers' perceptions of conflict, moodiness, and risk-taking behavior. Scales assessing classic/conforming and positive adolescent behaviors also were included. Self-report assessments of parenting and teaching were administered as well. Results indicated that whereas both parents and teachers held storm and stress beliefs, teachers maintained stronger perceptions than parents. Teachers also endorsed higher classic/conforming and lower positive behaviors than did parents. The results further indicated that parents' perceptions of storm and stress were related to their degree of parental responsiveness; but teachers' perceptions were not related to their teaching style. These results suggest that stereotypic beliefs of the adolescent period continue to be maintained, and that these may influence how adults interact with adolescents. 相似文献

Assessors from 3 continents worked together on a single multimethod case study. Their goal was to hold the client at the center and forefront of their attitudes and thinking as each assessor focused on a specific measure or group of measures. The adult client requested a neuropsychological assessment and completed a full battery of cognitive measures as well as the MMPI–2, the Rorschach, and the Wartegg. A basic tenet of collaborative/therapeutic assessment holds that the client is a full partner in the assessment process; he or she is also seen as the final arbiter of the usefulness of the ideas derived. With that in mind, the client worked with the lead assessor to create 6 questions she wished answered by the assessment. Feedback and discussion occurred in a number of ways: through discussion sessions with the lead assessor that included extended inquiry; individualized letters from the other assessors, each addressing her 6 questions; a summary letter from the lead assessor; and a metaphorical, therapeutic story that stressed key findings from the assessment. Results converged powerfully, with similar findings from each assessor. The client stated that she felt heard and understood in the process, even by individuals who she had never met personally. 相似文献

Late‐life depression (LLD) has detrimental effects on family caregivers that may be compounded when caregivers believe that depressive behaviors are volitional or within the patient's capacity to control. In this study we examined three person‐centered caregiver attributions that place responsibility for LLD on the patient (i.e., character, controllability, and intention), and the impact of such attributions on levels of general caregiver burden and burden specific to patient depressive symptoms. Participants were 212 spouses and adult children of older adults enrolled in a depression treatment study. Over one third of caregivers endorsed character attributions, which significantly predicted greater levels of both general and depression‐specific burden. Intention attributions were significantly associated with general burden, but not depression‐specific burden. Contrary to our expectation, controllability attributions did not predict either type of burden. Our findings suggest that the assessment of family caregiver attributions for LLD may be useful in identifying caregivers at risk for burden and subsequent health effects, as well as those who may need education and support to provide effective care to a vulnerable population of older adults. 相似文献

Using a multi-group cross-sectional design, we explored self-concept related to parental role salience and enactment in 53
young women (14 to 24 years) with knowledge they were either carriers, non-carriers, or could be a carrier of fragile X syndrome
(FXS). Parental role salience included the participants’ desire “to be a mother” and the importance they placed on this role.
Enactment focused on the participants’ views regarding ways to become a mother (reproductive options), parenting a child affected
by FXS, and the development of partner relationships (marriage). Participants completed the FXS Adolescent Interview and the
FX-Visual Analog Scale. Participants’ knowledge of their genetic risk status appears to have influenced both salience and
enactment of the parental role, and the effect varied based on carrier status. For many, knowledge of genetic risk appears
to have led to reappraisal, redefinition, and re-engagement with the goal of becoming a parent. This process was prominent
in those who were carriers and less so in those who were at-risk, and it did not typically occur in those who were non-carriers.
Findings offer valuable insight into the impact of genetic risk information on developing perceptions of the parental role
and offer new directions for genetic counseling with adolescents and young women with a family history of FXS. 相似文献

Little is known about how and what genetic risk information parents communicate to their children and even less is known about
what children hear and remember. To address this void, we explored how genetic risk information was learned, what information
was given and who primarily provided information to adolescent girls and young adult women in families with fragile X syndrome.
We explored three levels of risk knowledge: learning that fragile X syndrome was an inherited disorder, that they could be
a carrier, and for those who had been tested, actual carrier status. These data were collected as part of a study that also
explored adolescent self concept and age preferences about when to inform about genetic risk. Those findings have been presented
separately. The purpose of this paper is to present the communication data. Using a multi-group cross-sectional design this
study focused on girls ages 14–25 years from families previously diagnosed with fragile X syndrome, 1) who knew they were
carriers (n = 20), 2) noncarriers (n = 18), or 3) at-risk to be carriers (n = 15). For all three stages of information the majority of the study participants were informed by a family member. We identified
three different communication styles: open, sought information, and indirect. The content of the remembered conversations
varied based on the stage of genetic risk information being disclosed as well as the girls’ knowledge of her own carrier status.
Girls who had been tested and knew their actual carrier status were more likely to report an open communication pattern than
girls who knew only that they were at-risk. 相似文献

The increasing demand for voluntarily donated blood has generated research concerned with the development of commitment to regular blood donation. Taking a developmental perspective, this paper explores the longitudinal impact of background, situational, and dispositional factors measured at one's first donation. Questionnaire responses from a sample of first-time donors are analyzed and logistic regression analysis is employed to predict successive “continuation decisions” (the decisions to donate twice, three times, and four times). Results suggest that factors may change in their magnitude and direction of impact across the donor's career. Externally focused social pressures and rewards are dominant at the early stages and self-originating factors at the later stages. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed. 相似文献

Bales's revised interaction category analyses (1970) were done from audio tapes of 77 four-person discussion groups: 46 mixed-sex groups, 15 female groups, and 16 male groups. Each group discussed three cases for a total of 35 minutes. The hypothesis tested was that females in mixed-sex groups would suppress their level of “task” contribution and engage in higher levels of “socioemotional” contributions when compared to the performance of women in one-sex groups. Males were also predicted to become more sex-role stereotyped in mixed-sex groups, showing the opposite effect. Results showed large sex differences, regardless of group composition, in the direction of traditional sex roles. The effect of group composition, however, was opposite to that predicted. An effect of an experimental intervention during the second discussion topic on subsequent sex-role performance was also found. Implications for education are discussed. 相似文献

Past research on the role of appraisal purpose in the appraisal decision-making process has concentrated on the motivational role of purpose. Research has found that raters are less willing to give poor ratings when appraisals are to be used for some purposes rather than others. The present paper describes two experiments which explore how appraisal purpose might affect rater cognitive activities as well. The first experiment investigated how appraisal purpose and outcomes affect how raters differentially utilize information to make appraisal decisions. Few differences were found. The second experiment investigated how raters differentially search for performance information to make appraisal decisions for different purposes and outcomes. Raters were found to search for more comparative information when they had to select one of several ratees for some treatment. The results also indicated a discrepancy between how information is collected and how it is used. Implications for defining the role of purpose in the appraisal process, as well as for recent process approaches to performance appraisal, are discussed. 相似文献
