This study examined the impact of the actual environment on changes in psychological adjustment over time. According to Self-Determination
Theory (SDT; Deci and Ryan, Intrinsic motivation and self-determination in human behavior, 1985a, Plenum, New York; J Res
Pers 19:109–134, 1985b; Psychol Inq 11:227–268, 2000), environments that are objectively supportive of autonomy should facilitate
psychological adjustment through their impact on people’s subjective perceptions of autonomy and self-determined motivation.
The present study tested this hypothesis using a prospective design with nursing homes residents. Results from structural
equation modeling showed that actual autonomy-supportive nursing home environments were positively associated with residents’
perceptions of autonomy that in turn predicted self-determined motivation in major life domains. Self-determined motivation,
in turn, predicted increases in psychological adjustment over a one-year period. Theoretical implications of the present findings
are discussed in line with SDT.

People experience autonomy when they perceive their behaviour to be volitional rather than driven by external controls. Previous
research has studied autonomy in relationships at a general level, focusing on people’s motivations to maintain their romantic
relationships, as measured by the Couple Motivation Questionnaire (CMQ; Blais et al., J Personal Soc Psychol 59:1021–1031,
1990). To supplement the CMQ, we developed the Motivations for Relational Activities (MRA) scale, which assesses the extent to
which people feel autonomous and controlled in a variety of specific relational activities. The purpose of this study is to
examine the unique contributions of general motivations to maintain a relationship (CMQ) and motivations toward specific relational
activities (MRA) in the prediction of relationship well-being. Results showed that the MRA and CMQ both independently and
significantly contributed to the prediction of relationship well-being (i.e., commitment, intimacy, satisfaction, and vitality
within the relationship) and were differentiated by their associations to dimensions of personality and attachment.

The current research tested the hypothesis that activity inhibition–conceptualized as the degree of restraint an individual
exercises over emotional and motivational impulses–moderates the association between congruence of implicit and explicit motives
and emotional well-being. Congruence of implicit and explicit motives was expected to be related to a more positive well-being
among individuals low in activity inhibition, but not among individuals high in activity inhibition. Two cross-sectional studies
(Study 1: N=72; Study 2: N=147) were conducted to test this hypothesis. Both studies found the predicted pattern of results for achievement motivation,
demonstrating that congruence of implicit and explicit achievement motivation was related to a more positive mood only for
participants low in activity inhibition. There was no evidence of congruence effects for affiliation motivation.

This article examines the relationship between life satisfaction and specific facets of psychological well-being (positive
relations with others and environmental mastery) by considering the moderating effect of significant components of personality,
i.e., traits, values, and implicit motives. Constructs were assessed by the Satisfaction With Life Scale, the Scales of Psychological
Well-Being (two subscales), the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, the Schwartz Value Survey (two value types), and a picture-story
test (implicit motives for achievement and affiliation–intimacy). Analyses revealed that values, implicit motives, and personality
traits moderated the relationship between both types of well-being measures. Findings indicate that personality components
reflecting significant strivings and needs play a crucial role in seeking well-being by assigning meaning to given life domains.

Satisfaction of the implicit affiliation motive is known to be positively related to emotional well-being, whereas the frustration
of the implicit affiliation motive leads to impairment of well-being. In the present research we specified two conditions
that are responsible for the satisfaction and frustration of the implicit motive. Referring to research on the congruence
of implicit and explicit motives, we assumed that a corresponding explicit affiliation motive leads to satisfaction of the
implicit motive. Corresponding affiliation behavior constitutes the second condition. Three studies confirmed the hypothesis
that both conditions must be fulfilled in order to positively connect the implicit affiliation motive to emotional well-being.
Participants with high implicit and explicit affiliation motives and who additionally showed a large amount of affiliation
behavior reported the lowest negative affectivity and the highest life satisfaction compared to participants who lacked one
of the conditions.

According to previous research, New Religious Movements (NRMs) seem to have a positive effect on the mental health of members
who join NRMs with some previous affective, cognitive or other vulnerabilities. The present study investigates the other,
less positive, side of the psychology of NRMs, i.e. elements that may be an obstacle to optimal development, such as rigidity
and low autonomy. In comparison to non-NRM members, members of various NRMs in Belgium ( N = 120) were found to be low in quest religious orientation (Altemeyer and Hunsberger, Int J Psychol Religion 2:113–133, 1992), to privilege conservation values to the detriment of openness to change values (Schwartz, Advances in experimental social psychology (vol 25, pp. 1–65). Orlando, FL: Academic Press, 1992), to show submissiveness to authority in hypothetical situations (projective measure), and to highly moralize judgments of
transgression relative to conventional domains (Turiel, The development of social knowledge: Morality and social convention. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1983). Discussion points out the idea that rigidity and restriction of autonomy may be the price to be paid for the structuring
role NRMs play with regard to previous vulnerabilities.

We assessed whether mindfulness (active categorization) can prevent automatic stereotype-activated behaviors related to the
elderly. Eighty participants (mean age = 24.4) were given a set of photographs to prime the dimension Old
Age and were asked to categorize them multiple times, to see whether the effect of the prime could be reduced through increased
mindfulness. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions, where they were asked to categorize the photographs
across (1) four self-generated categories; (2) four assigned categories; (3) a single category—Gender; or (4) a single category—Age.
Participants’ walking speed (cf. Bargh et al. 1996, Experiment 2) was then measured, as they moved between the two experimental stations. The results show that greater mindfulness
predicted greater walking speed, indicating a decrease in the effect of the automatic stereotype-activated behavior.

The basic principles of dispositional essentialism do not require that the fundamental spatiotemporal relations are dispositional
in nature. Nevertheless, Bird (who defends dispositional monism) argues that they possess dispositional essences in virtue
of the fact that the obtaining of these relations can be characterised by the satisfaction of a certain counterfactual. In
this paper I argue that his suggestion fails, and so, despite his attempt, the case of the spatiotemporal relations remains
the ‘big bad bug’ for the thesis of dispositional monism.

Three experimental studies tested whether a priming procedure intended to activate an autonomy orientation would lead to nondefensiveness
and enhanced performance, whether activated control orientation would lead to higher defense and impaired performance, and
whether activated impersonal orientation would lead to the greatest defense and worst performance. Study 1 showed that autonomy-primed
participants report lower desire for escape compared to control-primed, and that impersonally-primed showed most desire to
escape. In Study 2, autonomy-primed participants showed the least self-serving bias, control-primed were in the middle, and
impersonally-primed participants showed the most. In Study 3, rowers autonomy-primed showed the least self-handicapping and
best performance, control-primed showed moderate levels, and impersonally-primed showed the most self-handicapping and worst
performance. Results are discussed in terms of motivation orientation, defensiveness, and performance.

This article presents two studies aimed at validating a new TAT-like projective measure of autonomous motivation in children.
Study 1 assesses the validity of the new measure by correlating it with self-report questionnaires of autonomous motivation,
positive and negative affect, task value and mastery goal orientation. Study 2 is an experiment in which autonomous motivation
is manipulated and then assessed with the new projective measure and with a self-report scale. Results of both studies support
the validity of the new projective measure. In study 2, regression analysis suggests that the new projective measure is sensitive
to aspects of experimentally induced autonomous motivation that are not captured by a self-report measure.

The ground had been prepared by the nonjudgmental acceptance of people and symptoms by Humanistic psychotherapists, and by the increasing assimilation of Buddhist ideas into Western psychology and psychotherapy. In addition the word “mindfulness,” as the translation of the Pali sati, came to refer to both the manualized practice that provides the evidence for its efficacy in the hands of Kabat-Zinn and others, and the more complex process of clear comprehension and recollection that is described in his more discursive writings, and is similar to Ellen Langer’s use of “mindfulness” in her book of that name. 相似文献

As interest grows in mindfulness training as a psychosocial intervention, it is increasingly important to quantify this construct
to facilitate empirical investigation. The goal of the present studies was to develop a brief self-report measure of mindfulness
with items that cover the breadth of the construct and that are written in everyday language. The resulting 12-item measure
demonstrated acceptable internal consistency and evidence of convergent and discriminant validity with concurrent measures
of mindfulness, distress, well-being, emotion-regulation, and problem-solving approaches in three samples of university students.
To address potential construct contamination in two items, data are also presented on an alternate 10-item version of the
measure.

Exerting self-control appears to deplete a needed resource, which leads to poorer self-control subsequently. However, the
amount of depletion may vary, based on how controlling versus autonomy supportive the situation is. In particular, feeling
compelled to exert self-control may deplete more strength than having more freedom when exerting self-control. In three experiments,
participants who were given performance contingent rewards to exert self-control performed more poorly on a subsequent test
of self-control than participants who were non-contingent rewards. There were no differences in mood, arousal, or anxiety
between the groups; however, feelings of autonomy were related to self-control performance. The results have implications
for understanding self-control depletion, as well as the impact of autonomous motivation on self-control performance.

Relatively little is known about the factor structure of disruptive behavior among preadolescent girls. The present study
reports on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of disruptive girl behavior over four successive data waves as rated
by parents and teachers in a large, representative community sample of girls ( N = 2,451). Five factors were identified from parent ratings (oppositional behavior/conduct problems, inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity,
relational aggression, and callous-unemotional behaviors), and four factors were identified derived from teacher ratings (oppositional
behavior/conduct problems/callous-unemotional behaviors, inattention, hyperactivityimpulsivity, and relational aggression).
There was a high degree of consistency of items loading on equivalent factors across parent and teacher ratings. Year-to-year
stability of factors between ages five and 12 was high for parent ratings (ICC = 0.70 to 0.88), and slightly lower for teacher
ratings (ICC = 0.56 to 0.83). These findings are discussed in terms of possible adjustment to the criteria for children's
disruptive behavior disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.

One major assumption in the field of implicit learning is that implicit learning processes directly affect performance without
further top-down control (e.g., Destrebecqz and Cleeremans 2003). In three related experiments, the authors tested the so-called
“Not Letting Go Phenomenon” (Schneider and Fisk in J Exp Psychol Learn Mem Cogn 8:261–278, 1982); that is, the assumption
that accuracy instructions might impair the effect of implicit learning processes during skill acquisition. Results of Experiment
1 show that accuracy instructions can impair both, the behavioral and metacognitive effects of implicit learning. Experiments
2 and 3 indicate that this impairment is due more to an impairment of the performance effects of implicit learning processes than to a direct impairment of the learning processes, per se. While these results are in
accordance with recent findings in skill acquisition showing that monitoring processes impede experts’ performance, they seem
to contradict the above mentioned assumption that implicit learning processes directly affect performance.
