Bilingualism has risen dramatically due to increased migration patterns all over the world. This paper offers an overview of the current literature dealing specifically with bi- and multilingualism, and identifies a gap in systemic and family therapy literature about the subject of bilingualism. In the light of this, the author proposes a working definition of bilingual families. Some case examples illustrate different aspects of working systemically with a bilingual family and highlight potential challenges for a therapist, such as the assumption of more knowledge and expertise. The tools suggested relate to a rethinking of some modernist ideas regarding hypothesizing, and both the use of a social constructionist perspective and of self of the (bilingual) family therapist. A case is made for the exploration of meanings of difference including the lingua-cultural one. The author ends with a plea to start including more specific cultural issues such as bilingualism in systemic therapy practice.  相似文献

If the theories of Jerome Frank, Jay Halley, and Hans Strupp are considered as a conversation with the spirit of psychoanalysis, the subject of the conversation appears to be the struggle involved in psychotherapy. Beyond implying that there is such a struggle, the theories do not satisfactorily establish its nature. The author suggests that the struggle may have to do with the therapist's insistence on what Frank calls a sheltered environment for patient experimentation.  相似文献

This paper explores counselling and psychotherapy as a form of learning. Previous experiences may create distortions in meaning-making perspectives, distortions that create templates for evaluating future experience. These templates act as barriers to being open to experience; thus there is an inability to learn from experience. The process of therapy can provide a learning milieu for the exploration and working through of these barriers, with a potential outcome of a return to learning from experience. It is suggested here that intrinsic to the learning milieu created in therapy there are elements of significant, transformative and emotional learning. Therapy is thus a reparative discourse that facilitates a return to learning from experience. A deconstruction of this concept is provided here as a way of developing the exploration of counselling and psychotherapy as a form of learning.  相似文献

Although almost a century old, group psychotherapy has experienced an unprecedented expansion over the last 50 years. By the 1970s, human helping groups had found application in virtually all the human services, including the media. The growth of professional organizations for group work specialists was accompanied by a burgeoning literature and by accelerated research endeavors. The recent advent of the managed health care "revolution" has shaken the very foundations of this prospering group psychotherapy movement. Undue pressure from third-party payers for greater accountability and for cost-containment has come to threaten the traditional autonomy and dedication to quality of care by group therapy practitioners. Professional organizations have begun to meet these challenges by educational endeavors addressed at insurers, legislators, and the public. Current training programs and literature for clinicians have focused on the need for a new "business orientation" and on less costly group treatment measures (i.e., short-term and combined). Given group therapy's proven effectiveness, coupled with its practitioners' flexibility, the movement is bound to regain its secure footing at the dawn of the new millennium.  相似文献

Technological advances in the computer and communication fields (the internet, social networks, virtual realities,) have created a world in which most of our patients, especially pre-adolescents and adolescents, are immersed. In this paper we think about the meaning of ‘digital natives’ communication in the framework of the therapeutic relationship and the resulting countertransference. Interactions through technology, we argue, significantly reduce the difference between being together and being separate and can make it very difficult to experience a feeling of authentic intimacy or loss. Furthermore, exploring the world through the web does not provide children with the opportunity to ask questions and give voice to their doubts: it is a one-direction communication. These elements need to be considered in the therapeutic relationship with pre-adolescents and adolescents. In this paper we present three cases in which the world of internet enters into the sessions and we illustrate the countertransference this arouses and how it needs to be worked through.  相似文献

In a well known story Derek Parfit describes a disconnection between two entities that normally (in real life) travel together through space and time, namely your personal identity consisting of both mind and body. Realising the possibility of separation, even if it might never happen in real life, new questions arise that cast doubt on old solutions. In human reproduction, in real life, at present the fetus spends approximately nine months inside the pregnant woman. But, we might envisage other possibilities.Historically, the first era is the normal conception inside the woman, the growth of the fetus in the womb and then, after nine months, birth and the appearance of a new individual. The second era is In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). The fetus starts outside the woman as a fertilised egg, moves to the body of the woman and spends nine month there, where the body of the woman and the fetus travel together in space-time to separate at birth. In the third era of reproductive ectogenesis, the two never travel together. The fetus spends its gestational time entirely outside the woman’s body. We have two entities separated in space-time the whole time. The intimate connection consisting in the fetus being a part of the woman’s body is gone.In this paper I will briefly comment on the three eras of human reproduction — and primarily on the relationship between the new individual and the woman — and then spend some time with a fictional story illustrating some moral consequences of the third era. The story is from Pig Pharmaceuticals Limited and how they in the year 2050 report the successful development of pig-related pregnancies with transgenic pigs as surrogate mothers.  相似文献

Since existentialism lost its influence in philosophy in the 1960s, postmodern theory has taken over criticizing basic concepts of western thought. From a postmodern point of view, the main shortcomings of existentialism is that it criticizes traditional unitarian concepts, while re-inventing new unitarian models. Against these unitarian approaches postmodernism holds that the world can only be described in terms of difference. In this article the postmodern program and its differences from existentialism are explained in reference to three concepts of western philosophy: subject, truth, and ethics. Applying these concepts, the relevance of postmodernism for medical theory is illustrated.  相似文献
