Black children's perceptions of Black English

In studying the perception of differences between Black English and Standard English by 48 first-grade, urban, Black children, BE and SE were partitioned into content, i.e., syntax and lexicon, and style, i.e., suprasegmentals or prosodic features of phonology. A discrimination task was designed to test whether the subjects could perceive differences in terms of style or content or both. Accurate discriminations were related to language variety preference and school and home-street register maintenance. The results indicated BE style to be as significantly related to BE preference and register maintenance as BE content when the two were separated.     

A review of Lacan's seminar on anxiety1

The seminar on anxiety marks a turning point in the development of Lacan's thought from several perspectives. First, Lacan implicitly abandons his theory that the unconscious is structured like a language. He also abandons the endeavour to identify Freud's theory with his own. He develops some original new ideas about anxiety, some of which are of great interest, such as the connection between castration anxiety and narcissism; others, such as his denial of the existence of separation anxiety, are absurd. Lacan's main point of divergence from Freud, his rejection of the inner world, also emerges clearly in this seminar.

Dimensions of Black Suicide: A Theoretical Model

ABSTRACT: This paper has two purposes: (1) to develop a theoretical model of suicide, based on the previous work of Henry and Short, and (2) to apply that model in the study of black suicides in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. In so doing, we are focusing on suicide among a traditionally low-status, low-suicide population group, one which Henry and Short cited in support of the positive relationship between status and suicide. The generality of the theory is thus examined in this and other ways. The theory of “external restraints” is only weakly sustained by this analysis. More adequate testing of the theory must await further data, with careful attention to the subjective aspects of hypothesized structural relationships.     

A consideration of knowledge and authority in the case seminar

This paper examines difficulties in the management of knowledge and authority evidenced in some case seminar settings. The author suggests that the traditional model for the case seminar has not kept pace with evolving ideas about authority and knowledge in the psychoanalytic situation. The tension between our current ways of conceptualizing knowledge and authority in psychoanalysis, and the often unwitting idealization and constriction of knowledge and authority in the case seminar format, are explored. Following a review of the literature on the case seminar, three recommendations for change are discussed: (1) differentiation of the goals of the seminar from those of supervision; (2) reconsideration of the way in which the 'failed case" is discussed; and (3) encouragement of the instructor to present clinical material.     

Virtual visiting seminar replaces verbatim seminar in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

The article addresses the question of the value of the virtual visiting seminar compared to the verbatim seminar in a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Unit. A Virtual Visit occurs when a volunteer allows a CPE student to engage them in a pastoral visit with the expressed purpose of providing feedback to the student. The effectiveness of the virtual visiting seminar was monitored by a Site Review Team, two independent expert witnesses, by students who have experienced both learning tools, and the Education Sub Committee of the Pastoral Care Advisory Committee. The results point to advantages of the virtual visiting seminar over the verbatim seminar.     

Black College Women's Career Values: A Preliminary Investigation

We identified nine values that guided the career decisions of a sample of Black college women, then explored whether these values were predicted by racial and feminist identify stage sentiments Findings from this study suggest the need for further research on the career development of women of color.
