As the complexity of the challenges presented by our interactions with our planet continues to grow, we must develop new modes
of knowledge production. In these modes, distinctions between multidisciplinary and inter-disciplinary activities and processes
have renewed importance. There are at least two distinct types of interdisciplinary activities distinguished by the disciplinary
breadth they attempt to bridge. In the narrow case, reductionist processes reveal a common underlying principle or process
which can serve as a Rosetta stone. In the broad case, no such common arbiter exists. Investigators must develop integrating
vocabulary in the context of the full breadth of their work.
His primary activities are the fostering of university-wide interdisciplinary research and curriculum programs focused on

Tobacco, alcohol, and drug use are problems for American-Indian people. We reviewed these problems and the explanations for them and described a bicultural competence skills approach for preventing substance abuse with American-Indian adolescents. Data from a study of that approach suggest its efficacy with American-Indian youth. At posttest and a 6-month follow-up, American-Indian subjects who received preventive intervention based on bicultural competence skills concepts improved more than did American-Indian subjects in a no-intervention control condition on measures of substance-use knowledge, attitudes, and interactive skills, and on self-reported rates of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. Our findings have implications for future substance-abuse prevention research with American-Indian people. 相似文献

Teaching students with disabilities to respond appropriately to potentially dangerous situations is a useful skill that has received little research attention. This investigation taught 3 students with moderate mental retardation to remove and discard broken materials (plates, glasses) safely from (a) a sink containing dishwater, (b) a countertop, and (c) a floor. A 4th student was instructed on the sink task only. A multicomponent treatment package was used to teach the skills. Simulated materials were used initially and were replaced with broken plates and glasses. A multiple probe design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment package. The results indicated that the treatment package was effective in teaching the skills. Data were collected 1 week and 1 month following the completion of training, and indicated mixed results. No student was injured during any phase of training. Issues pertinent to teaching safety skills to students with moderate disabilities are discussed. 相似文献

The study is based on an on-line investigation of spoken language comprehension processes in 25 French-speaking aphasics using a syllable-monitoring task. Nonsense syllables were presented in three different conditions: context-free (embedded in strings of nonsense syllables), lexical context (where the target nonsense syllable is the initial, medial, or final syllable of real three-syllable words), and sentence context. This study builds on an earlier one that explored the relationship between the acoustic-phonetic, lexical, and sentential levels of spoken language processing in French-speaking normals and gave evidence of top-down lexical and sentential influence on syllable recognition. In the present study, aphasic patients from various diagnostic categories were classified as high (N = 13) or low (N = 12) comprehenders. The results show that low comprehending aphasics make no use of sentence information in the syllable-recognition task. As for top-down effect at the single word level that is observed in normal listeners. However, a subgroup analysis shows that the Broca's are the only high comprehending aphasics who perform in the same way as normal listeners; this sets them apart from the anomics and conduction aphasics. 相似文献

A stimulus leads to a cortical response (i.e., evoked potential [EP]) which may be recorded from electrodes attached to the scalp. However, background cortical activity, considered as noise (n), is typically of equal or greater magnitude than the response, which is considered as signal (s). This situation leads to the masking of the presence of the electrocortical signal. Two methods are described which enable the enhancement of the signal with respect to the noise. The first method outlined is time-domain averaging. Its relation to Fourier averaging is also presented. Time averaging can lead to an enhancement of the signal with respect to the noise, known as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), by a factor of root N; N being the number of trials recorded. However, latency variability (i.e., jitter) present in the signal leads to a decrement in this maximal potential enhancement. The second technique is an adaptive filter method of averaged cross-correlations, developed by Woody (1967), which deals with the variable latency problem. The development of a latency corrected average developed by McGillem and Aunon (1977) is also presented. The final section describes methods for data handling once the electrocortical signal has been enhanced. It is then necessary to describe the EP quantitatively. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) allows for the quantitative compact representation of the evoked potential waveform. In a conditioned inhibition paradigm (A+, B+, AX?_, pigeons received either of two keylight stimuli reliably followed by food (A+, B+). However, when one of these keylights was accompanied by another stimulus, food did not follow (AX?). For some groups, the putative inhibitor was a tone, whereas for others it was illumination of a red houselight. The birds pecked the A and B stimuli at a high rate. When X was red houselight, the birds pecked A at a much lower rate in the presence of X. When X was a tone, discrimination between A and AX was much poorer. Moreover, in a transfer test, red houselight inhibited responding to the other keylight, B, but tone did not. These results indicate that red houselight becomes a conditioned inhibitor more quickly than tone in appetitive situations, just as red houselight becomes a conditioned excitor more quickly in those situations. These results contradict the assertion that the latter outcome occurs because red houselight is a stronger appetitive excitor than tone at the start of the experiment (the “head start” hypothesis). 相似文献

Although meditation is increasingly being employed as an adjunct in psychotherapy, there has been practically no comprehensive evaluation of its usefulness in this respect. This paper seeks to address this issue through conceptual models of the meditation experience. It is concluded that meditation practice may be associated with the acquisition of some useful skills (e.g., focused attention), that practice may be physiologically relaxing, that meditation may decrease anxiety, insomnia and drug usage, while enhancing hypnotic induction and self-actualization. There is still no compelling evidence, however, that meditation practice is associated with unique state effects compared with other relaxational procedures. Those who appear to benefit most from meditation appear to be those who present with milder disorders. The clinical value of meditation, therefore, appears to be limited. Furthermore, the long-term objectives of meditation are not in general congruent with those of mainstream psychotherapy, as they go beyond therapeutic gain in the clinical sense. 相似文献
