Role of the book in the care for hospitalized gerontopsychiatric patients

In order to be able to realize the cultural care of patients with therapeutic aim the choice of literature and the behaviour of reading of gerontopsychiatric patients were systematicly examined within a two years' programme. In the reading they looked for distraction from the burdening reality, relaxation, but also for the possibility to fill up gaps in the experience by identification. The literature that particularly serves the widening of knowledge found less attention. The reading, which was carried out as a kind of group therapy, proved to be a suitable method to counteract the lack of interest and mental slowness of many gerontopsychiatric patients and through that to make them more capable of the living together in the sense of the therapeutic community.     

Long-term course of psychoses in continuously hospitalized patients

Thorough reexamination of 70 patients in a long-term psychiatric ward led to partial revision of the diagnoses. Classified on the basis of Leohards's differential diagnostics, the large proportion of schizophrenics has dropped by over a third from 78% to 47%. Half of the 22 psychosis originally considered to be schizophrenia proved to be curable phasic and cycloid psychoses which had previously been overlooked and the other half were mental disturbances caused by brain-organic damage. A third of the chronic mental illnesses were found to be rooted in somatic brain lesions.     

The incidence of out-of-body experiences in hospitalized patients

The author studied out-of-body experiences (OBEs), cultural differences in reporting those OBEs, and associations between OBEs and frequency of dream recall in 100 white and 100 black adults hospitalized in a university medical center. Of the 200 subjects interviewed, 31 reported having had an OBE, six during the current hospitalization. White patients reported OBEs significantly more often than did black patients, possibly because of methodological problems in the interview techniques. Chi-squared tests showed significant positive associations between frequency of dream recall and incidence of OBEs, and between vivid dreams and incidence of OBEs.     

Student mental health: the case studies

University life can precipitate a chain of unfortunate reactions. Stressors and the effects which stress can have on an individual could vary considerably. There are a number of theories of stress. The case studies were an attempt to study in detail the specific stressors and problems suffered by 16 students from the Professions Allied to Medicine. They were part of a larger sample of 45 and previous to that an original sample of 210. Students were tested and retested after an 18-month period using a number of measures. The results showed no definitive pattern but resulted in a volume of information from which conclusions may be drawn. On the whole, coping resources were poor. There was a high level of physiological and psychological symptoms to the point of ‘caseness’ in the GHQ30. There was no association between stress levels and coping nor personalities and emotional indications. Entrance qualifications and final examination results were closely related. What enabled those students with abnormally high clinically indicated psychiatric profiles to complete the course with such outstanding academic results? Answers may lie in theories of activation, motivation, arousal and inhibition illustrated in a model of student mental health.     

Suicidal tendencies in schizophrenic patients hospitalized for the first time

180 (15%) patients from 1208 first-hospitalized schizophrenic patients had suicidal tendencies. Our findings show that the suicidal tendencies of schizophrenic patients have their own features. These conclusions can be supported by the differences between the determinants of the suicidal tendencies of schizophrenic and non-schizophrenic population; such different determinants are: sex, age, family and suicidal method. Suicidal tendencies are more frequent among patients without formal thought disturbances. We explain this fact with an "incoherence of decision processes". The features of the suicidal tendencies of schizophrenic patients are based on the grounds of psychosis own dynamic.
