Studies of perceptual awareness require sensitive measures reflecting subjective judgments of visibility. Two scales have been proposed for this purpose: the Continuous Scale (CS) and the Perceptual Awareness Scale (PAS). Here we compare the scales in the context of the Gabor patch orientation discrimination task and propose a Continuous Perceptual Awareness Scale (C-PAS) that aims to combine their advantages. The results of the study shown no differences in sensitivity between the scales. However, we observed differences between the scales in awareness ratings frequencies and accuracy associated with the lowest ratings. We concluded that visibility ratings are often biased, and thus, the scale sensitivity may not be optimal. Furthermore, based on the additional analyses, we argued that there is an advantage of using C-PAS over CS. The scale allows to use an additional variability of judgment within PAS categories and thus it may enable more fine-grained measurement of visibility at near-threshold conditions.  相似文献

The pluralizing forces in many English speaking countries include a number of Muslim communities. As these become integrated into their host societies, their social and spiritual values, and above all a recognition of the Qur'an as their sacred Book have the potential to enrich the mythic and symbolic resources of English as a language of literature. For this, the Qur'an needs to establish recognition in the first place at a secular level as literature in order to pave the way for an awareness of its spiritual dimensions. This essay outlines some of the obstacles to such a development, and suggests ways in which they may be overcome. It shows how the Qur'an re‐presents in a distinctive way themes and motifs familiar to English readers of the Bible. It offers English renderings of a number of qur'anic pericopes. It attempts by use of a number of techniques to present them in a way that communicates something of the genius of the Qur'an as literature, and thereby to offer a basis on which non‐Muslims can share with Muslims its distinctive contribution to the spiritual heritage of humankind.  相似文献

This project revisits the perennial debate over the relationship between job performance and turnover. Disputing traditional findings, C. Trevor, B. Gerhart, and J. Boudreau (1997) observed that high and low performers quit more than do average performers. They further challenged received wisdom by showing that promotions can induce turnover, especially among poor performers, by signaling ability. The authors sought to replicate and extend these unconventional findings by exploring curvilinear and moderating effects on the performance-exit relationship among 11,098 Swiss nationals employed in a bank. Survival regression revealed that performance is curvilinearly related to quits and that bonus pay deterred superior performers from leaving more than did pay increases. Further, the average number of job levels advanced per promotion rather than promotion rate increased quit risks. Cultural and organizational moderators of performance-termination associations and effective strategies for retaining top performers are discussed.  相似文献

Much of the effort to understand the brain substrate of theory of mind and empathy has involved the study of individuals with deficits in that domain, such as those on the autism spectrum. Studying individuals with presumed superior abilities in picking up social signals may yield important additional information. We predicted that psychic readers may have superior abilities and tested this by contrasting a group of 22 professional psychic readers with matched controls on a measure of theory of mind ("Reading the Mind in the Eyes" test) and a multidimensional measure of empathy [Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI)]. Although psychic readers were not superior in reading the language of the eyes, they were shown to have more cognitive empathy, as measured with the "Fantasy" subscale of the IRI. We discuss the merits of research involving "experts" in social cognition and propose other possible groups of "master mindreaders."  相似文献

A GFP is controversially debated on regarding the hierarchical structure of personality. Apart from theoretical argumentations, support for the existence of such a factor calls on the intercorrelations repeatedly found between personality domains. The current study used a data set containing one self-rating and two peer-ratings in order to replicate recent methodological approaches in modeling the GFP but also to apply a specific multirater approach able to disentangle method biases and to correct for nested data structure. Results did show the emergence of a GFP when modeled only with peer- or self-ratings, but did not support the idea of a GFP when modeled with multirater nested data. Findings are discussed including an interpretation of the GFP as successful impression management.  相似文献

We examined the correspondence between the structure of act-report data and 5-factor models emerging from trait-rating data. Twenty categories were selected as markers for the 5-factor model and retrospective act reports were constructed for the target categories. One hundred eighteen men and women comprising 59 dating couples completed self-based and observer-based act reports. Several factor analyses tested different assumptions. Retaining total act performance (TAP) produced a blend of the traditional 5 factors. Removing TAP closely reproduced the 5-factor model in both principal-components and procrustes analyses. Correlations between the derived act factors and trait ratings from 6 data sources support a reinterpretation of the traditional trait labels. Discussion focuses on the implications of different assumptions on the formulation of a basic model of personality structure.  相似文献

The averaged judgment of knowledgeable others provides the best available point of reference both for the definition of personality structure in general and for assessing someone's personality in particular. Self-judgments, as in personality questionnaires, are intrinsically deficient because judgment errors cannot be averaged out. The recommended procedure for assessing someone's personality is to give a personality questionnaire, phrased in the third person singular, to those who know the target best. The increasing prevalence of dementia among members of the Christian Churches prompts a re-evaluation of Christian ecclesiology. This is particularly true for the ecclesiology born of the theologies of liberation, because of the emphasis it places upon conscious participation in the historical life of the community. The present article draws on stories of people with dementia as recorded by themselves and those close to them; by reflection upon these stories, it seeks to re-think the character of the Church in the face of this challenge, and so to offer a richer interpretation of its identity as a community of liberation.  相似文献

The effect of team-member experience was examined in relation to perceptions of importance of teamwork behaviors during an analysis of team performance. Impor- tance ratings were collected from military aircrews (i.e., two-member teams) from three distinct types of aircraft. Results indicated that when assessing team behavior importance, less experienced team members weighted difficulty of performing team behaviors more heavily, whereas more experienced team members weighted time spent performing team behaviors more heavily. Implications for analyzing team performance, with respect to the process of conducting such analyses and the type of information collected, are discussed.  相似文献

Animals' improvement in capturing cryptic prey with experience has long been attributed to a perceptual mechanism, the specific search image. Detection could also be improved by adjusting rate of search. In a series of studies using both naturalistic and operant search tasks, pigeons searched for wheat, dyed to produce 1 conspicuous and 2 equally cryptic prey types. Contrary to the predictions of the search-rate hypothesis, pigeons given a choice between the 2 cryptic types took the type experienced most recently. However, experience with 1 cryptic type improved accuracy on the other cryptic type, a result inconsistent with a search image specific to 1 prey type. Search image may better be thought of as priming of attention to those features of the prey type that best distinguish the prey from the background.  相似文献

This paper examined the effects of personality traits on individuals' reactions to broken promises. We studied the effects of Neuroticism and Agreeableness on emotive and cognitive responses to breach and investigated whether these effects varied across different types (economic vs. social) and severity (high vs. low) of breach. We collected data from a scenario-based experiment with 119 undergraduate participants. Neuroticism was found to influence emotive and cognitive responses, whereas Agreeableness influenced emotive responses. Agreeableness also interacted with the type and severity of breach to differentially predict individuals' responses to breach.  相似文献

The present study tries to characterize the specificity of female conversion by examining the—mostly unedited—sources kept in the State Archive of Venice, i.e. Inquisition trials, official decrees of the Government of Venice, letters and dispatches from and to the bailo (i.e. the Venetian Ambassador at Constantinople). In the light of these documents, the dimension of women's conversion appears to be more intimate than that of their male counterparts. For instance, being far from the political scene, Christian women did not convert to Islam in search of titles and honours; rather, for some of them, to embrace the Muslim religion meant to try to escape from a grey life and to redeem themselves by settling down in the Ottoman domains. On the other hand, Muslim women's conversions to Christianity were often overcast by the shadow of forced proselytism.  相似文献

In consumer behaviour literature, there is a growing concern about the construct validity of brand personality. We extend this critique and introduce a new approach for the conceptualisation and measurement of human brand associations (HBA). A qualitative study of free associations to six brands in different categories and cultures reveals that brand personality traits, as defined in the literature, are practically non‐existent in real associative networks for brands. The responses are, however, in line with the new HBA framework. The findings suggest that consumer researchers should retire the concept of brand personality and use the new approach instead.  相似文献

Little is known about the etiology of histrionic personality disorder (HPD) or its relation to other personality disorders. In this study, we examined whether HPD is etiologically related to psychopathy and more specifically whether HPD and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are sex-typed alternative manifestations of psychopathy. In addition, based on Newman's (1987) response modulation hypothesis of psychopathy, we examined the associations between psychopathic, HPD, and ASPD features and performance on laboratory measures of passive avoidance errors and interference effects. Seventy-five live theater actors completed self-report questionnaires and two laboratory measures of response modulation, and peers completed questionnaires concerning the participants' personality disorder features. The results provided weak and inconsistent support for the hypotheses that HPD is a female-typed variant of psychopathy and that ASPD is a male-typed variant of psychopathy. Contrary to previous findings, scores on response modulation tasks were not significantly related to psychopathy, or to either HPD or ASPD. The limitations of this study and possibilities for future research in this area are outlined.  相似文献

Studies using cluster analysis as a method to identify distinct subtypes of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) have been inconclusive leading some authors to conclude that the method of cluster analysis should be abandoned while others call for the validation of previously defined subtypes. The objective of the current study was to examine the use of cluster analysis as a method of searching for subtypes of DCD to gain a better understanding of how different samples and different measures influence the interpretation of results. The paper provides a detailed review of three commonly cited cluster analytical studies and then explores the possible reasons for the discrepant results by replicating the approach with a different clinical sample. The results highlight the impact of different measures on cluster structure and the importance of adoption of a common standard to facilitate interpretation across studies.  相似文献
