In this article, I examine patriotism from psychoanalytic and theological perspectives, arguing that it is a deeply problematic
form of love and devotion. After providing a brief overview of the discourse vis-à-vis patriotism, I depict the characteristics
of a dominant form of patriotism (self-state) in the U.S. Given this, I argue that, while patriotism has a variety of forms,
the most prevalent form tends toward tragic consequences and it is this tragic tendency that I depict from psychoanalytic
and theological perspectives. From a psychoanalytic perspective, the extant form of patriotism in the U.S. represents a self-state
that signifies an idealized, omnipotent, and imaginary identification, which is accompanied by and contingent upon a devaluation
of the Other. Moreover, the dominant form of patriotic self-states is secured by weak dissociation, omnipotent thinking and,
in most cases, a collapse of the symbolic equation. From a Christian theological perspective, patriotism signifies absolutizing
the relative and contingent. This form of idolatry manifests a distortion of reason and will, which contributes to corrupted
and corrupting forms of love and devotion. 相似文献

This article lays the groundwork for a theology of discernment that seeks to address modern anxieties about the integrity of the theological by showing how Christian believers are sanctified for the identification of true speech about God. It does so by arguing that post‐Kantian understandings of the activity of the human subject in judgement need not be seen as inimical to an account of Christian discernment, that recognition of Paul's understanding of the place of discernment in the Christian life points to alternatives to Barth's attempt to resolve the difficulties of the theological through an exclusive appeal to divine activity, and that Augustine develops a helpful account of the place of a theology of discernment in addressing the problem of the theological by treating the connection between these topics as an element within theologies of sanctification and creaturely vocation. 相似文献

When 72 male students in a southern theological institution were compared by the manner in which they intended to fulfill their religious vocation (i.e., as missionaries, pastors, or religious education workers), a homogeneity of personality behavior was observed on each of 16 factors. The total sample, however, was reported to be substantially and significantly different from the general population on four factors. No significant difference was reported among the three groups in their need for social approval as measured by the Marlowe-Crowne SDS. 相似文献

Recent proposals for reading Scripture have increasingly focused on the role of divine agency. Greater attentiveness to the complexity and place of divine agency results in an irruption in the relationship between theological hermeneutics and theological interpretation and a challenge to the dominant way of perceiving their relationship since the rise of modernity. Thus it is increasingly recognized that Scripture is not read like other books. The unique character of theological interpretation necessarily originates in the unique character of the God who speaks the Word of the holy canon of Scripture: the Trinity. Our methodological formulations and hermeneutical understandings of theological interpretation must go beyond the formal acknowledgement of divine causality that remains in these recent proposals to thick confessional and dogmatic reflections on the character of the Trinity and the practices of reading which faithfully reflect that character. 相似文献
