In this paper evidence is presented that the variability of the motor system does not play an important role in the variability of simple reaction time. Many studies refer to this fact which, however, seems contradictory to electrophysiological data. A model is proposed for the operation of the motor system in simple reaction time experiments which consistently links single cell neuronal activity with electromyographic activity and with response time. It appears that the motor system subserving simple reactions consists of many elements which once triggered produce a mechanical response well defined in time despite the fact that the elements themselves show a rather large time jitter.  相似文献

Psychophysiological measures were used to compare the response preparation and response execution processes of modified versions of F. C. Donders's (1868/1969) classic simple, go/no-go, and choice reaction time tasks. On all measures, differences between tasks were minimal prior to test stimulus onset, supporting the idea of equivalent motor preparation for the 3 tasks. In addition, the psychophysiological measures indicated that the time from the onset of motor processing to the keypress response was also approximately constant across tasks. These results support the assumption that the mean duration of motor processes can be invariant across simple, go/no-go, and choice tasks, at least for the present modified versions of these tasks. The findings emphasize the utility of psychophysiological measures for both examining preparatory processes preceding stimulus onset and for localizing effects on reaction time.  相似文献

Two experiments are reported in which high-compatibility reaction time (RT) tasks were performed with, and without, a concurrent secondary task. In both experiments, the secondary task interfered to a greater extent with simple RT than with choice RT. In fact, the effect of adding a secondary task was to eliminate the advantage of simple RT over two-alternative-choice RT. Previous studies of this phenomenon employed a task in which subjects raised a finger when it received tactile stimulation, while engaging in continuous reading aloud. The present experiments show that the effect can be obtained using a different stimulus modality (vision) as well as other responses (vocal) and secondary tasks (shadowing, auditory step-tracking). The paradigm provides a means of isolating preparatory processes that are peculiar to the simple RT task.  相似文献

Twenty subjects, half having high extraversion and the other half having low extraversion scores on the Eysenck Personality Inventory, performed a simple reaction time task in which the warning stimulus was a light and the imperative stimulus was a tone. Beat-by-beat analysis showed significantly different response patterns between the two groups in time of onset, magnitude, and duration of the cardiac responses. The extraversion measures were found to relate to central-nervous-system-strength types and to indicate relative strength of central inhibitory processes, as reflected by cardiac activity.  相似文献

This article reports four experiments on the ability to inhibit responses in simple and choice reaction time (RT) tasks. Subjects responding to visually presented letters were occasionally presented with a stop signal (a tone) that told them not to respond on that trial. The major dependent variables were (a) the probability of inhibiting a response when the signal occurred, (b) mean and standard deviation (SD) of RT on no-signal trials, (c) mean RT on trials on which the signal occurred but subjects failed to inhibit, and (d) estimated RT to the stop signal. A model was proposed to estimated RT to the stop signal and to account for the relations among the variables. Its main assumption is that the RT process and the stopping process race, and response inhibition depends on which process finishes first. The model allows us to account for differences in response inhibition between tasks in terms of transformations of stop-signal delay that represent the relative finishing times of the RT process and the stopping process. The transformations specified by the model were successful in group data and in data from individual subjects, regardless of how delays were selected. The experiments also compared different methods of selecting stop-signal delays to equate the probability of inhibition in the two tasks.  相似文献

The relationship during a simple reaction time task between heart rate and four measures of task irrelevant somatic activity was evaluated in four age groups of children, i.e., 4-, 5-, 8-, and 10-year-olds and young adults, in order to evaluate further a hypothesized coupling of cardiac and somatic activity. At all age levels, phasic decreases in both heart rate and somatic activity coincident with performance were found with the magnitude of the effect increasing with age only on three somatic measures. However, tonic levels of both heart rate and somatic activity decreased with age. Performance on the reaction task was found to be inversely related to the age-related phasic somatic effects as well as age-related tonic heart rate and somatic activity.  相似文献

A double response paradigm is utilized to study stimulus intensity effects upon the motor system in simple visual and auditory reaction times (RT). Subjects had to respond with both hands simultaneously upon detection of a stimulus. The RT difference of both hands is thereby of special interest, because it is considered that this variable does not contain any sensory latency and therefore allows one to study those processes that follow stimulus detection. It was found that the RT-difference distribution varies with stimulus intensity, which questions the general view that stimulus intensity affects only very early sensory stages in the processing chain. In particular, it was found that the variance of RT difference diminished with increasing stimulus intensity. This finding supports the notion of speeding up the motor process by increasing stimulus intensity. A generalization of a stochastic model by Meijers and Eijkman (1974) and Meijers, Teulings, and Eijkman (1976) is advanced to account for the findings. The central assumption is that more units (e.g., motoneurons) are activated if stimulus intensity is increased. The model’s qualitative predictions are confirmed.  相似文献

Kornblum's time estimation paradigm, together with the so‐called ‘race model’, provides an appealing alternative for measuring the ‘cut‐off’ which separates ‘true’ reaction times from anticipatory reaction times. However, the model is not precise enough to reveal the relation between the signal intensity and the ‘cut‐off’. Accordingly, Kornblum's model is extended with an emphasis on the measure of the ‘cut‐off’. Another aspect of the extension is to use a parametric method to analyse the data. In particular, it is assumed that the time estimation‐induced latency is gamma distributed and the signal‐induced latency is Weibull distributed, with the latter shifted by the ‘cut‐off’. The rationale behind the parametric assumption is discussed. For illustrative purposes, two pieces of experimental work are presented. Since the core of the race model is the assumption of an independent race between the time estimation process and the detection process, the first experiment tests whether, for the same signal intensity, the signal‐induced latency distribution is invariant across different time intervals; the second experiment tests whether, for the same time interval, the time estimation‐induced latency distribution is invariant across different signal intensity conditions. The data from the second experiment are also used to test various parametric assumptions in the model, which include the signal effect on the ‘cut‐off’. The new model fits the data well.  相似文献

Reaction time tasks are used widely in basic and applied psychology. There is a need for an easy-to-use, freely available programme that can run simple and choice reaction time tasks with no special software. We report the development of, and make available, the Deary-Liewald reaction time task. It is initially tested here on 150 participants, aged from 18 to 80, alongside another widely used reaction time device and tests of fluid and crystallised intelligence and processing speed. The new task’s parameters perform as expected with respect to age and intelligence differences. The new task’s parameters are reliable, and have very high correlations with the existing task. We also provide instructions for downloading and using the new reaction time programme, and we encourage other researchers to use it.  相似文献

It was hypothesized that the time course of preparation during a variable interstimulus interval (ISI) of a simple reaction time (RT) experiment was partly determined by the subjective distribution of conditional probabilities of the executive signal (ES). Sixty subjects performed a simple auditory RT task with various ranges of six ISI durations organized in rectangular frequency distributions. In order to give the subjects information about elapsed time during ISI, a recurring time-marking click, the periodicity of which was varied, was introduced during the ISI in one of the three series of trials each subject performed. A strong decreasing RT--ISI relationship was observed supporting the main hypothesis. However, a clear increase of mean RT over all ISIs combined, was also found. Because these two mixed effects were greatest when the click intervened at the possible times of ES occurrence only, three functions of time-information given by the click are discussed: (a) a reduction of the usual increase of time estimation error with increased ISI; (b) an increase of the subjects knowledge of the ISI range resulting from the discontinuity of the time-marking click which makes easier a discrete time-intervals numbering process; (c) a change of the simple-RT task into a discrimination task.  相似文献

If the discriminal distributions of signal-detectability theory evolve in time according to a normal Markov process, they can be characterized by Brownian motion generalized with a constant bias determined by signal strength. If the process is stopped at the first occurrence of a preset criterion displacement, the resulting latency distribution provides a model for the central component of simple reaction time. Discussed are properties of the distribution which should be useful in obtaining experimental predictions from neural-counting assumptions, and in relating reaction times to basic variables of the theory of signal-detectability.This paper was written while the author was on a post-doctoral fellowship at the Mental Health Research Institute, University of Michigan, supported by U.S.P.H.S. Divergent results have been reported on the effect of a night's sleep loss on performance of a single monotonous task. The present experiment examined the effect that partial sleep deprivation had on 10 participants' performance on a simple reaction time task requiring low responding for 120 min. compared to performance on the same task when well rested. Participants missed significantly more signals and had slower reaction times when sleep deprived. Reaction times increased with time when participants were both sleep deprived and rested, but the number of misses did not significantly change over time. Reaction time was significantly correlated with subjective ratings of sleepiness and heart rate in both conditions. EEG and heart-rate variability measures did not correlate significantly with reaction time. Misses correlated significantly with subjective ratings and heart rate but only in the rested condition.  相似文献

Evidence is still inconclusive regarding the locus of the stimulus intensity effect on information processing in reaction tasks. Miller, Ulrich, and Rinkenauer (1999) addressed this question by assessing the intensity effect on stimulus- and response-locked lateralized readiness potentials (LRPs) as indices of the sensory and motor parts of reaction time (RT). In the case of visual stimuli, they observed that application of brighter stimuli resulted in a shortening of RT and stimulus-locked LRP (S-LRP), but not of response-locked LRP (R-LRP). The results for auditory stimuli, however, were unclear. In spite of a clear RT reduction due to increased loudness, neither S-LRP nor R-LRP onset was affected. A reason for this failure might have been a relatively small range of intensity variation and the type of task. To check for this possibility, we performed three experiments in which broader ranges of stimulus intensities and simple, rather than choice, response tasks were used. Although the intensity effect on the R-LRP was negligible, S-LRP followed RT changes, irrespective of stimulus modality. These findings support the conclusion that stimulus intensity exerts its effect before the start of motoric processes. Finally, S-LRP and R-LRP findings are discussed within a broader information-processing perspective to check the validity of the claim that S-LRP and R-LRP can, indeed, be considered as pure estimates of the duration of sensory and motor processes.  相似文献

Following a more explicit explanation of the 1960 memory-drum theory and the reasons for using the simple (rather than choice) RT method in testing predictions based on it, the eight experiments utilizing large-scale precued arm movements constrained as to directional accuracy are reviewed. In all cases, increasing complexity of the movement consistently increased response latency; control RT levels agreed with well-established typical values for auditory and visual stimuli. Following practice the complexity effect leveled off, retaining a significant latency differential. Results from experiments varying duration of a held movement position (with movement minimal and complexity invariant) are not relevant to these studies.  相似文献

Eysenck (1967) has reviewed evidence which suggests that introverts have a higher level of arousal than extraverts. Moreover, Gray (1967) has proposed that introverts have weak nervous systems, in the Russian terminology. Studies of simple reaction time such as that of Mangan and Farmer (1967) have posed problems for these views, but it is suggested that this may have been due to criterion differences between introverts and extraverts. In the present study a simple visual reaction-time task and a signal-detection task were conducted side by side. No significant differences between introverts and extraverts were found in measures of strength derived from the former, or measures of criterion derived from the latter. However, high N Ss were found to have a significantly lower value for Nebylitsyn's index of the slope of the reaction time/stimulus intensity function, thus supporting the view that high N Ss have relatively weak nervous systems.  相似文献

This essay reviews research on interhemispheric transfer time derived from simple unimanual reaction time to hemitachistoscopically presented visual stimuli. Part 1 reviews major theoretical themes including (a) the significance of the eccentricity effect on interhemispheric transfer time in the context of proposed underlying neurohistological constraints; (b) the significance of gender differences in interhemispheric transfer time and findings in dyslexics and left-handers in the context of a fetal brain testosterone model; and (c) the significance of complexity effects on interhemispheric transfer time in a context of dynamic vs. hard-wired concepts of the underlying interhemispheric communication systems. Part 2 consists of a meta-analysis of 49 published behavioral experiments, in view of drawing a portrait of the best set of experimental conditions apt to produce salient, reliable, and statistically significant measures of interhemispheric transfer time, namely (a) index rather than thumb response, (b) low rather than high target luminance, (c) short rather than prolonged target display, and (d) very eccentric rather than near-foveal stimulus location. Part 3 proposes a theoretical model of interhemispheric transfer time, postulating the measurable existence of fast and slow interhemispheric channels. The proposed mechanism's evolutionary adaptive value, the neurophysiological evidence in its support, and favorable functional evidence from studies of callosotomized patients are then presented followed by proposals for critical experimental tests of the model.  相似文献
