This essay will focus on the Buddhist metaphysics of experience which is generally glossed over due to the excessive concern for the ultimate goal in Buddhism, nirvīna , and in consequence of which the emphasis has been on the practice of; meditative discipline in aspiration for that goal. Yet neither nirvana nor meditative discipline can be understood properly without examining the full dimension of our ordinary experience. Such an examination should reveal to us the unique ways in which the Buddhist refers to the bounded and unbounded conditions of existence. All this is novel insofar as metaphysics goes and indeed it would have to be a unique form of metaphysics in order to accommodate the dual aspect of existence. The key to this metaphysics lodges in the Buddhist concept of experiential process,1 technically known as pratītyasamutpāda which is variously translated as relational origination, interrelational origination or dependent origination. It refers to the Buddhist concept of causality but, as we shall see, it is a unique concept with more than the usual Western connotation. 相似文献

With the advent of political turmoil in Afghanistan, increasing numbers of Afghan refugee families have been coming to the United States. Both the children and the adults perceive school as the primary resource for their successful transition into U.S. society. The school counselor is in a position to guide Afghan clients by providing them with necessary educational and career information. The historical isolation of Afghanistan and its remote location geographically make this rich and ancient culture unknown to many Americans. This culture has certain significant and unique characteristics that affect the way in which Afghans may adjust. The intention of this study was to improve behavioral modeling's effectiveness by substituting managers for professional trainers and to evaluate the effect on 44 male supervisors using Kirkpatrick's four levels of evaluation: reaction, learning, behavior on the job, and performance. Twenty-two supervisors were trained with six behavior modeling modules and the effect was compared to a control group consisting of 22 supervisors. The research also examined the effects of trainees’ self-esteem and the perceived power of the trainers. The results showed that behavior modeling resulted in favorable reactions and an increase in learning, but did not produce behavior change on the job, or improved performance results. Power and self-esteem did not moderate the training effectiveness. The findings are compared with previous behavior modeling research. The discussion concludes with a recommendation for researchers to identify more complete theoretical models which explain behavioral change on the job (e.g., Maltz's theory of psycho-cybernetics) as opposed to relying solely on Bandura's social learning theory. 相似文献

We examined the concurrent relationship between late adolescent attachment to parents and peers and two broad indices of adolescent adaptation—personal and social identity and adjustment to college. Participants included 130 college freshmen and 123 upperclassmen. Although freshmen were disadvantaged relative to upperclassmen with respect to social and personal-emotional adjustment, there were no group differences on the attachment measures, on the measures of academic adjustment and goal commitment, and on the measure of social identity. Freshmen scored higher on personal identity than did upperclassmen. Women reported less alienation from peers, had more trust and better communication with peers, and had higher scores on personal and social idenitity than men. The attachment variables were significant predictors of personal and social identity. Pervasive relations were also found between attachment and adjustment to college, particularly for the upperclassmen sample. 相似文献

This article addresses the issues facing White counselors in providing services to Native Americans, whose values differ significantly from the dominant culture's. Native Americans have been consistently threatened with cultural assimilation. Previously published recommendations to counselors are reviewed and the relevance and possible uses of traditional Native American healing practices are discussed. One such practice, the vision quest, is described in detail. The field of multidimensional scaling is dominated by models that lack inherent parameters. Correcting parameters have been introduced, e.g. INDSCAL, to increase power of prediction. Although a nonparametirc model with correcting parameters may exhibit a very good fit to data, a parametric model is intrinsically superior. The general parametric model proposed here yields measures of both absolute and relative subjective differences (dissimilarity) in addition to similarity. It is basically unidimensioanal. Rules for combining values of attributes into a single multidimensional value may be applied either to the input or to the output of the model. One of the resulting functions is a generalization of the Eisler-Ekman similarity function. A special case of another function is identical to the Minkowski class of distance functions (including INDSCAL). The model is not limited to pairwise relations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of prospective employers toward hiring ex-offenders based on the nature of the crime committed. Thirty-nine male and 30 female students in a personnel management class at a major Midwestern university were surveyed regarding their attitudes toward hiring persons convicted for the following crimes: kidnapping, armed robbery, homicide, assault and battery (nonsexual), automobile theft, rape, burglary, sale of hard narcotics, forgery, and child molesting. Statistical analyses revealed a significant difference in the total group's rankings of the 10 crimes but no significant differences between males and females. 相似文献
