In September 1981, a symposium of distinguished mental health practitioners from various clinical, administrative, research, and legal disciplines was conducted on the topic of “Behavioral Science and the Secret Service,” under the sponsorship of the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine. The article combines a study of the symposium's written conference summary, the author's experience as legal counsel to a state security hospital, and research into federal cases that have interpreted the so-called “Presidential Threat Statute” (18 USC 871) in order to discuss the role of the Secret Service in protecting elected federal officials from physical harm. The potential for increasing practical cooperation between the Service and state mental health systems is also discussed. 相似文献

To explore the motivational potential of job design, we linked job demands and job resources, as defined in the job demands–resources model, to the motivational process defined in self‐determination theory. Specifically, we introduced basic need satisfaction and autonomous motivation as consecutive process variables mediating the relationship between job design and work effort. We tested this model by means of structural equation modeling in a sample of 689 employees. The comparison of several competing models provided support for the hypothesized model. We conclude that job demands thwart and job resources promote the fulfillment of 3 psychological needs. High levels of need satisfaction, in turn, are associated with autonomous motivation and, therefore, with high levels of effort. 相似文献

In late 1963, the Argentine Foreign Ministry expressed its concern to Israeli diplomats about several matters “that might disturb relations between the two countries.” Specifically, it referred to “military training” that Jewish youth were receiving in camps in the province of Buenos Aires under the supervision of Israeli instructors. The Argentine authorities' concern was caused by the formation of Jewish self-defence groups in the Argentine capital determined to confront the provocations of anti-Semitic, nationalist right-wing bullies. Based on both diplomatic documents and a series of interviews with former members of Jewish self-defence groups, this article analyses the establishment, structure, recruitment methods, training and activities of these organizations. Our main argument is that the concern of Argentine authorities was exaggerated, as well as were the fears of Jewish-Argentines of a possible pogrom, following the kidnapping of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in Argentina. 相似文献

A panel at the 2016 American Academy of Religion conference staged, taped, transcribed, and edited this conversation about the challenges and opportunities of teaching in a “nano department” – an undergraduate religion or religious studies department (or combined religion and philosophy department) with only one, two, or three faculty members. Two things quickly become evident: one is the impossibility of coverage of the full religious studies curriculum, and the other is the necessity for collaboration with other departments. Neither of these is unique to nano departments, but there exists an intimacy between students and faculty in small departments, a necessary freedom to rethink the place of the study of religion in the liberal arts curriculum, and a disruptive value in what can be critiqued and contributed from a marginalized position. Arguably, nano departments are the canaries in the academic coal mine, charting the future of the humanities that cannot be discerned from the vantage point of Research‐1 contexts. 相似文献

Many pastors feel that their work in the secular sphere can best be described as an exploration of the meaning of life: as
spiritual care. However, the idea that it is possible and easy to find such a thing as “the meaning of life,” as well as the
concurrent idea that this meaning will help to make life more agreeable, should not be taken for granted but, rather, should
be considered to be open for further exploration. To get a better understanding of the difference between spiritual care and
the care of souls, I will discuss three central themes in any pastoral practice: sin, sense, and sorrow, together with three
related constructs: soul, self, and the sacred. My exposition will result in a plea for revaluing two traditional but ever
relevant modes of religious leadership: the modes of shepherd and teacher, of tutor and theologian, which are performed either
in the context of the church or the secular institutional environment. 相似文献

Using the socialization and attraction-selection-attrition (ASA) frameworks, this study examined the relation between employees’ work values and their organization’s values (person-organization fit). With a two year time interval, 140 respondents participated in a longitudinal study. After entry, socialization served to enhance homogeneity. The work values underwent small changes and the perception of fit with the organization grew. Despite high retention rates results confirmed the attrition effect. Results indicated that the lower the perceived match between own and organizational values at entry, the more likely it was that someone left the organization over time. We concluded that socialization as well as attrition mechanisms were present at the same time. 相似文献
