Using the article by von Eye and colleagues as a springboard, this commentary considers a variety of challenges to valid exploration
of mediation processes. Along the way, a several alternatives for reinserting the individual back into mediation processes
are entertained. The configural frequency approach to mediation analyses proposed by von Eye et al. (Integrative Psychological
& Behavioral Science 43(3), 2009) represents a major step toward this objective. Idiographic approaches are proposed as the next step in the progression toward
individual-centered mediation analyses.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the sociocultural dynamics underlying collaborative research. The article is based on
an international collaborative project on the everyday lives of working families in Italy, Sweden and the USA. The aim of
this paper is to show that collaborative research does not necessarily produce collaboration: this is possible only with very
strong rules between partners. It proposes a distinction between collaboration and cooperation, and uses this distinction
to examine intergroup and intragroup joint activity. Through the analysis of the communicative exchanges occurring between
researchers, the paper highlights conditions in which cooperation can become fruitful collaboration.

Recent social theory has departed from methodological individualism’s explanation of action according to the motives and dispositions
of human individuals in favor of explanation in terms of broader agencies consisting of both human and nonhuman elements described
as cyborgs, actor-networks, extended agencies, or distributed cognition. This paper proposes that moral responsibility for
action also be vested in extended agencies. It advances a consequentialist view of responsibility that takes moral responsibility
to be a species of causal responsibility, and it answers objections that might be raised on the basis of intentions and deserts.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an empirically validated treatment for a number of psychiatric disorders. Like all psychotherapies,
IPT can be described by its theoretical foundations and its primary targets, tactics, and techniques. The need for continued
creativity in IPT and other treatments is reviewed, and several specific proposals for change in IPT based on clinical observations
and theoretical considerations are discussed. A paradigm for collaboration between academic research and clinical observation
required for continued creativity is offered. Change is inevitable, and the empirically validated therapies such as IPT will
be even more effective as they incorporate and test new and creative elements.

Relatively little is known about the factor structure of disruptive behavior among preadolescent girls. The present study
reports on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of disruptive girl behavior over four successive data waves as rated
by parents and teachers in a large, representative community sample of girls (N = 2,451). Five factors were identified from parent ratings (oppositional behavior/conduct problems, inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity,
relational aggression, and callous-unemotional behaviors), and four factors were identified derived from teacher ratings (oppositional
behavior/conduct problems/callous-unemotional behaviors, inattention, hyperactivityimpulsivity, and relational aggression).
There was a high degree of consistency of items loading on equivalent factors across parent and teacher ratings. Year-to-year
stability of factors between ages five and 12 was high for parent ratings (ICC = 0.70 to 0.88), and slightly lower for teacher
ratings (ICC = 0.56 to 0.83). These findings are discussed in terms of possible adjustment to the criteria for children's
disruptive behavior disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.

In this paper I draw on Piaget and Habermas to underline the importance of the theoretical distinction between social relations of constraint and social relations of cooperation for reflecting upon inter-institutional projects. I argue that the socio-cultural approach to collaboration has some important
limitations that restrict ideological critic and emancipatory research. The limitations of this approach can be located in
its epistemological assumptions, a homogenized notion of culture and a weakness in articulating the intrapersonal, inter-personal,
inter-group/positional and social representational/ideological levels of analysis. As an empirical example of this I discuss
the Sloan centres for family research.

The present study investigated underlying processes of the effect of maltreatment on psychopathology (i.e., internalizing
and externalizing problems) in a group of 111 maltreated and 110 nonmaltreated 7–10 year-old children (60% boys). We tested
the moderating and/or mediating roles of emotion regulation and the mother-child relationship quality (pattern of relatedness)
using Structural Equation Modeling. Emotion regulation, but not the pattern of relatedness, mediated the relation between
maltreatment and psychopathology. This mediation was moderated by the pattern of relatedness: For the group of children with
an insecure pattern of relatedness, maltreatment was related to lower levels of emotion regulation, which was predictive of
higher levels of internalizing and externalizing symptomatology. In contrast, for the secure relatedness group, there was
no mediation by emotion regulation since the impact of maltreatment on emotion regulation was not significant. Implications
of the mediating role of emotion regulation and the buffering role of the mother-child relationship quality were discussed.

In this paper we discuss visualizations in mathematics from a historical and didactical perspective. We consider historical
debates from the 17th and 19th centuries regarding the role of intuition and visualizations in mathematics. We also consider
the problem of what a visualization in mathematical learning can achieve. In an empirical study we investigate what mathematical
conclusions university students made on the basis of a visualization. We emphasize that a visualization in mathematics should
always be considered in its proper context.

Phenomenology of the body and the third generation of cognitive science, both of which attribute a central role in human cognition
to the body rather than to the Cartesian notion of representation, face the criticism that higher-level cognition cannot be
fully grasped by those studies. The problem here is how explicit representations, consciousness, and thoughts issue from perception
and the body, and how they cooperate in human cognition. In order to address this problem, we propose a research program,
a cognitive phenomenology of the body, which is basically motivated by the perspective of Merleau-Ponty. We find a substantial clue in developmental psychological
studies on the body and language.

The aim of this paper is to defend the causal efficacy of consciousness against two specters of epiphenomenalism. We argue
that these challenges are best met, on the one hand, by rejecting all forms of consciousness-body dualism, and on the other,
by adopting a dynamical systems approach to understanding the causal efficacy of conscious experience. We argue that this
non-reductive identity theory provides the theoretical resources for reconciling the reality and efficacy of consciousness
with the neurophysiology of the brain and body.

The purpose of this study was to assess the mediating effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between identity styles
and academic achievement. Four-hundred high school students (200 male, 200 female) who were selected through cluster random
sampling, completed the Revised Identity Styles Inventory (ISI, 6G) and Morgan-Jink Student Efficacy Scales (MJSES). Path
analysis was used to analyze the data. In general, the results indicated that informational identity style had a positive
direct impact on academic achievement, while diffuse/avoidance identity style had a negative effect on academic achievement.
Data also suggested that informational and normative identity style had a positive influence on academic achievement through
the mediation of academic self-efficacy.

The relationships of voluntary retirement and organizational turnover intentions to various commitment constructs in work
and non-work settings were examined using a sample of 345 employees near retirement age (mean age = 53.71). The results demonstrated
that work centrality and commitment to leisure activities were unique predictors of retirement intentions, while affective
organizational commitment predicted turnover intentions but not retirement. Occupational commitment was a significant predictor
of both retirement and turnover. The implications for revising the definition of work-role attachment theory and further developing
a theoretical model to explain retirement decisions are also discussed.

We conducted this study to determine the relationship between math preference and mastery for five middle school students
with autism spectrum disorders. We randomly presented several math addition and subtraction problem formats to determine the
students’ preferences. Results indicated that preference was idiosyncratic across students. In addition, preference was not
related to mastery in some students. Results are discussed within a theoretical framework of matching law. Implications for
practitioners are discussed.

This article analyzes the moral relevance of technological artifacts and its possible role in ethical theory, by taking the
postphenomenological approach that has developed around the work of Don Ihde into the domain of ethics. By elaborating a postphenomenological
analysis of the mediating role of ultrasound in moral decisions about abortion, the article argues that technologies embody
morality and help to constitute moral subjectivity. This technological mediation of the moral subject is subsequently addressed
in terms of Michel Foucault’s ethical position, in which ethics is about actively co-shaping one’s moral subjectivity. Integrating
Foucauldian ethics and postphenomenology, the article argues that the technological mediation of moral subjectivity should
be at the heart of an ethical approach that takes the moral dimensions of technology seriously.
