The present study was designed to study generalization and differentiation and to check the relation between heart rate and blood pressure in cardiovascular conditioning. Five naive mongrel dogs were presented with 10 sec 1000 cps tone regularly reinforced with 0.5-sec shock to a left foreleg. Four other 10-sec tones (600, 800, 1200, 1400 cps), never reinforced, were administered in a randomized and counterbalanced fashion using a differential reinforcing technique. The response measures were heart rate and three indices of blood pressure,i.e., systolic, diastolic, and pulse pressures.“Initial response” of heart rate showed rapid tachycardia to all tones, with no generalization and differentiation among five tones.“Terminal response” clearly indicated generalization gradients that tachycardia to 800 and 1200 cps tones were higher than those to 600 and 1400 cps tones, respectively. Some differences were noted among systolic, diastolic, and pulse pressures, with pulse pressure showing a trend of generalization and differentiation in the“initial response.” No statistical difference, however, was obtained in blood pressure scores. Beat-by-beat analyses of correlations between heart rate and diastolic blood pressure showed that the correlations successively decreased during the“terminal response.” Overall correlations between heart rate and three indices of blood pressure were obtained, with the highest correlation between heart rate and pulse pressure. Considering the above results in relation to the classical conditioning theory, it was tentatively concluded that“initial response” includes non-conditional factors, while“terminal response” reflects mainly a true conditional response, particularly, at a long CS-US interval. This interpretation leads to the hypothesis that conditional response with a short CS-US interval may attain better conditioning scores in terms of the summation effect between a non-conditional factor and a true conditional factor.  相似文献

Measurements of monocular ΔI and PSE as a function of the ISI between two 2-deg foveal fields successively presented to the same retinal area were obtained for two Standard durations, using the method of constant stimuli. Binocular brightness matches of the stimuli revealed that detection of a difference occurred whenever a constant difference (in log mL) in matching luminance existed. The implication of the results was that ΔI is related to the rate of change of brightness with changes in test-field luminance.  相似文献

The creation of moralities is necessary for the enhancement of the species, yet, the assigning of values is a sign of decadence. According to Nietzsche, this is the problem of decadence with which human beings (in particular philosophers) must contend: they must place a value on life, but placing a value on life (even on one's individual life) is problematic because it involves fracturing the whole of life into pieces. The primary objective in this paper is to address Nietzsche's own battle with the problem of decadence as it applies to individuals. I will argue that in this battle, Nietzsche carried out a revaluation of decadence and transformed himself into a strong decadent. In calling himself a strong decadent, Nietzsche not only admitted to his own decadence, but also provided himself as an example for how other strong types might contend with the problem of decadence.  相似文献

In non-human animals, the relationship between testosterone and aggression is well established. In humans, the relationship is more controversial. To clarify the relationship, Archer conducted three meta-analyses and found a weak, positive relationship between testosterone and aggression. Unfortunately, each of the analyses included only five to six studies. The aim of the present study was to re-examine the relationship between testosterone and aggression with a larger sample of studies. The present analyses are based on 45 independent studies (N=9760) with 54 independent effect sizes. Only studies that reported a p-value or effect size were included in the analyses and the sample may underestimate the proportion of non-significant findings in the population. Correlations ranged from −0.28 to 0.71. The mean weighted correlation (r=0.14) corroborates Archer's finding of a weak positive relationship.  相似文献

The relationship between anxiety and stuttering is equivocal from both clinical and empirical perspectives. This study examined the relationship within the framework of the multidimensional interaction model of anxiety that includes an approach to general anxiety in specific situations [J. Pers. Soc. Psychol. 60 (1991) 919]. Ninety-four males aged 18-43, half disfluent speakers and half fluent speakers completed two questionnaires: The Trait Anxiety Inventory [C.D. Spielberger, R.L. Gorsuch, R.E. Lushene, Manual for the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Self Evaluation Questionnaire), Consulting Psychologists Press, Palo Alto, CA, 1970] and the Speech Situation Checklist [G.J. Brutten, Neurolinguistic Approaches to Stuttering, Mouton, The Hague; G.J. Brutten, Stuttering: A Second Symposium, Harper and Row, New York, 1973; G.J. Brutten, P. Janssen, Proceedings 18th Congress of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrists, Washington, DC, 1975; M. Vanryckeghem, Proceedings of the XXIVth Congress of the International Association of Logopedists and Phoniatrists, Nijmegen University Press, Nijmegen, 1981]. In addition, after performing speech and non-speech tasks, participants evaluated their level of anxiety on a subjective scale, labeled Task-Related Anxiety--TRA. The stuttering group also evaluated the level of severity of their stuttering. Findings indicate that trait anxiety is higher among people who stutter compared to fluent speakers, thus indicating that anxiety is a personality trait of people who stutter. State anxiety in social communication is higher among severe stutterers as compared to mild stutterers and fluent speakers. Thus, state anxiety is related to stuttering severity. The results are discussed in the frame of the multidimensional model of anxiety. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: The reader will be able to: (1) describe the multidimensional anxiety model; (2) extend the model to the relations between stuttering and anxiety; (3) describe stuttering severity in relation to the levels of anxiety within the model.  相似文献

People remember lists of vowel-contrasting syllables better than lists that vary only in stop consonant identity. Most views suggest that this difference is due to the structure of immediate memory and the greater discriminability of vowels compared with consonants. In all of these views, there is a presumed systematic relationship between discriminability and recall so that the more discriminable an item, the better that item should be recalled. The 11 experiments reported here measured the relative discriminability of and compared serial recall for (1) intact syllables that varied only in the medial vowel, (2) intact syllables that varied only in the initial consonant, and (3) syllables with the center vowel replaced by silence (so-called silent-center vowels). When item discriminability, as measured by identification, was equated for consonant-contrasting and silent-center lists, serial recall performance was also equal. However, even when the vowels were less discriminable than the consonants or silentcenter vowels, serial recall performance for the vowels was still better. These results are problematic for theories based on acoustic discriminability but can be explained parsimoniously by Nairne’s (1990) feature model.  相似文献

Psychometric functions and the associated indices of discriminative performance (i.e., the point of subjective equality [PSE], just noticeable difference, and Weber fraction) were obtained with the method of constant stimuli using perceptual and remembered line-length standards. Three important results were obtained. First, comparisons with a perceptual or a remembered standard were sensitive to variations of absolute stimulus differences with a common ratio; that is, Weber's law was violated. Second, relative to discriminative performance with the longest and shortest remembered standards, comparisons involving mid-range remembered standards displayed increased variability in the PSE and inflated Weber fractions, characteristic of a reduction in the quality of the memorial representation. Finally, large and negative time-order errors (TOE) were observed for successive line judgments but not for those involving remembered standards. The implications of these findings for research concerned with the relationships between perception and memory, as well as the TOE phenomenon, are discussed.  相似文献

This article reports a meta-analysis comparing the size of repetition priming in full and divided-attention (DA) conditions. The main analysis included 38 effect sizes (ES) extracted from 21 empirical studies, for a total of 2074 (full-attention) and 2148 (divided-attention) participants. The mean weighted ES was 0.357 (95% CI = 0.278–0.435), indicating that divided attention produced a small, but significant, negative effect on implicit memory. Overall, the distinction between identification and production priming provided the best fit to empirical data (with the effect of DA being greater for production tests), whereas there was no significant difference between perceptual and conceptual priming. A series of focused contrasts suggested that word-stem completion might be influenced by lexical–conceptual processes, and that perceptual identification might involve a productive component. Implications for current theories of implicit memory are discussed.  相似文献

Revaluation refers to phenomena in which the strength of an operant is altered by reinforcer-related manipulations that take place outside the conditioning situation in which the operant was selected. As an example, if lever pressing is acquired using food as a reinforcer and food is later paired with an aversive stimulus, the frequency of lever pressing decreases when subsequently tested. Associationist psychology infers from such findings that conditioning produces a response-outcome (i.e., reinforcer) association and that the operant decreased in strength because pairing the reinforcer with the aversive stimulus changed the value of the outcome. Here, we present an approach to the interpretation of these and related findings that employs neural network simulations grounded in the experimental analysis of behavior and neuroscience. In so doing, we address some general issues regarding the relations among behavior analysis, neuroscience, and associationism.  相似文献

Ss sorted through decks of cards bearing five-element patterns, separating those in which all five were identical from those in which one of the five was different from the remaining four. Sorting time depended on the configuration and size of the pattern in which the elements were arranged but was independent of the goodness of these patterns. It was concluded that Ss did not attend to the patterns themselves, but just to the elements comprising them in searching for the discrepant element. The differences owing to the patterns appear to be due in part to the compactness of the configurations.  相似文献

Rats were trained in a conditioned taste aversion paradigm in order to determine whether a trace interval between the conditioned stimulus (CS) and the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) would result in the forgetting of stimulus attributes. Accordingly, subjects were conditioned with milk (CS), given either an immediate or a delayed injection of lithium chloride (UCS), and tested 48 h later with either milk or chocolate milk, a generalized flavor. The rats conditioned immediately following the presentation of the CS avoided milk more than chocolate milk, indicating discrimination between the two flavors. Those conditioned after a trace interval avoided both flavors equally, suggesting a loss of stimulus attributes of the original CS. Delay rats, however, still exhibited substantial learning when compared with controls not experiencing the UCS. These results allege a role for the forgetting of stimulus attributes during a trace interval in addition to following a complete learning episode.  相似文献
