Recent reports have claimed that observers show accurate knowledge of the mean size of a group of similar objects, a finding that has been interpreted to suggest that sets of multiple objects are represented in terms of their statistical properties, such as mean size (Ariely, 2001; Chong & Treisman, 2003, 2005a, 2005b). In the present study, we directed visual attention to a single set member and found that mean estimations were modulated according to the size of the attended item, regardless of whether size was the relevant search criterion (Experiment 1) or not (Experiment 2). These findings suggest that observers do not always accurately average together the entire set, and that instead the average is either biased by the features of the attended item, or based on a short-cut strategy of extracting the mean of a smaller subset. 相似文献

Health promoting messages can be framed in terms of the gains that are associated with healthy behaviour, or the losses that are associated with unhealthy behaviour. In this study, we examined the influence of self‐efficacy to quit smoking on the effects of gain framed and loss framed anti‐smoking messages in a randomized controlled trial among 539 adult smokers. Participants with a high self‐efficacy to quit smoking reported higher levels of motivation to quit smoking after receiving a loss framed message than after receiving a gain framed message or no message. For these participants receiving a gain framed message did not result in a higher motivation to quit smoking than receiving no message. For participants with a low self‐efficacy to quit smoking there were no differences in motivation to quit smoking between the gain framed message condition, loss framed message condition and control condition. We describe an fMRI experiment examining the functional connectivity (FC) between regions of the brain associated with semantic and phonological processing. We wished to explore whether L-Dopa administration affects the interaction between language network components in semantic and phonological categorization tasks, as revealed by FC. We hypothesized that L-Dopa would decrease FC due to restriction of the semantic network. During two test sessions (placebo and L-Dopa) each participant performed two fMRI runs, involving phonological and semantic processing. A number of brain regions commonly activated by the two tasks were chosen as regions if interest: left inferior frontal, left posterior temporal and left fusiform gyri, and left parietal cortex. FC was calculated and further analyzed for effects of either the drug or task. No main effect for drug was found. A significant main effect for task was found, with a greater average correlation for the phonological task than for the semantic task. These findings suggest that language areas are activated in a more synchronous manner for phonological than for semantic tasks. This may relate to the fact that phonological processes are mediated to a greater extent within language areas, whereas semantic tasks likely require greater interaction outside of the language areas. Two tasks where failures of cognitive control are especially prevalent are task-switching and spatial Simon task paradigms. Both tasks require considerable strategic control for the participant to avoid the costs associated with switching tasks (task-switching paradigm) and to minimize the influence of spatial location (Simon task). In the current study, we assessed whether the use of a self-regulatory strategy known as "implementation intentions" would have any beneficial effects on performance in each of these task domains. Forming an implementation intention (i.e., an if-then plan) is a self-regulatory strategy in which a mental link is created between a pre-specified future cue and a desired goal-directed response, resulting in facilitated goal attainment (Gollwitzer in European Review of Social Psychology, 4, 141-185, 1993, American Psychologist, 54, 493-503, 1999). In Experiment 1, forming implementation intentions in the context of a task-switching paradigm led to a reduction in switch costs. In Experiment 2, forming implementation intentions reduced the effects of spatial location in a Simon task for the stimulus specified in the implementation intention. Results supported the prediction that the need for high levels of cognitive control can be alleviated to some degree by making if-then plans that specify how one responds to that critical stimuli. 相似文献

This study of 130 depressed older adults and their spouses or adult children examined the impact of caregiver burden specific to patients' depressive symptoms on patients' response to antidepressant treatment. Primary care patients completed medical, psychiatric, and neuropsychological assessments prior to treatment, and interviews were conducted with their identified family member. As hypothesized, caregivers' depression-specific burden predicted greater depression severity for the patient at the 6th week of treatment after accounting for patients' pretreatment characteristics, caregivers' depressive symptoms, and caregivers' relationship satisfaction. Future research may identify family attitudes and behaviors that stem from burden and compromise older adults' ability to recover from depression. 相似文献

This article describes AppMonitor, a Microsoft Windows-based client-side logging tool that records user actions in unmodified Windows applications. AppMonitor allows researchers to gain insights into many facets of interface interaction such as command use frequency, behavioral patterns prior to or following command use, and methods of navigating through systems and data sets. AppMonitor uses the Windows SDK libraries to monitor both low-level interactions, such as "left mouse button pressed" and "Ctrl-F pressed," as well as high-level "logical" actions, such as menu selections and scrollbar manipulations. The events recorded are configurable, allowing researchers to perform broad or targeted studies. No user input is required to manage logging, allowing participants to seamlessly conduct everyday work while their actions are monitored. The system currently supports logging in Microsoft Word and Adobe Reader; however, it could be extended for use with any Microsoft Windows-based application. To support other researchers wishing to create multilevel event loggers, we describe AppMonitor's underlying architecture and implementation, and provide a brief example of the data generated during our 4-month trial with six users. 相似文献

University based academic Research Ethics Boards (REB) face the particularly difficult challenge of trying to achieve representation
from a variety of disciplines, methodologies and research interests. Additionally, many are currently facing another decision
– whether to have students as REB members or not. At Ryerson University, we are uniquely situated. Without a medical school
in which an awareness of the research ethics review process might be grounded, our mainly social science and humanities REB
must also educate and foster awareness of the ethics review process throughout the academic community. Our Board has had and
continues to have students as active members. While there are challenges to having students as Board members, these are clearly
outweighed by the advantages, for both the academic community and the future of ethically sound research in the social sciences
and humanities. Moreover, the challenges are often based on misconceptions and can be easily overcome through increased education
and understanding of the research ethics review process by the academic community at large. The purpose of this paper is to
describe and discuss the experiences, advantages and challenges of having students as REB members. The advantages of having
students as REB members include the following: (1) Students are the proposed participants in many of our reviewed protocols
and student members may illuminate unique issues of participation. (2) Students are active and highly engaged members of the
REB. (3) Having students on the REB enhances awareness of research ethics within the University. (4) Student REB members have
an opportunity to mentor other students and provide leadership for both undergraduate and graduate students. (5) Students
are more vigorously recruited than faculty members and often apply for student positions with enthusiasm and preparation.
(6) In creating an atmosphere of excellence in research, engaging students at the beginning of their research career will
help in creating tomorrow’s leaders in research and research ethics. The challenges of having students as REB members include
the following: (1) Faculty members may be uneasy regarding the prospect of students reviewing protocols. (2) Faculty members
may be concerned about confidentiality and respect with students reviewing faculty research protocols. (3) There may be an
increased burden for students who serve as members on an REB. (4) There is concern that students will offer less continuous
service to the REB. (5) There is a common misconception that students do not have the experience to carry out ethical reviews.
While there are challenges from faculty members and others regarding having students as REB members, these challenges are
often based on misconceptions about the nature of the REB work and the ethics review process in general. These challenges
are also often based on the misconception of the ethics review process as one of peer review and evaluation, instead of a
community-based and inclusive process. Having student members is a long-term strategy for both overcoming the misconceptions
of the REB as a “necessary evil” and for fostering an awareness of the imperative for ethically sound research in the social

Theories of objects recognition, scene perception, and neural representation of scenes imply that jumbling a coherent scene should reduce change detection. However, evidence from the change detection literature questions whether jumbling affects change detection. The experiments reported here demonstrate that jumbling does, in fact, reduce change detection. In Experiments 1 and 2, change detection was better for normal scenes than for jumbled scenes. In Experiment 3, inversion failed to interfere with change detection, demonstrating that the disruption of surface and object continuity inherent to jumbling is responsible for reduced change detection. These findings provide a crucial commonality between change detection research and theories of scene perception and neural representation. We also discuss why previous research may have failed to find effects of jumbling. 相似文献
