A curved target can be found efficiently among straight distractors in a visual search task. This could reflect the status of curvature as a basic feature for visual search. Alternatively, curvature could be detected as a locus of high variation in orientation. In a series of experiments it is shown that efficient search for curvature is possible even if local variation in orientation is eliminated as a cue. This suggests that curvature is part of the set of basic features for visual search and that this set is derived relatively late in the course of visual processing.  相似文献

Abstract

Behavioral studies consistently find that subjects move their hand along straight paths despite considerations that suggest reaches should be curved. Literature on this topic makes it clear that the experimentally displayed feedback influences how subjects reach. Could the standard visual feedback, a displayed cursor, explain the lack of path curvature in experimental results? To address this question, we conducted three experiments to examine reach behavior in the absence of the standard visual feedback. In the first experiment, we found significant increases in curvature as visual feedback was progressively extinguished across groups. A second experiment revealed that practiced reaches became curved after the standard visual feedback was removed. A final experiment found that subjects’ reaches made before and after a brief display of visual feedback were similar, indicating a preference for specific curved trajectories. Our results suggest that the consistently straight reaches often observed could be due to a bias to move the displayed cursor straight, which when removed reveal subject-specific preferences for reaches that are often curved.  相似文献

When a shape is alternately presented in two positions differing in both location and orientation, apparent motion tends to be experienced over a curved path. The curvature provides evidence about principles of object motion that may have been internalized in the perceptual system. This study introduces a technique for estimating deviation from a straight path. A shape was alternately presented on the two sides of a visual partition with a "window" just wide enough to accommodate the shape. Observers adjusted the location of the window to maximize the illusion of smooth passage of the shape through the window. In accordance with theoretical expectations, estimated deviations from rectilinear motion increased with the separation between the stimuli in spatial location, angular orientation, and time.  相似文献

Masking, aftereffect, and illusion paradigms were used to establish the spatial selectivity of curvature detectors in human vision. Arcs with the same chord orientation mask each other maximally when they are identical in radius and direction of curvature. There is gradual reduction in masking over an extensive spatial range as arcs diverge in curvature. The transition from convexity to concavity does not produce discontinuity in the masking function. The extent to which a straight line appears curved also depends on the curvature of arcs shown previously (aftereffect) or at the same time (illusion). It is suggested that these effects could occur through selective adaptation of detectors responsive to either global curvature or the orientation of local straight-line approximations within an arc. Evidence is reviewed in support of the latter interpretation.  相似文献

A series of experiments was carried out to examine the effect of curvature on haptic judgments of extent in sighted and blind individuals. Experiment 1 showed that diameters connecting the endpoints of semicircular lines were underestimated with respect to straight lines, but failed to show an effect of visual experience on length judgments. In experiment 2 we tested are lengths. The effects of curvature on perceived path length were weaker, but were still present in this experiment. Visual experience had no effect on path length judgments. Another experiment was performed to examine the effect of repeated tracing (1, 5, 9, or unlimited number of traces) on judgments of the lengths of straight lines and diameters of semicircles. Judgments of extent were more accurate when subjects engaged in larger numbers of traces. There was no effect of number of traces on curve-height judgments, suggesting that subjects were not using height estimates to judge diameters of semicircles. In a further experiment we tested the effect of number of traces on curves that varied in height. Restricting subjects to a single trace magnified the effect of path length on judgments of the distance between the endpoints of curves. Additional experiments showed that curvature effects on diameter judgments were not eliminated when stimuli were in the frontal plane or when the curves were explored with the use of two hands. Arm support had no effect on judged length in experiment 7. A final experiment showed a robust horizontal vertical illusion in haptic perception of convex curves, with overestimation of the heights of the curves compared with their widths. The practical and theoretical implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

The Bourdon illusion in haptic space   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A strong Bourdon illusion-the apparent bentness of a straight edge-in the active haptic mode was established in two experiments. Blindfolded subjects clasped the opposite surfaces of an object with the same frontal profile as the visual figure between thumb and forefinger and moved the latter together from end to end across the object. When the two triangular components of the objects were rotated through 180 degrees so that their bases instead of their apexes were contiguous, the illusion was reversed in direction and reduced by about half, as with the visual illusion. It was concluded that the active haptic Bourdon illusion is basically the same as the visual illusion and can be accounted for by a compromise in perception between the orientation of the test surface and that of the object of which it is an integral part.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the role of edge lines in curve driving we examined steering behaviour in the face of unexpected gradual changes in road geometry. Experienced drivers (N = 13) operating a fixed-base driving simulator steered a car along a single-lane (3.80 m or 7.60 m wide) winding road. The experimental track consisted of eight 90° curves with radii of curvature varying between 75 m and 500 m, separated by 500-m long straight line segments. The model-based nature of the simulator was used to create unexpected online changes in road geometry, implemented through a gradual displacement of one or both edge lines while drivers steered around the delineated bend. Although they regulated their speed as a function of road curvature, drivers were found to consistently cut into and out of the curves. When the edge lines did not move, drivers stabilized their lane position during the 20°–70° curve segments, adopting a position closer to the interior edge line for the narrower lane width and smaller radii of curvature. Motion of the interior edge line, whether inward or outward, gave rise to systematic changes in lane position, while motion of the exterior edge line did not affect driving behaviour. Overall, the results point to a visuo-motor strategy of steering based on zeroing-out changes in the rate of change of angular bearing of the tangent point.  相似文献

If a curved line and a straight line are presented briefly, one above the other, in sequence to the eye, then, under appropriate conditions, visual apparent motion is obtained. Subjects report that the illusory figure moving and changing from the curved line to the straight line appears to overshoot the latter, gaining a small curvature in the opposite sense. Three experiments are described. In the first, the magnitude of this apparent curvature was quantified as a function of the delay between the onsets of the curved line and straight line (the stimulus onset asynchrony, SOA). It is shown that overshoot in curvature cannot be attributed to inappropriate patterns of eye fixations. In the second experiment, the stimulus configuration was modified to reveal the contribution to apparent curvature of classical curvature-contrast effects. Curvature overshoot due to apparent motion alone was thus estimated as a function of SOA. In the third experiment, an analogous position overshoot was measured for apparent motion elicited by two brief sequentially presented parallel line segments. It is argued that a combination of such position overshoots cannot explain curvature overshoot. Two schemes of a more general kind that might be used to interpret curvature overshoot are then outlined. One scheme is based on a neural-net model of apparent motion, and the other on a functional model of apparent motion that operates by laws analogous to those governing real physical motion.  相似文献

Five experiments which attempted to evaluate the relationship between orientation and curvature selectivity in human vision are described. In the first two experiments, threshold elevation for curved gratings was measured after exposure to similar gratings, with the use of either an adaptation (experiment 1) or a masking (experiment 2) paradigm. In both experiments threshold elevation occurred which was selective for both the degree and the direction of curvature of the adapting pattern. Experiment 3 compared the effects of adapting to tilted rectilinear or vertical curved gratings upon threshold for a vertical rectilinear grating. Threshold elevation declined systematically as the adapting gratings were either tilted or made more curved. Experiment 4 measured curvature selectivity as a function of the orientation of a curved adapting grating. Threshold elevation declined as the adapting grating was tilted more, but curvature selectivity remained. Experiment 5 measured the orientation tuning for curved gratings directly. Threshold elevation declined to 50% of its maximum value at an adpating orientation of about 28 degrees. This was constant for all values of curvature used. The resulsts are discussed with reference to the question of whether the human visual system contains 'curvature detectors' or linear-contour detectors which respond to the tangents of curves.  相似文献

We investigated the extent to which the human visual system can detect discontinuities in firstorder optical flow fields. We constructed two types of spatial discontinuities: a circular split field with a straight edge and a disk with annular surround. We used two different first-order optical flow components: an expansion and a rotation. We found an intriguing difference in the detection thresholds for straight and circular discontinuities. Whereas straight discontinuities yielded thresholds of 10%— 50% difference in expansion or rotation, circular discontinuities could, at first, only be detected at extreme differences (>>100%). After a learning period, thresholds for such stimuli decreased, but they remained significantly higher than thresholds for the straight edge. Thresholds rose for stimuli that formed a gradual transition between a circular and a straight edge, and they decreased with increasing eccentricity of the circular discontinuity. Results suggest that symmetry in the stimulus, defined by the coincidence of the center of expansion or rotation and the center of the circular discontinuity, was responsible for the difference in thresholds for circular and straight discontinuities.  相似文献

In this study, we examined the contribution of the orientation of moving objects to perception of a streaming/bouncing motion display. In three experiments, participants reported which of the two types of motion, streaming or bouncing, they perceived. The following independent variables were used: orientation differences between Gabor micropatterns (Gabors) and their path of motion (all the experiments) and the presence/absence of a transient tone (Experiment 1), transient visual flash (Experiment 2), or concurrent secondary task (Experiment 3) at the coincidence of Gabors. The results showed that the events at coincidence generally biased responses toward the perception of bouncing. On the other hand, alignment of Gabors with their motion axes significantly reduced the frequency of bounce perception. The results also indicated that an object whose orientation was parallel to its motion path strengthened the spatiotemporal integration of local motion signals along a straight motion path, resulting in the perception of streaming. We suggest that the effect of collinearity between Gabors and their motion path is relatively free from the effect of attention distraction.  相似文献

We perceive structure through a process of perceptual organization. Here we report a new perceptual organization phenomenon-the facilitation of visual grouping by global curvature. Observers viewed patterns that they perceived as organized into collections of curves. The patterns were perceptually ambiguous such that the perceived orientation of the patterns varied from trial to trial. When patterns were sufficiently dense and proximity was equated for the predominant perceptual alternatives, observers tended to perceive the organization with the greatest curvature. This effect is tantamount to visual grouping by maximal curvature and thus demonstrates an unprecedented effect of global structure on perceptual organization. We account for this result with a model that predicts the perceived organization of a pattern as function of its nonaccidentality, which we define as the probability that it could have occurred by chance. Our findings demonstrate a novel relationship between the geometry of a pattern and the visual salience of global structure.  相似文献

When trying to move in a straight line to a target, participants produce movement paths that are slightly (but systematically) curved. Is this because perceived space is curved, or because the direction to the target is systematically misjudged? We used a simple model to investigate whether continuous use of an incorrect judgement of the direction to the target could explain the curvature. The model predicted the asymmetries that were found experimentally when moving across a background of radiating lines (the Hering illusion). The magnitude of the curvature in participants' movements was correlated with their sensitivity to the illusion when judging a moving dot's path, but not with their sensitivity when judging the straightness of a line. We conclude that a misjudgement of direction causes participants to perceive a straight path of a moving dot as curved and to produce curved movement paths.  相似文献

The relations among implicit and explicit measures of sexual orientation attitudes and sexual-orientation-related behavior and beliefs among gay men (Study 1) and straight men (Studies 1 and 2) were explored. Study 1 found relations between implicit and explicit measures of sexual orientation attitudes, large differences between gay and straight men on both implicit and explicit measures, and that these measures predicted sexual-orientation-related behaviors among gay men. Also, only straight men exhibited a negative relation between their attitudes toward homosexuality and heterosexuality. Study 2 found that as straight men held more negative attitudes toward homosexuality, they more strongly endorsed the importance of heterosexual identity and of traditional masculine gender roles. These endorsements mediated the negative relation between their attitudes toward heterosexuality and homosexuality. Implications for assessing attitudes toward sexual orientation and their relations for sexual orientation identity are discussed.  相似文献

In the figural after-effect one part of the visual field is apparently expanded relative to the rest, and it is suggested that the expansion might correspond to an improvement in discrimination. An experiment, in which subjects were required to judge the direction of curvature of lines after fixation of a straight line, showed no such improvement.  相似文献

Five experiments systematically investigated whether orientation is a visual object property that affords action. The primary aim was to establish the existence of a pure physical affordance (PPA) of object orientation, independent of any semantic object-action associations or visually salient areas towards which visual attention might be biased. Taken together, the data from these experiments suggest that firstly PPAs of object orientation do exist, and secondly, the behavioural effects that reveal them are larger and more robust when the object appears to be graspable, and is oriented in depth (rather than just frontally) such that its leading edge appears to point outwards in space towards a particular hand of the viewer.  相似文献

Geometric and neural models of illusory-contour (IC) synthesis currently use only local contour geometry to derive the shape of ICs. Work on the visual representation of shape, by contrast, points to the importance of both contour and surface geometry. We investigated the influence of surface-based geometric factors on IC shape. The local geometry of inducing-contour pairs was equated in stereoscopic IC displays, and the shape of the enclosed surface was varied by manipulating sign of curvature, cross-axial shape width, and medial-axis geometry. IC shapes were measured using a parametric shape-adjustment task (Experiment 1) and a dot-adjustment task (Experiment 2). Both methods revealed large influences of surface geometry. ICs enclosing locally concave regions were perceived to be systematically more angular than those enclosing locally convex regions. Importantly, the influence of sign of curvature was modulated significantly by shape width and medial-axis geometry: IC shape difference between convex and concave inducers was greater for narrow shapes than wider ones, and greater for shapes with straight axis and symmetric contours (diamond versus bowtie), than those with curved axis and parallel contours (bent tubes). Even at the level of illusory "contours," there is a contribution of region-based geometry which is sensitive to nonlocal shape properties involving medial geometry and part decomposition. Models of IC synthesis must incorporate the role of nonlocal region-based geometric factors in a way that parallels their role in organizing visual shape representation more generally.
