Relationship Conflict and Restoration Model: A Preliminary Exploration of Concepts and Therapeutic Utility

The article examines preliminary results of the reconciliation cycle presented as part of the Relationship Conflict and Restoration Model (RCRM). This model is an integration of attachment theory, contextual family therapy, and narrative approaches. The model was implemented in a workshop format with 5 couples. Implications from this workshop are presented regarding the relationship between the primary constructs of the reconciliation cycle. Initial impressions indicate that the constructs of justice, empathy, trust, forgiveness, and grace are related to a couple’s overall experience of intimacy, offering support for the model. Implications of the RCRM are discussed.     

Career Development and Public Policy

The rationale for policy interest in career development services and the way in which this rationale is being strengthened by the current transformations in work and career are discussed. The potential roles of public policy in relation to career development services are explored, along with ways in which such services can influence the policy‐making process. A range of policy issues related to making career development services available to all throughout life are identified. Stronger structures and processes are needed to bring together career development practitioners with policy makers and other stakeholder interests in order to address tasks of common concern.     

Client Conceptions of Change in Career Development and Career Counseling

This article illustrates the ways in which clients in career counseling think about the types of change in their career lives and about the determinants of change. It is based on an analysis of the interview data of a few adult clients. Two category systems are proposed as representative of the clients' thinking about change in these domains.     

Constructive Development and Career Transition: Implications for Counseling

The ability to effectively manage career transition may be related to an individual's meaning-making framework, or constructive development. The implications of constructive developmental theory for career choice and implementation are explored. The interplay between career transition and developmental transformation is examined, and counseling strategies for assisting such transformation are proposed. Case illustrations are offered.     

Fringe Focus: Informal Economy and Green Career Development

What are now regarded as peripheral career development activities will move to the center of career counseling: Counseling in the informal economy and environmentally concerned career counseling will move up the agenda as traditional concepts of careers fade away. Fringe will become focus.     

Fantasy in Career Development

Fantasy activity has long been recognized as a normal psychological process that individuals use to deal with emotions, goals, and beliefs. Recent developments in this area have led some counselors to employ fantasy as a technique in the counseling relationship. This article explores the development of fantasy activity as a part of career development, reviews relevant research, and cites examples of the use and implementation of fantasy.

Counseling Rejected Applicants: Feedback for Career Development

In this article the author points out the need for more adequate counseling with an often neglected segment of the population: rejected applicants to higher education. He delineates the roles, functions, and problems of the counselor in this situation, using as an example current procedures for counseling rejected applicants in the Yale Physician's Associate Program. The article contains recommendations for counselors, so that they might become more familiar with the problems and functions of admissions committees, and for admissions committees, so that they might enlist the aid of those with counseling training in both the admissions process and the counseling of rejected applicants.

Development of Numberline and Measurement Concepts

In a two-part study, children in Grades 1 through 3 were given a set of numberline estimation problems and a set of similar numberline estimation problems that were to be solved using specially designed rulers. The estimation tasks showed a complex pattern of change in accuracy and strategies over the three grade levels. This pattern indicated that children progressively altered their estimation strategies from strictly sequential ones to ones that incorporate elements of proportional reasoning. This shift was gradual and implemented school-learned numerical relationships in the solution of these novel tasks. There was no indication that, in the Piagetian sense, stage changes contributed to strategy development. However, the use of rulers with different spacings between the numbers indicated that children's acquisition of a principled concept of equal intervals required both the learned convention of equal intervals and the achievement of conservation of length.
