Although the social brain hypothesis has found near-universal acceptance as the best explanation for the evolution of extensive variation in brain size among mammals, it faces two problems. First, it cannot account for grade shifts, where species or complete lineages have a very different brain size than expected based on their social organization. Second, it cannot account for the observation that species with high socio-cognitive abilities also excel in general cognition. These problems may be related. For birds and mammals, we propose to integrate the social brain hypothesis into a broader framework we call cultural intelligence, which stresses the importance of the high costs of brain tissue, general behavioral flexibility and the role of social learning in acquiring cognitive skills.  相似文献

Some robots have been given emotional expressions in an attempt to improve human-computer interaction. In this article we analyze what it would mean for a robot to have emotion, distinguishing emotional expression for communication from emotion as a mechanism for the organization of behavior. Research on the neurobiology of emotion yields a deepening understanding of interacting brain structures and neural mechanisms rooted in neuromodulation that underlie emotions in humans and other animals. However, the chemical basis of animal function differs greatly from the mechanics and computations of current machines. We therefore abstract from biology a functional characterization of emotion that does not depend on physical substrate or evolutionary history, and is broad enough to encompass the possible emotions of robots.  相似文献

We describe how Rosburg and colleagues (2011) made this assumption, yielding potentially faulty conclusions about the recognition heuristic. Cognitive science has wholeheartedly embraced functional brain imaging, but introspective data are still eschewed to the extent that it runs against standard practice to engage in the systematic collection of introspective reports. However, in the case of executive processes associated with prefrontal cortex, imaging has made limited progress, whereas introspective methods have considerable unfulfilled potential. We argue for a re-evaluation of the standard 'cognitive mapping' paradigm, emphasizing the use of retrospective reports alongside behavioural and brain imaging techniques. Using all three sources of evidence can compensate for their individual limitations, and so triangulate on higher cognitive processes.  相似文献

Despite the advances in understanding cognitive improvements in executive function in adolescence, much less is known about the influence of affective and social modulators on executive function and the biological underpinnings of these functions and sensitivities. Here, recent behavioral and neuroscientific studies are summarized that have used different approaches (cognition, emotion, individual differences and training) in the study of adolescent executive functions. The combination of these different approaches gives new insight into this complex transitional phase in life, and marks adolescence as not only a period of vulnerabilities, but also great opportunities in terms of training possibilities and interventions.  相似文献

The advantages of presenting sensory data in terms of stimulus variables are stressed. Spectral sensitivity plots of local electroretinograms and ganglion cell discharges from the dark-adapted rabbit retina illustrate the utility of using this kind of procedure. Spectral data agreed with the literature demonstrating two cone and one rod process in this animal. The spectral sensitivities of both the local electroretinogram and ganglion cell spikes were closely similar. Data pertaining to pattern vision may also be subjected to the same type of analysis and described in terms of stimulus variables.  相似文献

The motion aftereffect (MAE) was measured with retinally moving vertical gratings positioned above and below (flanking) a retinally stationary central grating (experiments 1 and 2). Motion over the retina was produced by leftward motion of the flanking gratings relative to the stationary eyes, and by rightward eye or head movements tracking the moving (but retinally stationary) central grating relative to the stationary (but retinally moving) surround gratings. In experiment 1 the motion occurred within a fixed boundary on the screen, and oppositely directed MAEs were produced in the central and flanking gratings with static fixation; but with eye or head tracking MAEs were reported only in the central grating. In experiment 2 motion over the retina was equated for the static and tracking conditions by moving blocks of grating without any dynamic occlusion and disclosure at the boundaries. Both conditions yielded equivalent leftward MAEs of the central grating in the same direction as the prior flanking motion, ie an MAE was consistently produced in the region that had remained retinally stationary. No MAE was recorded in the flanking gratings, even though they moved over the retina during adaptation. When just two gratings were presented, MAEs were produced in both, but in opposite directions (experiments 3 and 4). It is concluded that the MAE is a consequence of adapting signals for the relative motion between elements of a display.  相似文献

Psychopaths commit a disproportionate amount of violent crime, and this places a substantial economic and emotional burden on society. Elucidation of the neural correlates of psychopathy may lead to improved management and treatment of the condition. Although some methodological issues remain, the neuroimaging literature is generally converging on a set of brain regions and circuits that are consistently implicated in the condition: the orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala, and the anterior and posterior cingulate and adjacent (para)limbic structures. We discuss these findings in the context of extant theories of psychopathy and highlight the potential legal and policy implications of this body of work.  相似文献

In this paper we will explore some of the biological and psychosocial factors that appear to be relevant to recovery of function following brain damage, especially in regard to neurorehabilitation programmes. We will also comment on promising areas of research that relate to recovery of function. Brain injury secondary to hypoxic-ischemic disease is the predominant form of all brain injury encountered in the perinatal period. The focus of this article is the most recent research developments in this field and especially those developments that should lead to the most profound effects on interventions in the first years of the new millennium. Neuronal injury is the predominant form of cellular injury in the term infant. The principal mechanisms leading to neuronal death after hypoxia-ischemia/reperfusion are initiated by energy depletion, accumulation of extracellular glutamate, and activation of glutamate receptors. The cascade of events that follows involves accumulation of cytosolic calcium and activation of a variety of calcium-mediated deleterious events. Notably this deleterious cascade, which evolves over many hours, may be interrupted even if interventions are instituted after termination of the insult, an important clinical point. Of the potential interventions, the leading candidates for application to the human infant in the relative short-term are mild hypothermia, inhibitors of free radical production, and free radical scavengers. Promising clinical data are available for the use of mild hypothermia.  相似文献

The temporal integration of luminous energy was compared in the fovea and at 7 degrees eccentricity using two-pulse stimuli and two methodologies. The two-pulse stimuli consisted of two 1-msec. light pulses separated by intervals of darkness ranging from 1 to 400 msec.; they were provided by a glow modulator tube transilluminating a 21.8' opal glass target. In Exp. 1 (equal-performance design), integration functions were generated using a forced-choice staircase procedure to estimate threshold luminance. The data for two Os showed that the critical duration (CD), and thus the period of complete integration, was briefer in the fovea than at 7 degrees. Beyond the CD, integration continued to differ for the two retinal locations. In the fovea, two-pulse stimuli beyond CD evidenced partial integration and at the longest stimulus durations no integration or inhibition. In contrast, at 7 degrees stimuli beyond CD appeared to evidence probability summation. In Exp. 2 (equal-energy design), integration functions were generated by measuring the detectability of two-pulse stimuli of different durations but equal in total luminous energy. A signal-detection procedure yielded measures of both response frequency and signal detectability, P(A). The data for two Os showed that for both measures CD was briefer in the fovea than at 7 degrees. Also, in the fovea, long two-pulse stimuli appeared to show no integration or inhibition. Both experiments then showed a foveal-peripheral difference in two-pulse measures of visual temporal integration, with the fovea evidencing less integration. In addition, the forced-choice and signal-detection procedures showed that these loci differences in integration were independent of the Os' response criterion.  相似文献
