Abstract

Die artikel voer aan dat die eroties-oordadige wat vir George Bataille 'n religieuse aangeleentheid was maar ook setel in die domein van geweld, 'n gepaste teoretiese agtergrond verskaf waarteen Peter Shaffer se Equus (1977) gelees kan word, 'n drama wat onmiddellik opval vanweë die vermenging van die erotiese, passievolle aanbidding en geweldadige vernietiging. Daar sal aangetoon word dat die oordadige, die nuttelose en die oortollige eienskappe is van Bataille se religio-erotiese aangeleentheid waarmee hy deurentyd poog om die dubbele negatief van Hegel te ontkom deur die grense van sinteses te verbreek. Of die grense van sinteses wel suksesvol verbreek word, is dit noodsaaklik om Bataille se begrip van die diskontinue en die kontinue, die profane en die heilige, die orgie en offering te ondersoek. Deur hierdie konsepte toe te pas op Equus kom die karakters Dysart, Frank, en Dora voor as diskontinue wesens van die profane wêreld en Alan as die kontinue wese wat eksessief en geweldadig leef. Mikhail Bakhtin se analise van François Rabelais se wêreld van die populêre Middeleeuse karnaval waar oordaad, feesviering, gelag en omkering van orde prominent figureer, word ter aansluiting gebruik met Bataille se teorie en dien as ondersteuning met die lees van Equus.

Promoting Charitable Behaviour with Compliance Techniques

Pour comparer l'impact de trois techniques d'acquiescement sur l'incitation au comportement charitable, on a demandéà 409 personnes de verser $2 à l'American Cancer Society. Cette requête fut immédiatement présentée dans trois groupes contrôle et précédée dans neuf groupes expérimentaux d'une demande préliminaire correspondant à une procédure d'acquiescement à requête multiple. On a d'abord demandé aux sujets soumis à la technique "pied dans la porte" de répondre à un questionnaire composé 10, 35 ou 60 items. On sollicitait d'abord $10, 25 ou 50 de la part de ceux confrontés à la situation "porte dans la figure"; et $0,50, 1 ou 1,50 de la part des sujets "ras des pâquerettes". Les résultats montrent que les méthodes $10 et 25 "porte dans la figure" furent les plus rentables. Les sujets contrôle et "ras des pâquerettes" donnèrent à peu près la même chose et les conditions "pied dans la porte" furent les moins productives. On discute, à partir de ces découvertes, de la valeur pratique et des inconvénients virtuels de l'application des techniques d'acquiescement à requête multiple pour stimuler le comportement charitable.

Nietzsche neem aan die politieke debat van sy tyd deel deur swaarde met hierdie drie te kruis. Teen die agtergrond hiervan word in hierdie artikel die standpunt verdedig dat Nietzsche se ateïsme 'n totale afwysing van die anti-Semitisme behels—of daardie anti-Semitisme nou in 'n ‘Christelike’ of 'nie-Christelike' gewaad geklee was. In sy Genealogy of morals en Anti-Christ, maak hy gebruik van 'n genealogiese strategie waarmee hy die standpunt dat die anti-Semitisme, die Christendom en die Judaïsme van die priesters 'n familie-verwantskap het, verdedig. Hulle word gekenmerk deur ressentiment, oftewel 'n gemeenskaplike morele verwysingsraamwerk. Sy ateïsme is 'n poging om verby (anderkant) hierdie verwysingsraamwerk te beweeg.

The time-limited influence of sentential context on function word identification

Sentential context effects on the identification of the Dutch function words te (to) and de (the) were examined. In Experiment 1, listeners labeled words on a [t inverted e]-[d inverted e] continuum more often as te when the context waste biased (Ik probeer [? inverted e] schieten [I try to/the shoot]) than when it was de biased (Ik probeer [? inverted e] schoenen [I try to/the shoes]). The effect was weaker in slower responses. In Experiment 2, disambiguation began later, in the second word after [? inverted e]. There was a weak context effect only in the slower responses. In Experiments 3 and 4, disambiguation occurred on the word before [? inverted e]: There was no context effect when one set of sentences was used, but there was an effect (larger in the faster responses) when more sentences were used. Syntactic processing affects word identification only within a limited time frame. It appears to do so not by influencing lexical access processes through feedback but, instead, by biasing decision making.     

Why Metaphors have no Meaning: Considering Metaphoric Meaning in Davidson

Abstract

Since the publication of Donald Davidson’s essay “What Metaphors Mean” (1978) – in which he famously asserts that metaphor has no meaning – the views expressed in it have mostly met with criticism: prominently from Mary Hesse and Max Black. This article attempts to explain Davidson’s surprise-move regarding metaphor by relating it to elements in the rest of his work in semantics, such as the principle of compositionality, radical interpretation and the principle of charity. I conclude that Davidson’s views on metaphor are not only consistent with his semantic theory generally, but that his semantics also depend on these insights. Eventually, the debate regarding Davidson’s views on metaphor should be conducted on the level of his views on the nature of semantics, the relationship between language and the world and the possibility that there is something like conceptual schemes.

Sedert die publikasie van Donald Davidson se opstel What Metaphors Mean (1978) – waarin hy die berugte stelling maak dat metafoor geen betekenis het nie – is sy sieninge meestal begroet met kritiek, ook van prominente figure soos Mary Hesse en Max Black. Hierdie artikel poog om’n verduideliking te vind vir Davidson se verrassende skuif aangaande metafoor, deur sy sieninge hieroor te kontekstualiseer teen die agtergrond van elemente uit die res van sy werk in semantiek, soos die beginsel van komposisionaliteit, radikale interpretasie en die beginsel van rasionele akkomodasie (charity). Ek kom tot die gevolgtrekking dat Davidson se sieninge aangaande metafoor nie slegs naatloos aansluit by sy algemene sieninge aangaande semantiek nie, maar dat die res van sy semantiese teorie ook athang van sy sieninge aangaande metafoor. Uiteindelik behoort die debat rakende Davidson se sieninge aangaande metafoor gevoer te word op die vlak van die aard van semantiek, die verhouding tussen taal en die werldikheid en die moontlike bestaan van konseptuele skemas.

Here the practical meets the abstract, as Supreme Court justices must, explicitly or not, adopt some philosophical viewpoint in deciding how general constitutional propositions do, or do not, decide current concress te controversies.     

Love and violence: gender paradoxes in volatile attachments

This article presents a multidimensional, theoretical model for the understanding of relationships in which men are violent toward women. It argues that abusive relationships exemplify, in extremis, the stereotypical gender arrangements that structure intimacy between men and women generally. Moreover, it proposes that paradoxical gender injunctions create insoluble relationship dilemmas that can explode in violence. A multifaceted approach to treatment, which incorporates feminist and systemic ideas and techniques, is described.     

中小学教师的职业压力源研究

以北京市5255名中小学教师为被试,研究考察了中小学教师职业压力源的表现特点。结果发现:(1)中小学教师职业压力源的五个因素,即工作负荷、学生学业、社会及学校评价、专业发展及学生问题所带来的压力,能够较好地解释教师职业压力源问卷的结构效度。(2)随着教龄的增加,教师面临的各种压力表现出增加的趋势,11～15年教龄段的教师感知到最大的压力,之后逐渐减少。(3)小学教师感受到的各项压力明显高于中学教师。学生问题如安全、行为问题是小学教师主要的压力源,而中学教师的压力更多来源于学生学业,特别是考试压力。     

Exact and approximate analytical solutions of Weiss equation of ferromagnetism and their experimental relevance

The recent progress in the theory of generalised Lambert functions makes possible to solve exactly the Weiss equation of ferromagnetism. However, this solution is quite inconvenient for practical purposes. Precise approximate analytical solutions are obtained, giving the temperature dependence of the spontaneous magnetization, and also the dependence of the magnetization on both temperature and external magnetic field. The experimental relevance of these results, mainly for the determination of the Curie temperature, is discussed.     

HRM Practices in a Process of Organisational Change: A Contextualist Perspective

Cet article explore les interactions entre politiques de GRH et facteurs de contexte dans un processus de changement organisationnel. Nous présentons d'abord une typologie de modèles de GRH, dans la lignée des écrits de Mintzberg sur les configurations organisationnelles. Nous développons ensuite une vision contingente des questions de GRH—mettant en évidence l'influence de certains facteurs de contexte, suivie d'une vision plus politique qui reflète les jeux de pouvoir entre les différents protagonistes, mobilisant chacun des éléments spécifiques du contexte. Enfin, nous offrons une appréhension plus concrète du cadre d'analyse contextualiste en en discutant l'application à une étude de cas dans le secteur agro-alimentaire.
This paper explores the interactions between HRM practices and contextual factors in a process of organisational change. We first present a typology of HRM models, in line with Mintzberg's organisational configurations. We then develop a contingent view on HRM issues—highlighting the influence of some contextual factors—followed by a more political view which reveals the power games between the different stakeholders, each of them enacting specific contextual factors. Finally, we give a more concrete understanding of the contextualist framework discussing its application to a case study in the alimentary sector.
