Problems relating to the role of academic staff in the pastoral care of students in institutions of higher education are discussed, and the arrangements made in one university for the provision of such pastoral care are considered. The operation of this 'supervisory system' is shown to vary between the different departments, and the views of the heads of departments are seen to be far from unanimous. The responsibilities attributed by heads of departments to supervisors are numerous and diverse. Perhaps, with the influx of professional student counsellors into institutions of higher education, the time is ripe for a re-assessment of the part academic staff can play in the pastoral care of their students.  相似文献

The duties of PhD supervisor involve combining the dimensions of intellectual critic and guide to doctoral students, whilst at the same time offering the latter pastoral care, tasks which occur under conditions of increasing difficulty. The combination of these duties is depicted, and the pastoral dimension of supervision is portrayed as harbouring the potential, unless skilfully handled, for supervisors to become too emotionally involved with their students. The costs of this over-involvement are subsequently identified and a solution is proposed, namely that training programmes for PhD supervisors should contain a pastoral skills component.  相似文献

Issues pertaining to women and clinical pastoral supervision are identified and examined in this essay. An in-depth literature review regarding the relationship between gender and supervised pastoral training provides the basis for the identification of the following themes: the relative lack of female supervisors; how and why we ought to talk about gender and ministry supervision; the contextual relevance of systemic marginalization to ministry supervision; the relationship between pastoral care and the "feminine"; the relevance of a panentheistic God to gender and ministry supervision; and, lastly, the relevance of gender to the supervisory relationship. Although the focus is on the ways in which gender dynamics can affect the female supervisee's experience, the author also takes a brief look at how female supervisors might experience the relevance of their gender to the art of supervision.  相似文献

Though concerns about personal integrity have led some to de-emphasize the role of assessment and the pastor's professional viewpoint in pastoral care, as re-examined here these same concerns call for a recognition of the vital connection between professional and personal integrity. The relationship between personal and professional integrity as they shape pastoral assessment is analyzed in terms of respect, encounter, and anticipation. This article argues for convergence of pastoral training models as a consequence of the pluralistic nature of contemporary life. It proposes a more active partnership between pastoral disciplines in an attempt to bring wholeness to pastoral service and to pastoral education in a multicultural context. Pastoral counseling, pastoral care and pastoral ministry are presented as mutually complementary and as under girded by the same pastoral theological principle of genuine encounter. Since pastoral theology is informed by personal experience, the author illustrates his points by reference to personal cross-cultural experience. Training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy stimulates both trainee regression and development-enhancing intemalization of supervisors. The internalization processes of introjection, identification and ego-integration influence both trainees' personal development and development of a professional role. Since both supervisors and the personal therapist are introjected and identified with, the possibility of trainee-perceived conflict arises. Where the identifications seem incompatible, trainees will tend to reject the supervision if it is overly dogmatic. If their personal therapy is conflictual, trainees will apply ego-ideal and superego structures to their personal therapy experience and reject their personal therapist. The reasons for this choice suggest the possible value of supervisor-personal therapist collaboration and a supervisory stance of identification with the learning process itself.  相似文献

Interviews with pastoral practitioners revealed that exploration of feelings, both personal and interpersonal, is considered the sine qua non of pastoral care and counseling. This emphasis on personal and interpersonal feelings is largely attributable to the enduring influence of Carl Rogers on contemporary pastoral care and counseling. While recognizing that Rogers was not as narrowly focused on personal and interpersonal relationships and oblivious to the larger social order than is generally assumed, I contend that he did not give sufficient attention to the fact that emotions are socially constructed and draw on recent literature on the social construction of emotions and on critical race theory to argue for a new direction in the pastoral work of healing, one that takes more adequate account of the sociocultural factors that create and sustain unhealthy emotions and that recognizes that emotions are signals about the social order.  相似文献

The introduction of clinical pastoral education as a prerequisite to many forms of ministry and the initiation of D. Min. programs in theological schools call for a reappraisal of the process and substance of pastoral supervision. Effective models of supervision for D. Min. programs have not yet been identified, yet a CPE model is inherent in the requirements for the degree. The meaning, goals, content, and styles of supervision are discussed. The author explores the notion of friendship by drawing on personal and ministry experience, as well as on philosophical and biblical insights, in order to suggest a dynamic practice of pastoral care and a process of ministry formation which transcends the professional paradigm and the peership principle. This article is an explicit challenge to church leaders and ministers of all denominations to take seriously the necessity of obligatory supervision for ordained ministers. To support this challenge, the author describes fundamental principles of pastoral care that found the moral demand for and benefits of the supervision of pastoral practice. This paper explores the possibility of a closer working relationship between psychologists of religion and professionals in pastoral care. The first part identifies the major conceptual problems of pastoral psychology and pastoral theology. The second part indicates how psychology of religion provides pastoral psychology and pastoral theology with resources for solving these problems. Empathy is a key factor in successful pastoral contact. This article reports on an investigation among pastors of the relationship between empathy and narcissism, a personality trait which has acquired considerable importance in recent years. The article distinguishes between several dimensions of empathy and narcissism. In the case of empathy these dimensions are perspective-taking, fantasy, empathic concern, and personal distress, and in the case of narcissism they are centripetal narcissism, centrifugal narcissism, isolation, and self-satisfaction. The meaning of the relationship between empathy and narcissism for pastoral performance is discussed.  相似文献

Conclusion These case notes with comment in no sense give a complete picture of the pastoral relationships that have been reproduced for observation. They are rather case demonstrations of certain dimensions in pastoral work which, if understood by the pastor, could enrich and enliven his ministry. I have also tried to show the connection between the pastoral and religious features of these cases on the one hand and, on the other, the mental health aspects which, in my judgment, are to be seen as by-products of genuine pastoral encounters. In all of this, it may not be too inaccurate to remark that the work of ministry in our day requires greater skill, freer imagination, and stronger personal integrity than have ever been demanded before.  相似文献

Against the historical background of institutionalised pastoral care in schools, the results are reported of a questionnaire survey of 159 members of the National Association for Pastoral Care in Education (NAPCE) with regard to the impact of post-1988 changes on pastoral care and personal and social education (PSE). Five hypotheses are generated concerning the likely effects of the 1988 Education Reform Act, the National Curriculum and associated developments in educational policy and management. The data reveal that, for the sample surveyed, the importance, time and resources given to pastoral care and PSE are considered not to have declined in the way predicted. Respondents were also more positive than expected about the impact of a range of related changes, including school-centred initial teacher training, teacher mentoring, the introduction of statutory training days, National Curriculum cross-curricular elements, and SCAA and OFSTED guidance. However, there were some developments which were considered to have had a negative effect. These included the National Curriculum programmes of study and key-stage assessments, published league tables and collective acts of worship. Respondents were divided as to the impact of other developments, including the advent of local financial management (LMS), grant-maintained status and OFSTED inspections. There was little visible effect on the role structures in schools, with traditional 'horizontal' arrangements of years and schools-within-schools predominating. In sum, the picture as regards the impact on pastoral care and PSE of a decade of educational policy change is more optimistic than might have been supposed.  相似文献

The practice of pastoral counseling provides many opportunities for dual relationships. Churches and church-related institutions are contexts in which such relationships are easily formed. Some pastoral counselors cope by entering private practice, which may exacerbate the problem by removing resources for collegiality and accountability. Pastoral counselors can avoid dual relationships by understanding their vulnerability, subscribing to and communicating a clear code of professional ethics, becoming aware of personal limitations, and building networks of accountability.  相似文献

Process analysis research methodology was used to examine the interactions between 41 nonprofessional child-aides and 166 primary graders with school maladaptation in 11 urban and suburban schools. Sixty-five percent of the interaction time was spent in play activities, 15% each in conversation and tutoring. Urban schools had more tutoring, while suburban schools emphasized socialization and relation building. Learning disability children had more tutoring time and acting out children more problem conversation. Aides' personal and attitudinal attributes related to process measures. The findings indicate the feasibility and usefulness of process analysis for studying the helping interventions of nonprofessional workers.  相似文献

Among adult employees, interpersonal injustice and abusive supervision predict aggression toward supervisors at work. The aim of this study was to assess whether similar relationships exist among teenage employees and, further, whether teenagers' reasons for working moderate these relationships. Multiple regression analyses on data from 119 teenage employees showed that financial and personal fulfillment reasons for working moderate the impact of interpersonal injustice and abusive supervision on aggression directed at workplace supervisors. These findings contribute to the understanding of workplace aggression by demonstrating that (a) teenagers engage in this workplace behavior, (b) the predictors are similar to those of adult aggression, and (c) reasons for working play a moderating role among this particular cohort. The possible long-term consequences of teenagers' use of aggression at work are discussed.  相似文献

This essay explores the dynamics underlying the search for a Messiah in psychotherapy. It argues that the disenchantment with one's Messiah emerges primarily from the confrontation with multiple messiahs, and hence, the personal crisis of relativism. The nature of this personal crisis is investigated through the developmental scheme of William Perry. Because organizational support for ethical conduct is valued highly in personal selling and sales management, ethics training, functioning through a company’s ethical values and culture, should prompt greater satisfaction with supervisors and coworkers because these individuals play a part in the ethical practices that impact job satisfaction in others. Using a national sample of 324 sales and marketing professionals representing a variety of organizations, this study examined the mediating role of perceived ethical context in the proposed relationships between hours of ethics training and satisfaction with supervisors and coworkers. The results indicated that the focal variables were indeed related, with either full or partial mediation identified, using two separate measures of perceived ethical context. Organizational leaders in the sales and marketing professions should consider using ethics training to institutionalize an ethical environment in sales organizations, as well as involving sales managers and other professionals in this institutionalization process. Such efforts could yield greater employee satisfaction for supervisors and coworkers.  相似文献
