Reminder treatments have been shown to facilitate the retrieval of a variety of conditioned responses. Whether or not similar results would occur with an experimental paradigm which involves primarily memory for a stimulus, i.e., where no particular response is specified, is unclear. Accordingly, using Sprague-Dawley rats, we employed a latent inhibition paradigm with a long (10 days) retention interval between sucrose (CS) preexposure and sucrose-illness pairing (training). The results demonstrated a loss of latent inhibition following the 10-day retention interval suggesting "forgetting" of the CS preexposure. However, placing a single reminder exposure to the CS within the preexposure-to-training interval reinstated the preexposure effect. Controls indicated that in the absence of the initial preexposure the reminder per se did not produce latent inhibition. In Experiment I, prior experience with passive-avoidance training followed by latent extinction was given 1, 3, 5, or 15 days before criterion (re) training and an amnesic treatment. It produced nearly complete protection from retrograde amnesia at the three shorter intervals; at the longest interval, amnesia was present but less severe than in a control group without the familiarization. In Experiment II, prior experience was given 1, 5, or 15 days before a noncontingent shock and an amnesic treatment. Evidence of a reactivation of memory was obtained only at the longest interval. Thus, familiarization and reactivation seem to represent different processes. The present study examined the effect of insulin-induced hypoglycemia on 24-h retention of passive avoidance in rats. In the initial experiment, rats received either insulin (50 U/kg) or saline injections 30 min prior to training and testing. Impairments in retention were observed when animals were trained with insulin and tested with saline. This anterograde memory loss was attenuated, however, when insulin was administered prior to both training and testing. A subsequent experiment further explored the disruptive effect of hypoglycemia on memory. Data from this study indicated that lower doses of insulin at training (5 and 10 U/rat) yielded impairments in 24-h retention of passive avoidance. It is concluded that disruption of glucoregulation can produce state-dependent anterograde memory losses in rats. Possible implications for the effects of hypoglycemia on cognitive functioning in humans are discussed. 相似文献

The relation between age-specific postural instability and the detection of stability boundaries was examined. Balance control was investigated under different visual conditions (eyes open/closed) and postural orientations (forward/backward lean) while standing on a force platform. Dependent variables included center of pressure variability and the time-to-contact of the center of pressure with the stability boundaries around the feet (i.e., time-to-boundary). While leaning maximally, older individuals (ages 55-69) showed increased center of pressure variability compared to no lean, while younger subjects (ages 24-38) showed a decrease. These significant differences were found only in anterior-posterior direction. No significant age-specific differences were found between eyes open and eyes closed conditions. Time-to-boundary analysis revealed reduced spatio-temporal stability margins in older individuals in both anterior-posterior and medio-lateral directions. Time-to-boundary variability, however, was not significantly different between the groups in both medio-lateral and anterior-posterior direction. These results show the importance of boundary relevant center of pressure measures in the study of postural control, especially concerning the lateral instability often observed in older adults. 相似文献

Some of the considerations that led to a consolidation interpretation of retrograde amnesia (RA), which states that RA results from the disruption of memory processing and storage when neural activity is interrupted by a brain insult, are reviewed here. The time-dependent gradient of memory loss (i.e., new memories are more vulnerable to amnesia than old memories) that characterizes RA seemed to fit nicely with the notion of a cascade of cellular events occurring during the immediate post-acquisition period that would transform a labile representation into a more stable form (i.e., consolidate the memory). However, a variety of observations came to challenge the storage-disruption model, and among these was the finding of amnesia for old but reactivated memories. A recent study by Nader, Schafe, and LeDoux (2000) provides an important analytic extension of the work on "reconsolidation" by showing that inhibition of protein synthesis in the lateral and basal nuclei of the amygdala immediately following the reactivation of old memory will induce retrograde amnesia. We offer a retrieval-oriented conceptualization to account for the temporal gradient and the "reconsolidation" phenomena. 相似文献

The present experiment examined the effects of pretraining and reminder treatments on the retention of a nonrelational odor-guided digging task following lesions to the hippocampal formation (i.e., fornix) or parahippocampal region (i.e., perirhinal and entorhinal cortices). The results showed that fornix-lesioned rats and control rats had good retention of the task and did not differ from each other; however, perirhinal- and entorhinal-lesioned rats were severely impaired and differed from fornix and control rats. The present experiment found no attenuation of amnesia following pretraining, which may be due to the lesion technique employed and the size of the resulting lesions. However, the experiment found a significant difference in performance following a reminder treatment, even in the severely impaired perirhinal- and entorhinal-lesioned group. 相似文献
