A procedure is described for simple conversion of a printing calculator to an inexpensive printing counter. The unit is particularly useful for unattended data collection. A timing circuit controls printout of accumulated data at specified time intervals.

An inexpensive pure-tone pattern generator

A low-cost sound pattern generator that is remotely programmable has been developed to produce pure-tone auditory patterns. The device, which is compatible with relay programming equipment, can generate either of two auditory patterns in the sequence ABA or BAB. The generator features an independently settable range of ON and OFF durations (0.1 to 1.0 sec) for pure-tone bursts and a selectable range (0.2 to 2.0 sec) of intercycle intervals. The inexpensive construction cost coupled with the flexibility of the timing characteristics of the generator should make it of interest to a wide variety of auditory researchers.     

An inexpensive microcomputer-based image digitizer

An inexpensive (under $600) microcomputer-controlled image analysis system that uses commercially available components is described. Both programming and construction details are provided, as well as a discussion of the utility of the apparatus in studies of animal behavior. The system has been used to record position preferences and activity in animal groupings of various size. Simply by changing the distance between the target and the camera, animals and/or arenas of differing size can be monitored.     

An artificial intelligent counter

This article, using a counter as an example, explores a novel approach in constructing a cognitive system. The system is a paired memory system of “left and right brain” consisting of a number of memory units. The “left brain” is dedicated to the cognitive process of symbols, and the “right brain” to the representation of the symbols. The left and right subsystems are connected by bundles of internal communication signals. The paired memory system can learn facts and generalize concepts. Its cognitive capability is realized through the communication among these memory units at different cognitive levels within the system. The key claims in this paper are supported by empirical findings and theoretical principles. An AI counter is built and demonstrated in terms of concept learning and responding.
