This article reviews policy issues involved in maternity leave or parental leave. Findings from the Wisconsin Maternity Leave and Health Project, a longitudinal interview study of 570 women and 550 of their husbands/partners, are discussed, focusing especially on the issues of maternity leave and women's mental health, and fathers' patterns of taking parental leave. I stress the importance of empirical research if feminist psychologists are to have an impact on public policy.  相似文献

Individual patient records from the National Hospital Discharge Survey for 1988 and 1998 comprising approximately 10 million cases were the basis for a binary logistic regression model to predict coronary artery bypass graft. Patterns in 1988 and in 1998 indicated a dramatic and pernicious gender discrepancy in medical decisions involving bypass surgery. Overall, men were twice as likely to have bypass as were women with comparable medical profiles. This result was particularly evident for women in their 40s and 50s, when angina was a primary diagnosis, and in the presence of any comorbid condition (e.g., diabetes or hypertension). Failure to pursue proactive case management of women with heart disease costs women's lives.  相似文献

Suggests various ways in which the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) can inform community research and action. Begins by defining EI and reviewing the growing body of research on its contribution to educational, health, and occupational outcomes. Next distinguishes between EI and the related concept of emotional and social competence. Then considers the connection between EI and several topics of interest to community action researchers including prevention and wellness promotion, implementation and dissemination of innovative programs, community development, and the value of diversity. Literature on gender, higher education administration, and leadership is reviewed using the framework of five principles derived from feminist psychology ( Worell & Johnson, 1997 ): (a) sociocultural context influences leadership situations, (b) power dynamics impact sociocultural structures, (c) people are active agents of coping and environmental change, (d) multiple perspectives are useful, and (e) collaboration is an important technique for changing organizations. Within this framework are discussions of the effects of historical context, gender discrimination and stereotyping, hierarchical organization, masculinized context, the interconnection between gender and status, and leadership as empowerment. Examples of administrative strategies that may promote feminist leadership behavior by college administrators are given, such as understanding behavior in context, promoting structural change, using active survival strategies, changing behavioral incentives, striving for activism and social justice, fostering interdisciplinary perspectives, and encouraging collaboration. Difficulties encountered by women attempting to change the higher education context and assume feminist leadership styles are discussed.  相似文献

Community psychology as a field may have lost some of its original spirit; a spirit dominant at the founding of the field. Spirit is a difficult concept to discuss since it is a concept beyond usual discourse in psychology as a denotative, measurable and verifiable concept. Taking the lead from William James, Spirit, however elusive, is most essential to a sense of self. I offer three suggestions to enhance and to make our individual and collective spirit more vital: (1) Continuing education in the history of community psychology; (2) Creating time to share stories about our work; (3) Creating safe settings to enlarge our spirit. These ideas are offered as pragmatic suggestions to enable us to create more coherence between our personal and professional selves.  相似文献

I introduce Spirita , a womanist and mujerista spirituality. Spirita redefines spirituality as protest, resistance, and r/evolution. In contrast to feminist mainstream spirituality, Spirita places the interaction of race and gender at the center of women's lives. A way of knowing and being, Spirita endorses a universal perspective. Consequently, it promotes collective healing, international solidarity, and global social justice. Finally, I present how Spirita can enrich mainstream feminism by moving the subjective experiences of women of color from the margins to the center of feminist thought.  相似文献
