Critical processes in serial short-term memory: A developmental study

Two experiments are described which were designed to test the possible involvement of two operations in developmental auditory serial short-term memory (SSTM), namely rehearsal proficiency and item identification. The experiments provided mainly negative support for the notion that these operations are critical in developmental SSTM. As an alternative, the possibility that developmental differences in SSTM might have their origins in the processing of speech sound patterns was discussed.     

上海简"怀尔明德"探析

上海博物馆《论诗》简展出时,笔者发现简７上部稍残断,前当有缺简。此简可隶定、标点为：“……怀尔明德”曷？诚谓之也;“有命自天,命此文王”,诚命之也,信矣。卜子曰：此命也夫！文王虽欲也,得乎？此命也“有命自天,命此文王”见于《大雅·大明》,则很明显前“怀尔明德”亦当为引文,《诗论》此简是引《诗》文而论《诗》。从“诚命之也”对应“有命自天”之形式来看,“怀尔明德”前当有一“谓”字,与“诚谓之也”之“谓”对应。《大雅·皇矣》有：“帝谓文王：予怀明德”一句,与此较接近,只是“予怀明德”与“怀尔明德”不同…     

Critical flicker fusion in normal elderly subjects; a cross-sectional community study

Critical Flicker Fusion Thresholds (CFFTs) were measured in 644 elderly people identified from community-based general practice records, and the relationship of CFFT with age was investigated. The CFFT was measured using the method of limits with mean scores for three ascending (flicker/fusion) and three descending (fusion/flicker) presentations being recorded. The difference between the ascending and descending means was found to be significantly correlated with age (r=−0.131,P<0.001) and may reflect a reduced sensitivity of the Central Nervous System to suprathreshold flicker with increasing age. The results suggest that CFFT measurement has an important role to play in gerontological research as an objective measure of cognitive aspects of the ageing process.     

Critical analysis of a study on field dependence in young children.

Kojima's conclusion that our method of scoring performance in the rod-and-frame test did not produce satisfactory results in young children was invalid because our scoring method was used incorrectly, fallacious reasoning was used to reject our scoring method, subjects were classified wrongly, and the procedure used to test vertical perception in the children probably was unreliable.     

A Critical Look at Critical Community Psychology

This paper presents some questions directed to: (1) problematise researchers, practitioners and students, about ideas and practices in Community Psychology (CP), that are becoming naturalized as the perfect o the best models and processes; (2) allowing traditional practices to be sheltered under the name of critical, transforming, participatory and liberating CP. Critical questions about two types of issues are asked: Those related to horizon, limits, and theoretical scope of CP, and those related to the canonization of PC methods and techniques. The distinction between what is radical and what is critical is argued. Reflexive discussion in order to find how a theoretical or methodological conception introduces forms of oppression, or exclusion, as well as deconstruction of ways to ignore values and principles, even in the name of a transforming, liberating, participatory CP, is concluded.
