Using the classical clinico-anatomical correlation method of the French clinical school, Paul Broca confirmed the localization of "language" in the frontal lobe. He actually discovered the lateralization of language in the left hemisphere. These contributions eventually led to the demise of the older concept of the "sensorium commune," because Broca's ideas implied the presence of motor functions in the hemispheres. Although Broca worked within the theoretical motif of the "faculty" psychology, the reflex-oriented "associationist" psychology soon became the predominant theoretical framework of localization, because it accommodated the motor aspect of hemispheric function. Since Broca's time, the study of the biology of language has proceeded along two parallel but sometimes separate lines in the experimental and clinical traditions. 相似文献

Before methods for drawing accurately in perspective were developed in the 15th century, many artists drew with divergent perspective. But we found that many university students draw with divergent perspective rather than with the correct convergent perspective. These experiments were designed to reveal why people tend to draw with divergent perspective. University students drew a cube and isolated edges and surfaces of a cube. Their drawings were very inaccurate. About half the students drew with divergent perspective like artists before the 15th century. Students selected a cube from a set of tapered boxes with great accuracy and were reasonably accurate in selecting the correct drawing of a cube from a set of tapered drawings. Each subject's drawing was much worse than the drawing selected as accurate. An analysis of errors in drawings of a cube and of isolated edges and surfaces of a cube revealed several factors that predispose people to draw in divergent perspective. The way these factors intrude depends on the order in which the edges of the cube are drawn. 相似文献

The concept of the selfobject was central to Heinz Kohut's psychology of the self. With an eye to studying the development of narcissism and its implications for the growth of new psychic structure, this concept is reviewed and reassessed. Post-Kohutian complexities regarding its definition and use extend our consideration of the development of narcissism beyond archaic configurations toward further evolution of the self and the nature of mature narcissism. The hypothesis is offered that developing narcissism and the growth of self-regulation impact the acquisition of new structure and new capacities through the emergence of newly potentiated aspects of the self. The implications of these emergent qualities of the self are examined in the context of our understanding of self-esteem regulation, the state of the self, and the goals of psychoanalysis. A clinical example illustrates how technique and process in an analysis may be organized around the development of such new capacities. 相似文献

A fundamental observation regarding the Dark Triad traits (i.e., narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism) is that they are all associated with limited empathy. However, little is known about these relationships beyond some basics. In this study (N = 352), we asked three questions. What is the nature of the relationship between the Dark Triad traits and empathy? Does limited empathy account for sex differences in the Dark Triad? Are men and women low on empathy through different personality traits? The Dark Triad traits were all related to low levels of empathy even when controlling for the shared variance among the traits. Empathy rates mediated sex differences in different aspects of the Dark Triad but not others. Low empathy rates were related to narcissism in women but psychopathy in men, suggesting different routes to limited empathy for men and women high on the Dark Triad. 相似文献

Why do people dislike art that they find meaningless? According to terror management theory, maintaining a basic meaningful view of reality is a key prerequisite for managing concerns about mortality. Therefore, mortality salience should decrease liking for apparently meaningless art, particularly among those predisposed to unambiguous knowledge. Accordingly, mortality salience diminished affection for modern art in Study 1, and this effect was shown in Study 2 to be specific to individuals with a high personal need for structure (PNS). In Studies 3 and 4, mortality salient high-PNS participants disliked modern art unless it was imbued with meaning, either by means of a title or a personal frame of reference induction. We compare over a two-octave range the tonal, interval, and scale relationships of an ancient Chinese bell ensemble of the Zhou Dynasty and a modern bamboo flute. By using subjective pitches, a tonal system with simple harmonic partials (the flute) could be compared with a tonal system with complex inharmonic partials (the bell). We argue that the underlying musical scales of the bell ensemble and the flute are closely related and lie between an unequal-interval pure-system scale and the just-intonation scale. There is some evidence that a least interval of 60 or 66 cents figures in the flute scale, that both flute and bell scales include a 90-cent interval and a true (1,200-cent) octave, and that neither scale includes a 100-cent interval. Since there is a true octave, the scales cannot be cycles of fifths, and since there is no equal-temperament half-tone (100 cents), the scales cannot be equal in temperament. We conclude that the flute and Zhou bell scales are very similar if not the same. Apparently, strong cultural traditions and human perceptual constancies united to sustain a common flexible musical scale during 2,400 years. 相似文献

This essay represents part of an effort to rewrite the history metaphysics in terms of what philosophy never said, nor could
say. It works from the Neoplatonic commentary tradition on Plato’s Parmenides as the matrix for a distinctively apophatic thinking that takes the truth of metaphysical doctrines as something other than
anything that can be logically articulated. It focuses on Damascius in the 5–6th century AD as the culmination of this tradition
in the ancient world and emphasizes that Neoplatonism represents the crisis of Greek metaphysics on account of the inability
to give a rational account of foundations for knowing and of the ultimate principle of beings. Neoplatonism discovered how
all such ultimate principles were necessarily beyond the reach of reason and speech. This apophatic insight is drawn out with
the help of contemporary criticism of Neoplatonic philosophy, defining also some points of divergence. The essay then discusses
the motives for thinking the unsayable in postmodern times on the basis of this parallel with Neoplatonic thought. Discourse’s
becoming critical of itself to the point of self-subversion animates them both. However, the tendency in postmodern thought
to totally reject theology, including negative theology, is a betrayal of its own deepest motivations. This tendency is debated
through an examination of the thought of Jean-Luc Nancy. While any traditional discourse can be negated, the negating and
self-negating capacity of discourse itself is infinite, and this is where a perennial negative theological philosophy of the
unsayable is to be located. Language, eminently the language of philosophy, as infinitely open, points in a direction which

The capacity of the infant to bear affect relies on the capacity of the caregiver until it has achieved enough strength to perform this task itself. In the case of neglect the necessary strength to contain, metabolize and think about affect so that it may be converted into differentiated feelings cannot develop because of the absence of a caregiver capable of sustaining the infant in its emotional development. Instead a system of defence against affect arises in which the affect itself is perceived as intrusive and abusive. Because of neglect a confusion between abuse and affect is to be observed, with catastrophic consequences for the growing up child. Furthermore neglected children can be seduced by external abuse in the hope of being protected from affect that threatens to feel abusive from within. Paradoxically these children are drawn toward abusive situations in the hope of finding some ongoing shelter from unmanageable affect. A corollary of this is that actual containment comes to feel abusive to them: if they are made to feel affect, they perceive the other, who put them in touch with affect, as abusive: thus affect, abuse and containment are confused.
