An apparatus for the automatic presentation of object discriminations to monkeys

Object discriminations have traditionally been presented to monkeys by hand in the Wisconsin General Test Apparatus. This method is time-consuming and prone to various kinds of experimenter error. It has proved possible to administer object discriminations automatically by using a modification of the Gloster Saro VM 51 vending machine. This machine, which has space for up to 371 objects, moves them on trays by two electric motors, and the control circuits of these are adapted for external operation by relays and modular programming equipment. A series of simple object discriminations or a concurrent (serial) discrimination task can then be given by remote control. The objects are so treated that by touching either of them the animal completes a circuit, enabling the response to be recorded and appropriately reinforced. Learning in the apparatus seems to be about as efficient as in the Wisconsin General Test Apparatus.

The wide range of shock level adjustment and reliability of operation make it an excellent piece of equipment to have in laboratories using electroconvulsive shock as an experimental tool for research on memory and memory storage processes.     

An apparatus for recording figural after-effects

A simple apparatus is described by which Figural After-effects may be recorded directly from the subject's adjustments of a test figure. Curves which have been recorded confirm the results of other workers obtained by more laborious methods.     

An apparatus for apparent conditioning ofOctopus cyaneus Gray

An ann-out-of-water response was conditioned as an operant inOctopus cyaneus Gray. The response was limited to a vertical tube, 2.54 em i.d, Photoresistive sensors, illuminated with modulated light arranged around the tube above the waterline, detect the presence of an opaque object in the tube. The signal from this response detector is amplified and used to initiate a commercial motor-driven universal feeder according to the reinforcement schedule maintained by the logic control circuit. A sample cumulative record for perfonnance on a CRF schedule is given.     

An extended apparatus for measuring aggression in humans

An extension of Buss’s device for measuring human aggression is described, and the status of aggressive response latency as an indicator of aggressive motivation is discussed. An experiment is described in which measures of latency correlated negatively with those of shock intensity, and both discriminated between Ss who were motivated to aggress and those who were not.
