Nano-ethics as NEST-ethics: Patterns of Moral Argumentation About New and Emerging Science and Technology 总被引:6,自引:3,他引:3
There might not be a specific nano-ethics, but there definitely is an ethics of new & emerging science and technology (NEST),
with characteristic tropes and patterns of moral argumentation. Ethical discussion in and around nanoscience and technology
reflects such NEST-ethics. We offer an inventory of the arguments, and show patterns in their evolution, in arenas full of
proponents and opponents. We also show that there are some nano-specific issues: in how size matters, and when agency is delegated
to smart devices. Our overall approach is a pragmatist ethics, and we conclude that struggle (and learning) might be more
productive than models emphasizing consensus.

In order to investigate the relationship between the extent to which clinical fears are prepared and clinically relevant characteristics of these fears (i.e. severity, age of onset and treatment outcome). the records of 63 obsessional and phobic patients were examined. Four independent raters scored the usable records (N = 55) on preparedness. The preparedness scores were combined and related to objective indices of severity (patients' scores on the Fear Survey Schedule, the Zung Depression Scale and the Maudsley Obsessional-Compulsive Inventory, as well as the treatment duration), onset ages and treatment outcomes (pre-treatment minus post-treatment MOCI scores, for a subsample of obsessional patients only). In contrast to earlier studies, it was found that product-moment correlations among preparedness ratings were relatively low and that prepared fears did not make up a majority in the sample. Indices of severity either did not correlate at all or correlated negatively with preparedness ratings. The positive correlation between preparedness and onset ages reached borderline significance. Evidence suggestive of a resistance to treatment of prepared fears was obtained. 相似文献

Images, ranging from visualizations of the nanoscale to future visions, abound within and beyond the world of nanotechnology.
Rather than the contrast between imaging, i.e. creating images that are understood as offering a view on what is out there, and imagining, i.e. creating images offering impressions of how the nanoscale could look like and images presenting visions of worlds that
might be realized, it is the entanglement between imaging and imagining which is the key to understanding what images do.
Three main arenas of entanglement of imag(in)ing and the tensions involved are discussed: production practices and use of
visualizations of the nanoscale; imag(in)ing the future and the present; and entanglements of nanoscience and art. In these
three arenas one sees struggles about which images might stand for nanotechnology, but also some stabilization of the entanglement
of imag(in)ing, for example in established rules in the practices of visualizing the nanoscale. Three images have become iconic,
through the combination of their wide reception and further circulation. All three, the IBM logo, the Foresight Institute’s
Nanogear image, and the so-called Nanolouse, depict actual or imagined technoscientific objects and are thus seen as representing
technoscientific achievements – while marking out territory. 相似文献

The DSM-IV definition of delusion is argued to be unsatisfactory because it does not explain the mechanism for delusion formation and maintenance, it implies that such beliefs are necessarily dysfunctional (pathological), it underestimates the social component to some delusions, and it is inconsistent with research indicating that delusions can be modified through techniques such as contradiction, confrontation, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. However, a well-replicated mathematical model of magical/delusional thinking based on a study of paranormal beliefs and experiences is consistent with the hypothesis that attributional processes play a central role in delusion formation and maintenance. The model suggests attributional processes serve the adaptive function of reducing fear associated with ambiguous stimuli and delusional thinking is on a continuum with nonpathological forms. Based on this collective research an amendment to the definition of delusion is proposed and its clinical implications are addressed. 相似文献

The study of the relation between electromagnetic fields and various psychological phenomena would be enhanced by the measurement and correlation of time series over multiple energy bands. The paper discusses the design and implementation of a computerized multi-energy sensor array (MESA) that detects and records low-frequency energy fluctuations. The current implementation of MESA focuses on the measurement of magnetic fields, infrared and visible light frequencies, and indices of seismic activity. However, MESA is sufficiently flexible to accommodate the measurement of other variables as well, and it can be configured to suit applications in laboratory and field settings. 相似文献

Passion energizes and directs both peaceful and violent ideologically inspired movements. The type of ideological passion that underlies people's political or religious commitment was proposed to moderate the effect of social identity–threatening circumstances on their choice of activist tactics. Ideological passion was defined as a strong inclination toward a loved, valued, and self‐defining cause, ideology, or group in which people invest considerable time and energy. Harmonious ideological passion was expected to promote peaceful activism and nonviolence partly because it is anchored in a strong and secure sense of identity—one that facilitates nondefensiveness in identity‐threatening circumstances. Obsessive ideological passion, in contrast, was expected to engender hatred and aggressive extremism in identity‐threatening circumstances partly because it is anchored in a strong, but insecure, sense of identity. Results from 2 studies, conducted with nationalist activists (N = 114) and devout Muslims (N = 111), supported these hypotheses. Implications for the motivation/passion and intergroup literatures are discussed. 相似文献

Engagement with stakeholders and civil society is increasingly important for new scientific and technological developments.
Preparation of such engagements sets the stage for engagement activities and thus contributes to their outcomes. Preparation
is a demanding task, particularly if the facilitating agent aims for timely engagement related to emerging technologies. Requirements
for such preparation include understanding of the emerging science & technology and its dynamics. Multi-level analysis and
socio-technical scenarios are two complementary tools for constructing productive engagement. Examination of the emergence
of nanotechnologies in the food packaging sector demonstrates how these tools work. In light of recent policy demands for
responsible innovation, but also more generally, the role of organizers of engagement activities is one that deserves reflection
insofar as it can extend beyond that of preparation and facilitation. 相似文献
