Regret and relief are complex emotional states associated with the counterfactual processing of nonobtained outcomes in a
decision-making situation. In the “actor effect,” a sense of agency and personal responsibility is thought to heighten these
emotions. Using fMRI, we scanned volunteers (n = 22) as they played a task involving choices between two wheel-of-fortune gambles. We examined how neural responses to counterfactual
outcomes were modulated by giving subjects the opportunity to change their minds, as a manipulation of personal responsibility.
Satisfaction ratings to the outcomes were highly sensitive to the difference between the obtained and nonobtained outcome,
and ratings following losses were lower on trials with the opportunity to change one’s mind. Outcome-related activity in the
striatum and orbitofrontal cortex was positively related to the satisfaction ratings. The striatal response was modulated
by the agency manipulation: Following losses, the striatal signal was significantly lower when the subject had the opportunity
to change his/her mind. These results support the involvement of frontostriatal mechanisms in counterfactual thinking and
highlight the sensitivity of the striatum to the effects of personal responsibility. 相似文献

Recent developments of three-dimensional printing of biomaterials (3D bioprinting) in medicine have been portrayed as demonstrating the potential to transform some medical treatments, including providing new responses to organ damage or organ failure. However, beyond the hype and before 3D bioprinted organs are ready to be transplanted into humans, several important ethical concerns and regulatory questions need to be addressed. This article starts by raising general ethical concerns associated with the use of bioprinting in medicine, then it focuses on more particular ethical issues related to experimental testing on humans, and the lack of current international regulatory directives to guide these experiments. Accordingly, this article (1) considers whether there is a limit as to what should be bioprinted in medicine; (2) examines key risks of significant harm associated with testing 3D bioprinting for humans; (3) investigates the clinical trial paradigm used to test 3D bioprinting; (4) analyses ethical questions of irreversibility, loss of treatment opportunity and replicability; (5) explores the current lack of a specific framework for the regulation and testing of 3D bioprinting treatments. 相似文献

The bow effect is ubiquitous in standard absolute identification experiments; stimuli at the center of the stimulus-set range elicit slower and less accurate responses than do others. This effect has motivated various theoretical accounts of performance, often involving the idea that end-of-range stimuli have privileged roles. Two other phenomena (practice effects and improved performance for frequently-presented stimuli) have an important but less explored consequence for the bow effect: Standard within-subjects manipulations of set size could disrupt the bow effect. We found this disruption for stimulus types that support practice effects (line length and tone frequency), suggesting that the bow effect is more fragile than has been thought. Our results also have implications for theoretical accounts of absolute identification, which currently do not include mechanisms for practice effects, and provide results consistent with those in the literature on stimulus-specific learning. 相似文献

This paper explores Newbigin's trinitarian missiology by first evaluating its theological basis, and then looking at the practical implications for the church's mission within Western culture today. Newbigin claimed that “the doctrine of the Trinity … is the necessary starting point of preaching”. This statement actually involves two mutually related claims that are discussed using the resources of recent trinitarian theology. First, evangelism begins with describing the triune God, and second, the triune nature of God is irreducibly bound up with the substance of the gospel. This discussion evaluates these bold claims using the resources of trinitarian theology, taking the claims in reverse order because the second impinges upon the first. The second part of this paper applies the fruits of this discussion to the church's mission within Western culture. It briefly articulates a relational ontology based on the doctrine of the Trinity, and then describes a relational anthropology based on the imago Dei. Next it explores Newbigin's theology of the inter‐relatedness of all life as the clue to understanding missional election. The practical implications this has for ecclesiology and missiology vis‐à‐vis Newbigin's understanding of the congregation as the hermeneutic of the gospel conclude this exploration. They demonstrate the abiding significance of Lesslie Newbigin for continued theological, missiological, and practical reflection. 相似文献

In their article published in Nanoethics, “Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects of Brain-Implants Using Nano-Scale Materials and Techniques”, Berger et al. suggest that there may be a prima facie moral obligation to improve neuro implants with nanotechnology given their possible therapeutic advantages for patients [Nanoethics, 2:241–249]. Although we agree with Berger et al. that developments in nanomedicine hold the potential to render brain implant technologies less invasive and to better target neural stimulation to respond to brain impairments in the near future, we argue against presenting the development of nanobionic clinical devices in terms of a moral obligation to conduct this research. In the first part of the paper, we consider what a duty to pursue new technologies might mean, and in the second we explore some of the negative consequences of defending such development as a moral obligation based on potential benefit. We argue that promoting the advances available to brain implants through developments in nanotechnology and bionics could contribute to medical rhetoric that indirectly increases the risk of exposing patients to harm when participating in clinical trials. We argue that rather than there being a moral obligation to improve nanobionics implants because of their potential benefit, the pursuit of improved neuro implants must be balanced against the prima facie obligations to protect patients against harm and to promote and protect patient autonomy. 相似文献

Measuring the Happiness of Large-Scale Written Expression: Songs,Blogs, and Presidents 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The importance of quantifying the nature and intensity of emotional states at the level of populations is evident: we would
like to know how, when, and why individuals feel as they do if we wish, for example, to better construct public policy, build
more successful organizations, and, from a scientific perspective, more fully understand economic and social phenomena. Here,
by incorporating direct human assessment of words, we quantify happiness levels on a continuous scale for a diverse set of
large-scale texts: song titles and lyrics, weblogs, and State of the Union addresses. Our method is transparent, improvable,
capable of rapidly processing Web-scale texts, and moves beyond approaches based on coarse categorization. Among a number
of observations, we find that the happiness of song lyrics trends downward from the 1960s to the mid 1990s while remaining
stable within genres, and that the happiness of blogs has steadily increased from 2005 to 2009, exhibiting a striking rise
and fall with blogger age and distance from the Earth’s equator. 相似文献

In this paper, we take forward Schwarz’s (2009) disjunction between measurement-apparatus-questionnaire and measurement-apparatus-man to examine how the crisis in contemporary
psychology is related to assumptions about two sets of connections in research: connections between research tools, research
behaviours, and psychological phenomena; and connections between researchers and researchees. By setting up a research problem
with methodological and ethical implications, we describe three approaches that involve different assumptions and research
activities in relation to the ways each makes these connections: Disassociated, Conventionally Connected and Persons in Dialogue
Approaches. We argue that a Persons in Dialogue Approach is the most appropriate approach for a 21st Century psychology in
crisis. 相似文献

This study outlines the development of a scale designed to measure supervisory issues unique to international students. A factor analysis yielded a 1‐factor scale that showed good internal consistency and was correlated with supervisees' acculturation level, satisfaction with supervision, and supervisors' sensitivity to diversity issues. Implications for supervision are addressed.
