Gender differences in object location memory in a real three-dimensional environment 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In this preliminary study we investigate gender differences in object location memory. Our purpose is to extend the results about object location memory obtained in laboratory settings to a real 3-D environment and to further distinguish the specific components involved in this kind of memory by considering the strategies adopted to perform the task. To do this, we join the three-level model of spatial representations (landmark, route, and survey) proposed by Siegel and White (1975) with the three subcomponents of spatial memory (what, where, and what + where) identified by Postma and De Haan (1996). We adopted the object relocation task devised by Postma and De Haan (1996), adapted to a real environment. Seven common objects were placed on the floor of a cylindrical room. Sixty-four males and 64 females were asked to memorize the spatial layout. Next, the experimenter moved the objects to a different position along with seven new objects and the participants had to relocate the original objects to their initial positions. In line with Postma, Izendoorn, and De Haan (1998), we found no gender difference in object recognition, and in recalling absolute distance and categorical spatial relations; however males were better than females in recalling the distance between objects and the size of the layout. Overall, the data show a male advantage in some components of spatial cognition closely linked to the encoding of the metric structure of the spatial relationships at both route and survey level. 相似文献

A cognitive style marked by emphasis on autonomy has been linked to negative outcomes throughout the life span. Two preliminary studies are presented that examined factors on a measure of autonomy (Personal Style Inventory‐Revised) in relation to propensity for suicidal behavior (Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire‐14; SBQ‐14). Perfectionism, B = .15, SE = 0.03, p < .01, and Defensive Separation, B = .04, SE = 0.01, p ≤ .01, predicted SBQ‐14 in younger adults. Need for Control, B = .234, SE = 0.10, p < .05, predicted SBQ‐14 in older adults. Findings suggest that aspects of autonomy may be relevant to understanding suicidal behavior; however, more research is needed examining the association between autonomy and suicidal behavior in the context of depression. Abstract The relationship of diabetes knowledge to regimen compliance and metabolic control was examined in a sample of pregnant women with preexisting insulin-dependent and noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (N = 27) and women who developed gestational diabetes during pregnancy (N = 45). Subjects completed self-report measures of diabetes knowledge and compliance with their diabetic regimen and blood glucose levels were monitored. Knowledge was positively, although modestly, related to dietary compliance, compliance with insulin administration and insulin reaction management recommendations, as well as fasting blood glucose levels. Findings suggest that among pregnant women, efforts to increase knowledge of diabetes specific to pregnancy may result in some improvement in selected aspects of the diabetic regimen. 相似文献

Children raised in the profound deprivation associated with institutionalization are at elevated risk for negative outcomes
across a host of social and cognitive domains. This risk appears to be mitigated by early foster care or adoption into a family
setting. Although pervasive developmental problems have been noted in a substantial proportion of previously institutionalized
children, marked variation exists in the nature and severity of these deficits. Increasing evidence suggests that institutional
deprivation impacts the developing brain, potentially underlying the wide range of outcomes with which it is associated. In
the current review we examine the neural consequences of institutionalization and genetic factors associated with differences
in outcome in an effort to characterize the consequences of early deprivation at a neurobiological level. Although the effects
of institutional deprivation have been studied for more than 50 years much remains unanswered regarding the pathways through
which institutionalization impacts child development. Through a more complete and nuanced assessment of the neural correlates
of exposure and recovery as well as a better understanding of the individual factors involved we will be better able to delineate

High levels of perfectionism have been observed in major depression, anxiety disorders and eating disorders. Though few studies have compared levels of perfectionism across these disorders, there is reason to believe that different dimensions of perfectionism may be involved in eating disorders than in depression or anxiety [Bardone-Cone, A. The present study compared patients with major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders on dimensions of perfectionism. Concern over Mistakes was elevated in each of the patient groups while Pure Personal Standards was only elevated in the eating disorder sample. Doubts about Actions was elevated in both patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and eating disorders, but not in depressed patients. Analyses of covariance indicated that Concern over Mistakes accounted for most of the variance in the relationship of perfectionism to these forms of psychopathology. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to establish demographically adjusted normative data for the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) in an Australian context. RBANS data from 172 healthy Australian community dwelling adults enrolled in the “Using our Brains” (UoB) Brain Tissue Donor program between April 2002 and September 2005 were included in this study. The present study group differed from the original North American normative sample on all 12 subtests and five RBANS indices. Education and to a lesser degree age were related to RBANS performance. The present study provides complementary RBANS normative data for clinicians and researchers when interpreting RBANS results for Australian individuals closely matching those reported in this study. 相似文献

Chen, Lakshminarayanan, and Santos (2006) claim to show in three choice experiments that monkeys react rationally to price and wealth shocks, but, when faced with gambles, display hallmark, human-like biases that include loss aversion. Sexualization is a defense mechanism frequently referred to in clinical psychoanalytic literature. Despite this, there is no research linking the theoretical nature of this observed phenomenon to social or neurobiological theory. This discussion paper proposes an interaction between social learning and neural maturation in the development of sexualized tendencies. When anxiety within peer interactions is alleviated repeatedly through sexualized behavior, learned associations develop. This explanation allows understanding and empathy for individuals demonstrating a broad spectrum of sexualized responses since such learning is argued to be functional within their historic social climate. 相似文献
