Stress is a known precipitant for metabolic and neurological diseases, with sensitive periods identified across the developmental continuum from conception to old age. However, the effects of stress may vary depending on the point or points along the developmental trajectory when adversity strikes. Past research has emphasized the consequences of stress on fully developed physiological systems in the brain and periphery, but more recent studies have explored the impact of stress on systems at different stages of maturation, with differential effects being revealed. This review provides an overview of the diverse effects of stress at critical developmental stages and the potential outcomes that may be associated with experiencing environmental adversity during ontogeny. 相似文献

Achieving coherence and integration across staff professional development activities is facilitated when training, coaching
and staff evaluation are guided by a clearly articulated program theory or “theory of change” that describes how skillful
practice promotes desired outcomes. We focus on a theory of change for wraparound, a widely implemented approach to providing
community-based care for children with high levels of mental health and related needs. Training, coaching and staff evaluation
efforts within wraparound programs have typically been linked only very loosely to theory. We argue that wraparound’s unique
history allowed it to evolve with limited theoretical grounding, and we then describe a theory of change for wraparound, focusing
on the major causal routes that are hypothesized to lead to outcomes. Finally, we provide an extended illustration of how
the theory can provide the basis for a coherent and integrated approach to developing the skills and capacities of staff members

Body checking includes any behavior aimed at global or specific evaluations of appearance characteristics. Men and women are believed to express these behaviors differently, possibly reflecting different socialization. However, there has been no empirical test of the impact of gender on body checking. A total of 1024 male and female college students completed two measures of body checking, the Body Checking Questionnaire and the Male Body Checking Questionnaire. Using multiple group confirmatory factor analysis, differential item functioning (DIF) was explored in a composite of these measures. Two global latent factors were identified (female and male body checking severity), and there were expected gender differences in these factors even after controlling for DIF. Ten items were found to be unbiased by gender and provide a suitable brief measure of body checking for mixed gender research. Practical applications for body checking assessment and theoretical implications are discussed. 相似文献

Although job seekers' motivation to process the information encountered during recruitment partially influences recruitment success, little is known about what motivates more thorough information processing. To address this issue, we integrated recruitment and social information processing theories to examine the possibility that diversity cues on recruitment websites influence website viewers' processing of presented information. Utilizing a controlled experiment and a hypothetical organization, Study 1 revealed that both Blacks and Whites spent more time viewing recruitment websites and better recalled website information when the sites included racial diversity cues. These relationships were stronger for Blacks, and organizational attractiveness perceptions mediated these effects for Blacks but not for Whites. Study 2 found similar relationships for Black and White participants viewing real organizational recruitment websites after taking into account perceived organizational attributes and website design effects. This research introduces product retention tendency, a consumer lifestyle trait characterized by an individual's propensity to retain consumption-related possessions. We develop a parsimonious measure of product retention tendency. Next, we report on the results of two studies designed to contrast product retention tendency with clinical compulsive hoarding, examining the relationships between these different types of keeping behavior as related to waste avoidance and product attachment tendencies. It has often been asserted, by both men and women, that men are funnier. We explored two possible explanations for such a
view, first testing whether men, when instructed to be as funny as possible, write funnier cartoon captions than do women,
and second examining whether there is a tendency to falsely remember funny things as having been produced by men. A total
of 32 participants, half from each gender, wrote captions for 20 cartoons. Raters then indicated the humor success of these
captions. Raters of both genders found the captions written by males funnier, though this preference was significantly stronger
among the male raters. In the second experiment, male and female participants were presented with the funniest and least funny
captions from the first experiment, along with the caption author’s gender. On a memory test, both females and males disproportionately
misattributed the humorous captions to males and the nonhumorous captions to females. Men might think men are funnier because
they actually find them so, but though women rated the captions written by males slightly higher, our data suggest that they

The theory of planned behavior suggests attitudes are a product of salient beliefs. This study examined whether aggregating salient beliefs was plausible within a more biologically centered information-processing environment. A neural network was used to examine associations among beliefs relating to exercise intention. Data on intentions and behavioral, normative, and control beliefs from 114 respondents were used to train (by error backpropagation) a neural network to associate beliefs with intention. The R-sup-2 between the network's estimated and self-reported intention was.66. The network's representation comprised 6 belief profiles associated with high, moderate, or low behavioral intention. The neural network accommodated complex relationships among beliefs and belief-intention associations and indicated how high-level constructs such as attitudes may be viewed as the best fit (compromise state) between aroused beliefs. 相似文献
