This brief report describes results from an evaluation of NAMI Basics, a peer-delivered family education program for family
caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness. Over six classes, family members are given information (e.g. education
about mental illness and treatments), skills training (e.g. family communication skills) and advocacy support. We report data
from 36 caregivers who completed pre and posttest instruments measuring self-care, empowerment, and family problem-solving
and communication skills. Results showed significant improvements in self-care, empowerment, and “incendiary” family communication
after participation in the program. Results suggest that NAMI Basics may improve both parental functioning and familial processes.
Implications and future directions are discussed. 相似文献

Using a cross-modal semantic priming paradigm, both experiments of the present study investigated the link between the mental representations of iconic gestures and words. Two groups of the participants performed a primed lexical decision task where they had to discriminate between visually presented words and nonwords (e.g., flirp). Word targets (e.g., bird) were preceded by video clips depicting either semantically related (e.g., pair of hands flapping) or semantically unrelated (e.g., drawing a square with both hands) gestures. The duration of gestures was on average 3,500 ms in Experiment 1 but only 1,000 ms in Experiment 2. Significant priming effects were observed in both experiments, with faster response latencies for related gesture-word pairs than unrelated pairs. These results are consistent with the idea of interactions between the gestural and lexical representational systems, such that mere exposure to iconic gestures facilitates the recognition of semantically related words. 相似文献

Critics argue that adaptive preference (AP) theorists misrepresent oppressed people's reasons for perpetuating their oppression. According to critics, AP theorists assume that people who adapt their preferences to unjust conditions lack the psychic capacities that would allow them to develop their own normative perspectives and/or form appropriate values. The misrepresentation is morally problematic, because it promotes unjustified paternalism and perpetuates colonial stereotypes of third‐world women. I argue that we can imagine a conception of AP that is consistent with acknowledging agency in people who perpetuate their oppression. I offer a weak perfectionist conception of AP that is consistent with recognising agentic capacities in the oppressed. On my conception, APs are preferences incompatible with an agent's basic wellbeing that formed under unjust conditions — and that an agent would reverse upon exposure to better conditions. My conception encourages respectful treatment of the oppressed without requiring us to abandon the feminist political goals the notion of AP is meant to serve. It helps us identify real‐world preferences that are problematically adapted to oppressive conditions and offers an account of why they seem not to be women's ‘true preferences’. 相似文献

We present calculations of the single-particle excitation spectrum for a twodimensional strong-coupling superconductor in a conserving approximation. Spectral weight at low frequency is substantially reduced as the superconducting transition is approached from the normal state. The suppression of low-energy excitations is a consequence of Cooper-pair fluctuations that are described self-consistently in the fluctuation exchange approximation. The static and uniform electromagnetic response provides a measure of the super fluid density and a fully self-consistent indication of the superconducting transition temperature. 相似文献

This paper describes a feasibility study of a peer-delivered prevention intervention to identify mothers at high risk for depression and facilitate engagement in mental health services for their emotional health. Sixteen family peer advocates and their supervisors partnered with academic researchers over a period of 6 months to develop a four-session intervention that focused on identifying symptoms of depression, providing education about depression and treatment, actively linking caregivers to treatment for their own emotional health, and assisting caregivers in becoming active participants in their mental health care. Collaborating with peers to develop the model enhanced its perceived relevance and utility, and resulted in an intervention that was complimentary to their roles and the mission of peer-delivered support services. Peer/professional partnerships may be beneficial for enhancing the feasibility and acceptability of research efforts; the impact of peers’ participation in the current project and the need for future research to develop and study peer-delivered models is discussed. 相似文献

Development ethicists see reducing intrahousehold gender inequality as an important policy aim. However, it is unclear that a minimalist cross‐cultural consensus can be formed around this goal. Inequality on its own may not bring women beneath a minimal welfare threshold. Further, adherents of complementarian metaphysical doctrines may view attempts to reduce intrahousehold inequality as attacks on their worldviews. Complicating the justificatory task is the fact that familiar arguments against intrahousehold inequality, including those from agency and self‐esteem, depart from premises that complementarians reject—premises about the value of independence or the moral irrelevance of gender. I propose that development ethicists should offer complementarianism‐compatible arguments against the norms and practices constitutive of intrahousehold inequality. I develop arguments against two intrahousehold inequality‐supportive practices that depart from complementarian premises. Specifically, I argue that patriarchal risk and gender schemas that devalue women's labor prevent men from discharging complementarian duties to promote women's welfare. 相似文献

Professional family peer advocates are increasingly employed by public mental health systems to deliver family-to-family support
that reduces barriers families face in accessing children’s mental health care. These services, however, are neither uniformly
available nor standardized. This pilot study describes the process, content and context of family-to-family support services.
Simulating a parent seeking services, a trained standardized parent participated as a client in meetings with advocates in
four programs and collected data through structured observations, a structured survey, and session audiotapes. The “walk-through”
process was determined to be feasible and acceptable to family peer advocates as a way of evaluating services. Four family
peer advocates provided an average of 25 services during each 2-session simulation with the standardized parent, including
the following: information and educational support, instruction and skills development, emotional and affirmational support,
instrumental support, and advocacy. Findings also revealed variability in the range of services provided and identified challenges
in aspects of service provision, such as boundaries of advocate roles, availability of confidential service environments,
and addressing crises and parent concerns about child safety. This paper provides the first in-depth look at services provided
by this emerging workforce. 相似文献
