This article uses a Canadian national sample to examine the relationship between conventional religious belief, church attendance, and belief in paranormal phenomena. Greater religious belief is strongly associated with greater paranormal belief. Church attendance (and other measures of religious participation) are only weakly associated with paranormal belief until conventional religious belief is statistically controlled; once this is done, greater church attendance is strongly associated with lowered paranormal belief. Together, these two religious variables explain about one-quarter of the variance in paranormal belief, making them the strongest predictors that have yet to be identified. 相似文献

Semantic understanding of numbers and related concepts can be dissociated from rote knowledge of arithmetic facts. However, distinctions among different kinds of semantic representations related to numbers have not been fully explored. Working with numbers and arithmetic requires representing semantic information that is both analogue (e.g., the approximate magnitude of a number) and symbolic (e.g., what / means). In this article, the authors describe a patient (MC) who exhibits a dissociation between tasks that require symbolic number knowledge (e.g., knowledge of arithmetic symbols including numbers, knowledge of concepts related to numbers such as rounding) and tasks that require an analogue magnitude representation (e.g., comparing size or frequency). MC is impaired on a variety of tasks that require symbolic number knowledge, but her ability to represent and process analogue magnitude information is intact. Her deficit in symbolic number knowledge extends to a variety of concepts related to numbers (e.g., decimal points, Roman numerals, what a quartet is) but not to any other semantic categories that we have tested. These findings suggest that symbolic number knowledge is a functionally independent component of the number processing system, that it is category specific, and that it is anatomically and functionally distinct from magnitude representations. 相似文献

Emotion dysregulation is believed to be a key factor in anxiety disorders. However, the empirical basis for this view is limited,
particularly in children and adolescents. This study aimed to examine whether anxious children display negative emotional
hyper-reactivity and deficits in emotion regulation, using a new task that presents ambiguous situations with potentially
threatening meanings. Forty-nine children diagnosed with either generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, or separation
anxiety disorder, were compared with 42 non-anxious controls. Relative to controls, anxious children demonstrated (a) greater
intensity and frequency of negative emotional responses, (b) deficits in using reappraisal in negative emotional situations
and corresponding deficits in reappraisal self-efficacy, and (c) greater reliance on emotion regulation strategies that increase
the risk of functional impairment, intense negative emotion, and low emotion regulation self-efficacy. Implications for the

The present study aimed to update previous meta-analyses of gCBT, and focus specifically on recent studies in which the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to assess outcome. PsycINFO, PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane were searched for eligible studies. Both randomized controlled trials (RTC, k = 9) and non-RTCs (k = 1) published since 2000 were included. On the BDI large significant effect sizes were found for gCBT compared with treatment as usual (TAU, d = 4.64), wailing list controls (WLC, d = 1.20), and both of these comparison conditions combined with studies of well-defined alternative treatments (ALT, d = 1.61). On the BDI a moderate effect size (d = 0.53) was found for comparisons of gCBT and ALT groups. gCBT also had large and significant effects on depressive cognition assessed with the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire and the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale compared with WLC and ALT comparison groups (d = 2.66). This meta-analysis shows that gCBT is a robust intervention for depression in adults. 相似文献

Although attentional control and memory change considerably across the life span, no research has examined how the ability to strategically remember important information (i.e., value-directed remembering) changes from childhood to old age. The present study examined this in different age groups across the life span (N = 320, 5-96 years old). A selectivity task was used in which participants were asked to study and recall items worth different point values in order to maximize their point score. This procedure allowed for measures of memory quantity/capacity (number of words recalled) and memory efficiency/selectivity (the recall of high-value items relative to low-value items). Age-related differences were found for memory capacity, as young adults recalled more words than the other groups. However, in terms of selectivity, younger and older adults were more selective than adolescents and children. The dissociation between these measures across the life span illustrates important age-related differences in terms of memory capacity and the ability to selectively remember high-value information. 相似文献

Understanding the functionally relevant properties of objects is likely facilitated by learning with a critical role for past
experience. However, current evidence is conflicting regarding the effect of prior object exposure on acquisition of object
manipulation skills. This may be due to the influence of life history variables on the capacity to benefit from such experience.
This study assessed effect of task-relevant object exposure on object-mediated problem-solving in 22 gibbons using a raking-in
task. Despite not using tools habitually, 14 gibbons spontaneously used a rake to obtain a reward. Having prior experience
with the rake in an unrewarded context did not improve learning efficiency in males. However, females benefitted significantly
from the opportunity to interact with the rake before testing, with reduced latencies to solution compared to those with no
previous exposure. These results reflect potential sex differences in approach to novelty that moderate the possible benefits
of prior experience. Due to their relatively high energetic requirements, reproductively active females may be highly motivated
to explore potential resources; however, increased investment in developing offspring could make them more guarded in their
investigations. Previous exposure that allows females to learn of an object’s neutrality can offset this cautious exploration. 相似文献

In this study, we examine whether an actual (rather than hypothetical) man being labeled “gay” either by himself or by another
influences American (US) undergraduates’ attributions of the man’s masculinity, femininity, and likeability, replicating (with
refinements) a similar study from the 1970s. One hundred ninety-two male and 591 female undergraduates, almost exclusively
white, in Kentucky observed two gender-typical white men (one very masculine and the other of average masculinity, both low
in femininity, both gay) play a word game on videotape; prior to playing, each man labeled either himself or the other man
as either gay or adopted. Male participants rated the men as less masculine and more feminine than female participants, but
the label used did not differentially influence male and female participants. Both male and female participants rated each
man less masculine and more feminine when labeled gay than when the other man was labeled gay, and rated the more masculine
man less masculine and more feminine when labeled gay than when labeled adopted. Whether either man was labeled by himself
or by the other man, or whether either man was a labeler or in the presence of a self-labeler, had no effect on participants’
ratings of the men’s masculinity or femininity. Both men were rated as likeable across all conditions. While the stereotype
of gay men as more feminine and less masculine than other men appears robust since the 1970 study, the dislike of gay men

This study provides implicit verb causality norms for a corpus of 305 English verbs. A web-based sentence completion study
was conducted, with 96 respondents completing fragments such as “John liked Mary because...” The resulting bias scores are
provided as supplementary material in the Psychonomic Society Archive, where we also present lexical and semantic verb features,
such as the frequency, semantic class and emotional valence. Our results replicate those of previous studies with much smaller
numbers of verbs and respondents. Novel effects of gender and its interaction with verb valence illustrate the type of issues
that can be investigated using stable norms for a large number of verbs. The corpus will facilitate future studies in a range
of areas, including psycholinguistics and social psychology. 相似文献

Social psychologists have recently shown great interest in implicit attitudes, but questions remain as to the boundary conditions under which such attitudes can predict subsequent judgments and behavior, including reactions toward single category members. In two experiments, we demonstrate the predictive validity of two priming-based measures of implicit attitudes, using a lexical decision task developed by Wittenbrink, Judd, and Park (1997) as well as a perceptual identification paradigm pioneered by Payne (2001). Moreover, we show that these effects were moderated by perceived group variability, such that implicit attitudes offered much stronger predictive leverage if the members of the target category (Blacks) were perceived to be homogenous than if they were not. The implications of the present research for the “moderator approach” previously employed in the explicit attitude literature are discussed. 相似文献

A typology of churched and unchurched religions is developed and then used to analyse the status of unchurched spirituality in the United States, Sweden, and Japan. In the United States, churched religions remain strong, while most of those who say they have no religious preference are quite religious, merely unchurched. In Sweden, the lack of participation in the state church seems to be more than offset by a rapid rise in unchurched religion, especially among the young. Japan's celebrated lack of religion is found to be merely a lack of churched religions, as the Japanese are devoted followers of unchurched faiths. In conclusion, the relative lack of authority of unchurched religions is examined. 相似文献
