In previous studies claiming to demonstrate that great apes understand the goals of others, the apes could potentially have been using subtle behavioral cues present during the test to succeed. In the current studies, we ruled out the use of such cues by making the behavior of the experimenter identical in the test phase of both the experimental and control conditions; the only difference was the preceding “context.” In the first study, apes interpreted a human’s ambiguous action as having the underlying goal of opening a box, or not, based on that human’s previous actions with similar boxes. In the second study, chimpanzees learned that when a human stood up she was going to go get food for them, but when a novel, unexpected event happened, they changed their expectation—presumably based on their understanding that this new event led the human to change her goal. These studies suggest that great apes do not need concurrent behavioral cues to infer others’ goals, but can do so from a variety of different types of cues—even cues displaced in time. 相似文献

Recently, we showed that salience affects initial saccades only in a static stimulus environment; subsequent saccades were unaffected by salience but, instead, were directed in line with task requirements (Siebold, van Zoest, & Donk, PLoS ONE 6(9): e23552, 2011). Yet multiple studies have shown that people tend to fixate salient regions more often than nonsalient ones when they are looking at images—in particular, when salience is defined by dynamic changes. The goal of the present study was to investigate how oculomotor selection beyond an initial saccade is affected by salience as derived from changing, as opposed to static, stimuli. Observers were presented with displays containing two fixation dots, one target, one distractor, and multiple background elements. They were instructed to fixate on one of the fixation dots and make a speeded eye movement to the target, either directly or preceded by an initial eye movement to the other fixation dot. In Experiment 1, target and distractor differed in orientation contrast relative to the background, such that one was more salient than the other, whereas in Experiments 2 and 3, the orientation contrast between the two elements was identical. Here, salience was implemented by a continuous luminance flicker or by a difference in luminance contrast, respectively, which was presented either simultaneously with display onset or contingent upon the first saccade. The results showed that in all experiments, initial saccades were strongly guided by salience, whereas second saccades were consistently goal directed if the salience manipulation was present from display onset. However, if the flicker or luminance contrast was presented contingent upon the initial saccade, salience effects were reinstated. Motion parallax is a composite of five transformations demonstrated to be effective in adult judgments of rotation direction in polar motion projections of a horizontal row of dots rotating in depth. The effectiveness of these transformations as a function of age was tested by presenting six such motion projections to first graders (age = 6 years), seventh graders (age = 13 years), and college students (age = 19 years). Identical age functions were obtained for judged rotation direction from the four motion projections representing (1) Velocity, corresponding to the traditional definition of motion parallax as differential velocity, (2) Velocity plus differences between ratios of instantaneous displacement to instantaneous acceleration for dots on the near and far sides of the rotation axis ( Difference), (3) Velocity, Difference, and a gradient across the row of ratios, and (4) all transformations. First graders, unable to use horizontal transformations, performed at chance on these four projections, while older students made correct judgments. Order, separated from Velocity for the first time, resulted in chance performance at all ages, while Direction, also separated from Velocity for the first time, resulted in veridical judgments in only 4 of 24 college students. 相似文献

The impact of benign breast biopsy (BBB) on distress and perceptions of risk for breast cancer (BC) was examined. Interviews were conducted with 100 women shortly after notification of biopsy results and 4 and 8 months post-BBB. Compared with matched healthy comparison (HC) women without BBB, the BBB group evidenced greater BC-specific distress at baseline. BC-specific distress declined after BBB, remaining elevated relative to the HC group at the 8-month follow-up. Dispositional (optimism, informational coping style), demographic (education), clinical (family history of BC), and cognitive (BC risk perception) variables were associated with baseline levels of BC-specific distress or persistence of distress.
