We investigated whether macaque monkeys possess the ability to prepare abstract tasks in advance. We trained two monkeys to use different stimulus-response (S-R) mappings. On each trial, monkeys were first informed with a visual cue which of two S-R mapping to use. Following a delay, a visual target was presented to which they would respond with a left or right button-press. We manipulated delay time between cue and target and found that performance was faster and more accurate with longer delays, suggesting that monkeys used the delay time to prepare each task in advance. Hand preferences were recorded for 35 rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) as they manipulated a joystick in response to 2 computerized tasks. These preferences were then used to contrast 8 left- and 10 right-handed subjects on performance measures of hand skill. Individual hand preferences were found, but no significant population asymmetry was observed across the sample. However, the performance data reveal substantial benefits of right-handedness for joystick manipulation, as this group of monkeys mastered the 2 psychomotor tasks significantly faster than did their left-handed counterparts. The data support earlier reports of a right-hand advantage for joystick manipulation and also support the importance of distinguishing between hand preference and manual performance in research on functional asymmetries.  相似文献

Lateral preference was examined in spontaneous feeding actions in 2 troops of wild vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). Processing of 4 foods (termites, leaf shoots, sugarcane, and fruit) was studied. Actions included unimanual reaching to moving objects, operating from an unstable posture, and coordinated bimanual processing. Between 19 and 31 subjects were available, according to the task. In 2 tasks, laterality of 2 independent stages was measured separately, giving 6 measures in all. On 4 of these measures, most monkeys were ambipreferent, and only a few showed significant hand preferences. Only for termite feeding and detaching material from fruits did the majority show significant lateralization; no tasks elicited exclusive use of 1 hand. Preference appeared labile, because in 2 tasks, population trends reversed with increasing age. No population trends to left or right were found; instead, these monkeys showed ambilaterality, with lateralization associated with task complexity.  相似文献

In a recent article MacNeilage, Studdert-Kennedy, and Lindblom (1987) proposed that nonhuman primate handedness may be contingent on the specific task requirements with visual-spatial tasks yielding left-hand preferences and fine motor tasks producing right-hand preferences. This study reports hand preferences in the manipulation of joysticks by 2 rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and 3 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Reach data were also collected on these same subjects and served as a basis for comparison with preference data for manipulation of the joystick. The data indicated that all 5 subjects demonstrated significant right-hand preferences in manipulating the joystick. In contrast, no significant hand preferences were found for the reach data. Reaction time data also indicated that the right hand could perform a perceptual-motor task better than the left hand in all 5 subjects. Overall, the data indicate that reach tasks may not be sensitive enough measures to produce reliable hand preferences, whereas tasks that assess fine motor control produce significant hand preferences.  相似文献

The relative preferences of rhesus monkeys for reward probability versus amount were investigated with procedures which contrasted general experience with specific instructions, and evaluated the relationship between probability-amount combinations and preference strength. Four stimulus objects, each signifying a different combination of reward frequency and amount (100% with one unit; 50% with two units; 33% with three units; or 25% with four units), were presented in pairs, one pair per daily session, with trial schedules providing the same amount of reward within each set of 12 trials. In Phase A, 4 monkeys (Group 1) were tested on the six choice-pairs with no preliminary training. In Phase B, Group 1 was joined by an additional 4 monkeys (Group 2), and each of the tasks was preceded by a demonstration of the relevant stimuli, one at a time, together with their associated probabilities and amounts. Group 1 animals developed preferences during Phase A for the more frequently rewarded objects, which persisted into Phase B, whereas Group 2 animals showed no preferences. This result indicates that preliminary instructions concerning the reward combinations associated with stimulus objects can prevent the development of a preference for greater probability over greater amount of reward, but cannot extinguish it once it has been formed or reestablished within the context of a particular task.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate interlimb coordination in young and older adults with and without a history of falls during the combined task of walking and prehension with different levels of manual task difficulty. Participants walked on a pathway and grasped a dowel. A vector coding technique evaluated coordination patterns. The coordination pattern was not affected by the difficulty level of the manual task. Older adults seemed to prioritize the movement of the right shoulder to grasp the dowel and then ‘froze’ the movement of the other joint (left shoulder) not directly involved in the grasping task. The preference to pick up the dowel in the double support phase and the increase in right shoulder phase made by older adults with a history of falls suggests an even greater decoupling between walking and prehension.  相似文献

Fixed-ratio behavior of monkeys was analyzed separately for two hands. While one hand responded on the fixed-ratio schedule the other performed a holding response and the function of the hands changed in alternate ratio runs. After performance was stable on the fixed ratio (70 responses, two monkeys; 100 responses, two monkeys, 120 responses, two monkeys) 90 sessions of further training equalized post-reinforcement pauses and the mean interresponse time of the two hands. Hand preference in reaching for food remained unchanged. Then, the fixed-ratio requirement was changed (a) in small sequential steps, (b) in two large steps, and, (c) within sessions alternating two runs at a high ratio with two runs at a low ratio. The mean duration of post-reinforcement pauses was correlated with a fixed ratio maintained throughout a session but single pauses were neither controlled by the immediately preceding nor by the following ratio run when a cue to its length was available. The mean interresponse time was insensitive to changes in fixed ratio. The fixed-ratio performance was generally similar to that of pigeons and rats.  相似文献

Four rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were tested on joystick-based computer tasks in which they could choose to be reinforced either with pellets-only or with pellets + video. A variety of videotapes were used to reinforce task performance. The monkeys significantly preferred to be rewarded with a pellet and 10 s of a blank screen than a pellet plus 10 s of videotape. When they did choose to see videotaped images, however, they were significantly more likely to view video of themselves than video of their roommate or of unfamiliar conspecifics. These data support earlier findings of individual differences in preference for video reinforcement, and have clear implications for the study of face-recognition and self-recognition by nonhuman primates.  相似文献

As work in organizations becomes more fluid and fast paced the effective execution of tasks often requires people to be temporally adaptable in working with others. This paper brings to light the importance of understanding how people relate to time in the context of social interactions. By integrating the research on time and social motives, we develop a relational perspective about time. We introduce the construct of synchrony preference, an individual difference that describes a willingness to adapt one's pace and rhythm within social interactions for the purpose of creating synchrony with others. We develop a measure of synchrony preference that we validate using multiple methods across 4 studies and 7 samples, which include over 1,400 individuals. In particular, we establish a nomological network and show that synchrony preference predicts flexible pacing behaviors, interpersonal facilitation, contribution to team synchrony, contribution to team performance, and job dedication. Our results reveal that both scholars and practitioners can benefit from considering people's preference for synchrony when working with others.  相似文献

Right hemisphere damaged patients with and without left visual neglect, and age-matched controls had objects of various sizes presented within left or right body hemispace. Subjects were asked to estimate the objects' sizes or to reach out and grasp them, in order to assess visual size processing in perceptual-experiential and action-based contexts respectively. No impairments of size processing were detected in the prehension performance of the neglect patients but a generalised slowing of movement was observed, associated with an extended deceleration phase. Additionally both patient groups reached maximum grip aperture relatively later in the movement than did controls. For the estimation task it was predicted that the left visual neglect group would systematically underestimate the sizes of objects presented within left hemispace but no such abnormalities were observed. Possible reasons for this unexpected null finding are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine hand preference in the use and manufacture of probing tools by tufted capuchin and lion-tailed macaque monkeys (Cebus apella and Macaca silenus). Hand preference for the tool-using sequence was noted in 4 of 5 capuchins (a left-hand preference was noted in 3 ss) and 3 of 4 macaques (a left-hand preference was noted in 2 ss). The monkeys frequently used bimanual action in the initial and final segments of the 3-component task and typically modified tools through coordinated action of the hands and teeth. These data provide evidence consistent with the hypotheses that (a) hemisphere specialization for manual control evolved in primates prior to intensive use of tools by early hominids and (b) monkeys prefer the left hand for precise, visually guided, manipulative actions.  相似文献

The present investigation examined the role of the right cerebral hemisphere in linguistic perception following a left cerebral insult which had resulted in aphasia. Auditory dichotic procedures were utilized to investigate the ear-preferences of 30 aphasic Ss, grouped relative to the amount of time since the onset of left cerebral insult, and a group of 10 normal control Ss. An oral-response task and a pointing-response task were given. Statistical analyses showed a significant left-ear preference for aphasic Ss who were more than 6 mo. post-cerebral insult; however, Ss less than 6 mo. post-cerebral insult did not demonstrate a significant ear-preference under auditory dichotic stimulation. In contrast, a significant right-ear preference was noted for the normal controls. Significant differences were not shown for the aphasic or control groups on the oral and pointing tasks.  相似文献

This investigation was designed to determine whether perceived control effects found in humans extend to rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) tested in a video-task format, using a computer-generated menu program, SELECT. Choosing one of the options in SELECT resulted in presentation of 5 trials of a corresponding task and subsequent return to the menu. In Experiments 1-3, the animals exhibited stable, meaningful response patterns in this task (i.e., they made choices). In Experiment 4, performance on tasks that were selected by the animals significantly exceeded performance on identical tasks when assigned by the experimenter under comparable conditions (e.g., time of day, order, variety). The reliable and significant advantage for performance on selected tasks, typically found in humans, suggests that rhesus monkeys were able to perceive the availability of choices.  相似文献

Seven bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata) with strong hand preferences in performing a computer-generated joystick task that required directing a cursor to contact a small stationary target on a monitor were given comparable experience with each hand on the task over a 5-week period. Hand use was randomly restricted to either only the left or only the right hand across trials by automatically inputting into a computer the unique identification numbers of microchips implanted in the forearms of each macaque. Subsequent presentation of a novel task requiring maintenance of contact between a cursor and a moving target revealed no performance difference between preferred and nonpreferred hands or between left and right hands on the basis of number of errors or time to complete the task. The findings suggest that the strong hand preference for these tasks does not derive from a performance advantage for the preferred hand.  相似文献

The performance of young and adult capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) on a Concurrent Discrimination Learning (CDL) test and a Delayed Non-Matching to Sample (DNMS) task were investigated. Results indicate that all subjects were able to learn the CDL test with 20-pairs simultaneously and retain this stimulus/reward association within 24-h interval. In contrast, young subjects did not perform the DNMS task with the same proficiency as adults. While adults' scores were above chance across all memory test delays, the young capuchin monkeys performed the test by chance level. These results support the hypothesis that these two tasks require different cognitive processes mediated by two independent neural systems with a differentiated ontogenetic development. Moreover, they provide evidence that this dissociation occurs not only in humans and Old World monkeys but also in the New World capuchin monkeys indicating that this species can be a valuable alternative model for investigations of the neurobiological basis of memory.  相似文献

This study investigated handedness and drawing by preschoolers. An observational method for repeated measurement of hand preference is presented. A sample of 381 children (191 girls, 190 boys) ranging in age from 48 to 71 mo. was tested for drawing and hand preference on 14 tasks. Consistent hand preference was defined as always using a particular hand (left or right) for the same task. Girls with consistent hand preference showed better drawing scores compared to girls with inconsistent hand preference. The results showed the importance of a reliable method for measuring hand preference within a single task as early as preschool age.  相似文献

Comparative studies of forward and backward chaining have led some to suggest that sensitivity to each teaching procedure may be idiosyncratic across learners and tasks. The purposes of the current study were threefold. First, we assessed differential sensitivity to each chaining procedure within children when presented with multiple learning tasks of similar content but different complexity. Second, we evaluated whether differential sensitivity to a chaining procedure during a brief task predicted differential sensitivity during the teaching of longer tasks. Third, we directly assessed children's preferences for each teaching procedure via a concurrent-chains preference assessment. Learners acquired all target skills introduced under both chaining conditions, but individual children did not consistently learn more efficiently with either procedure. Short-duration tasks were not predictive of performance in tasks of longer duration. Both chaining procedures were preferred over a baseline condition without prompting, but participants did not demonstrate a preference for either procedure.  相似文献

Typically, prehension and gait behaviors are studied separately. However, little is known about what changes occur in these motor skills when they are combined. We investigated and characterized motor performance during combined walking and prehension at different levels of difficulty of the prehension task. Fifteen right-handed young adults were invited to walk at their self-selected pace and grasp a dowel as they walked. They also grasped the dowel in a stationary condition (upright stance). We combined conditions with/without obstacles and stable/unstable base for dowel prehension. Modifications in gait and prehension were identified when they were combined, especially for the most difficult prehension conditions. The grasping task caused an adaptation in gait because the participants preferred to adopt a more conservative strategy of increasing their dynamic stability during the approach phase and when grasping the dowel. Walking changed the prehension movement by reducing the reaching movement time, peak wrist velocity, and peak grip aperture velocity. In addition, the peak grip aperture was affected by the presence of obstacles close to the dowel. The participants adjusted their gait during the approach phase to facilitate dowel prehension, and they controlled the hand position online to adjust its configuration based on the prehension conditions.  相似文献
