If the mouths of the pacmen of a Kanizsa square are colored, for example red, then an illusory red transparent square is seen. In many visual theories such 'neon color spreading' is explained by assimilation of chromatic and achromatic color. In this paper the achromatic case was investigated. In a two-alternative forced-choice task thirty observers judged the brightness of achromatic neon figures. The results suggest that assimilation of achromatic color inside and/or outside of the illusory figures cannot explain the brightness effects seen in achromatic neon color spreading. Although these displays may produce assimilation, it appears that contrast (perhaps acting nonlocally) is a stronger influence on their perceived brightness.  相似文献

In two experiments, we examined the effects of Stroop interference on the categorical perception (CP; better cross-category than within-category discrimination) of color. Using a successive two-alternative forced choice recognition paradigm (deciding which of two stimuli was identical to a previously presented target), which combined to-be-remembered colors with congruent and incongruent Stroop words, we found that congruent color words facilitated CP, whereas incongruent color words reduced CP. However, this was the case only when Stroop interference was presented together with the target color, but not when Stroop stimuli were introduced at the test stage. This suggests that target name, but not test name generation, affects CP. Target name generation may be important for CP because it acts as a category prime, which, in turn, facilitates cross-category discrimination.  相似文献

Theory and evidence proposing illumination, and therefore necessarily angle of incidence of light, as a perceptual cue for lightness judgments are described. In two experiments, angle of incidence was varied by having 46 Ss view an upright trapezoid that monocularly appeared flat and binocularly, upright. In the first experiment, numbers of cues to the direction of a fixed source above the trapezoid were varied and combined. In a second experiment, the background for an illumination gradient was varied. Angle of incidence and cues to the location of the source did predict the trends in lightness judgments but not the magnitude of the effects. An alternative explanation to cue theory is proposed.  相似文献

Plateau's experiment, in which the bisection method was introduced, is recognized as the first psychophysical experiment ever done. That experiment was replicated and extended using modem imaging devices. First, participants with professional training in visual arts painted grayscales with no control on illumination. Then, the trained participants and the nontrained participants generated grayscales using a personal computer in three different conditions: a white background of a linearized monitor, a black background of that monitor, and a white background but without linearizing the monitor. Analyses showed that with artificial illumination, scales with steps more evenly spread were produced than with natural illumination. Humans do not seem to have a natural ability to use the bisection method properly. Experts seem to be able to judge the reflectance of distal stimuli, and perceptual learning played an important role in the perception of achromatic colors as found in prior literature.  相似文献

It is widely acknowledged that a precondition for the perception of the world of objects and events is an early process of organization, and it has generally been assumed that such organization is based on the Gestalt laws of grouping. However, the stage at which such grouping occurs, whether early or late, is an empirical question. It is demonstrated in two experiments that grouping by similarity of neutral color is based not on similarity of absolute luminance at the level of the proximal stimulus, but on phenomenal similarity of lightness resulting from the achievement of lightness constancy. An alternative explanation of such grouping based on the equivalence of luminance ratios between elements and background is ruled out by appropriate control conditions.  相似文献

In van Tuijl's neon configurations, an achromatic line segment on a blue inducer produces yellowish illusory color in the illusory area. This illusion has been explained based on the idea of the complementary color induced by the blue inducer. However, it is proposed here that this illusion can be also explained by introducing the assumption that the visual system unconsciously interprets an achromatic color as information that is constituted by transparent and nontransparent colors. If this explanation is correct, not only this illusion, but also the simultaneous color contrast illusion can be explained without using the idea of the complementary color induction.  相似文献

In 3 experiments the authors used a new contextual bias paradigm to explore how quickly information is extracted from a scene to activate gist, whether color contributes to this activation, and how color contributes, if it does. Participants were shown a brief presentation of a scene followed by the name of a target object. The target object could be consistent or inconsistent with scene gist but was never actually present in the scene. Scene gist activation was operationalized as the degree to which participants respond "yes" to consistent versus inconsistent objects, reflecting a response bias produced by scene gist. Experiment 1 demonstrated that scene gist is activated after a 42-ms exposure and that the strength of the activation increases with longer presentation durations. Experiments 2 and 3 explored the contribution of color to the activation of scene gist. The results revealed that color has an influence across a wide variety of scenes and is directly associated with scene gist.  相似文献

We introduce and explore a color phenomenon which requires the prior perception of motion to produce a spread of color over a region defined by motion. We call this motion-induced spread of colordynamic color spreading. The perception of dynamic color spreading is yoked to the perception of apparent motion: As the ratings of perceived motion increase, the ratings of color spreading increase. The effect is most pronounced if the region defined by motion is near 1° of visual angle. As the luminance  相似文献

Rationalizing the perceptual effects of spectral stimuli has been a major challenge in vision science for at least the last 200 years. Here we review evidence that this otherwise puzzling body of phenomenology is generated by an empirical strategy of perception in which the color an observer sees is entirely determined by the probability distribution of the possible sources of the stimulus. The rationale for this strategy in color vision, as in other visual perceptual domains, is the inherent ambiguity of the real-world origins of any spectral stimulus.  相似文献

When an object looks red to an observer, the visual experience of the observer has two important features. The experience visually represents the object as having a property—being red. And the experience has a phenomenological character; that is, there is something that it is like to have an experience of seeing an object as red. Let qualia be the properties that give our sensory and perceptual experiences their phenomenological character. This essay takes up two related problem for a nonreductive account of qualia. Some have argued that on such an account there is no room in a physicalist ontology for qualia. Section 1 shows how qualia might fit into a physicalist ontology. The second problem begins with the observation that there is a gap in scientific accounts of color experience; there is no explanation of why the features of the brain that determine our color experiences give those experiences their phenomenological character. Building on the results of Sect. 1, Sect. 2 develops an account of color perception that bridges this gap and shows how qualia give color perception its phenomenological character. To get a grip on the issues involved the paper begins by considering some aspects of a physicalist account of color.  相似文献

It was hypothesized that figures of equal area and different shapes are perceived as differing in area and that these apparent differences in area are due to the interaction of certain shape variables. Thirty figures were presented to 45 Ss for paired comparisons. Forty-five sets of 30 Choice scores were calculated. The performance of each S was tested for consistency by the Method of Circular Triads (p>.01). A Coefficient of Agreement (u) indicated that the Ss agreed among themselves (p>.01). Fifteen Ss were tested twice for test-retest reliability (p>.01). The 45 sets of Choice scores were then converted to rank values and averaged over all Ss. The mean rank values of the 30 figures were treated with the two-way analysis of variance by ranks to determine the significance of the differences among them (p>.01). A Coefficient of Concordance (W) was calculated on the 45 sets of rank values to support the results of the analysis of variance (p>.01). Subsequently, the 30 mean rank values were treated as the dependent variable in a multiple correlation (R) with the shape variables as the independent variables (p>.01). The apparent area of the figures was found to vary inversely with perimeter, number of turns, breadth, and external area.  相似文献

When learning basic color vocabulary, young children show a selective delay in the acquisition of brown and gray relative to other basic color terms. In this study, we first establish the robustness of this finding and then investigate the extent to which perception, language, and color preference may influence color conceptualization. Experimental tasks were designed to measure different aspects of perceptual color processing (discrimination and saliency), color preference and objective counts of color term frequency in preschool-directed language (books and mothers' speech) were used to compare the acquisition of three groups of colors: primary colors, secondary colors (orange, pink, and purple) that appear at the same time as the primary colors, and secondary colors (brown and gray) that appear late. Although our results suggest that perception does not directly shape young children's color term acquisition, we found that children prefer brown and gray significantly less than basic colors and that these color terms appear significantly less often in child-directed speech, suggesting that color preference, linguistic input, and developing color cognition may be linked.  相似文献
