Interspersed reinforcement and extinction during discrimination learning generate a U-shaped gradient of inhibition about the stimulus correlated with extinction. The present work showed that extinction is not a necessary determinant of inhibitory stimulus control. In Exp. I, a reduction in the rate of reinforcement, through a shift from a multiple variable-interval 1-min variable-interval 1-min schedule to a multiple variable-interval 1-min variable-interval 5-min schedule, resulted in a post-discrimination line orientation gradient of inhibition about the stimulus correlated with the variable-interval 5-min schedule. In Exp. II, the rates of reinforcement, correlated with a pair of stimuli, were held constant during a shift from a multiple variable-interval 1-min variable-interval 1-min schedule to a multiple variable-interval 1-min differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate schedule. Inhibitory stimulus control about the stimulus correlated with the differential reinforcement of low rate was obtained. In both experiments, a reduction in the rate of responding during one stimulus and behavioral contrast during the other stimulus preceded the observation of inhibitory stimulus control.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained to respond on a multiple variable-interval 1-min variable-interval 1-min schedule, then switched to a multiple variable-interval 1-min differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior discrimination training. The rate of reinforcement was held constant during the shift from non-differential reinforcement to discrimination training. Behavioral contrast and post-discrimination inhibitory stimulus control followed the observation of a reduction in the rate of responding to the stimulus correlated with reinforcement for the non-occurrence of pecking.  相似文献

The introduction of a warning signal that preceded a scheduled shock modified the temporal distribution of free-operant avoidance responses. With response-shock and shock-shock intervals held constant, response rates increased only slightly when the response-signal interval was reduced. The result is consistent with Sidman's (1955) findings under different conditions, but at variance with Ulrich, Holz, and Azrin's (1964) findings under similar conditions. Methylphenidate in graded doses increased response rates, modifying frequency distributions of interresponse times. Drug treatment may have disrupted a "temporal discrimination" formed within the signal-shock interval. More simply, methylphenidate influenced response rates by increasing short response latencies after signal onset; this effect was more prominent than the drug's tendency to increase the frequency of pre-signal responses. When signal-onset preceded shock by 2 sec, individual differences in performance were marked; methylphenidate suppressed responding in one rat as a function of increasing dose levels to a greater degree than in a second animal, but both subjects received more shocks than under control conditions.  相似文献

Restricted stimulus control refers to discrimination learning with atypical limitations in the range of controlling stimuli or stimulus features. In the study reported here, 4 normally capable individuals and 10 individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) performed two-sample delayed matching to sample. Sample-stimulus observing was recorded with an eye-tracking apparatus. High accuracy scores indicated stimulus control by both sample stimuli for the 4 nondisabled participants and 4 participants with ID, and eye tracking data showed reliable observing of all stimuli. Intermediate accuracy scores indicated restricted stimulus control for the remaining 6 participants. Their eye-tracking data showed that errors were related to failures to observe sample stimuli and relatively brief observing durations. Five of these participants were then given interventions designed to improve observing behavior. For 4 participants, the interventions resulted initially in elimination of observing failures, increased observing durations, and increased accuracy. For 2 of these participants, contingencies sufficient to maintain adequate observing were not always sufficient to maintain high accuracy; subsequent procedure modifications restored it, however. For the 5th participant, initial improvements in observing were not accompanied by improved accuracy, an apparent instance of observing without attending; accuracy improved only after an additional intervention that imposed contingencies on observing behavior. Thus, interventions that control observing behavior seem necessary but may not always be sufficient for the remediation of restricted stimulus control.  相似文献

Experiment 1 used a within-response procedure to compare inhibitory stimulus control of the extinction cue in multiple variable interval-extinction (mult VI EXT) and the variable time cue in multiple variable interval-variable time (mult VI VT). Experiment 2A made the same comparison using a crossresponse procedure. In addition, Experiment 2A also tested the extinction cue in multiple variable time-extinction (mult VT EXT), and Experiment 2B tested the variable time cue in mult VT EXT. Unlike the mult VI EXT and mult VI VT conditions, the mult VT EXT condition was administered in the absence of a response manipulandum. The main findings of the present study were: (1) cross-response suppression by the variable time cue in mult VI VT; (2) greater response suppression by the extinction cue in mult VI EXT than by either the variable time cue in mult VI VT or the extinction cue in mult VT EXT; and (3) response facilitation by the variable time cue in mult VT EXT. These findings indicate that inhibitory stimulus control based on an operant source (i.e., absence of an R-S contingency) does transfer across responses, and that such transfer cannot be explained in terms of competing responses. These findings also indicate that operant and Pavlovian sources of stimulus control summate algebraically to determine the inhibitory strength of the extinction cue in mult VI EXT. Finally, the third finding is not consistent with notions that emphasize the importance of location and localization of cues explicitly paired with positive events.  相似文献

Pigeons received discrimination training in which the presence of a white field was correlated with variable-interval reinforcement and the presence of a monochromatic field was correlated with extinction. Responses during the negative stimulus prolonged its duration. Five experimental groups each received a different number of discrimination sessions up to 70 sessions. The last session was followed by a wavelength generalization test. The control group was tested both before and after four discrimination sessions. Responding to the positive training stimulus was enhanced in all groups by the discrimination procedures. This enhancement tended to decrease over sessions in some animals but it never disappeared in others. Responding to the test stimuli preceding discrimination training was minimal around the negative stimulus and increased in either direction away from that wavelength. Responding to the test stimuli was not systematically related to the amount of discrimination training.  相似文献

An attempt was made to evaluate reinforcement and stimulus control of imitative and non-imitative behavior. The imitative response required the subject to duplicate the experimenter's response by matching blocks that varied in color. The factor designed to evaluate stimulus control was fading, a procedure that systematically varies the differences between the imitative and non-imitative stimuli. The topography and duration of the non-imitative stimuli were faded in. The factors designed to evaluate reinforcement control were differential reinforcement of non-imitative behavior and time out from positive reinforcement. The results showed stimulus control of non-imitation to be more important than reinforcement control, and that reinforcing events were not sufficient to control non-imitation; while the arrangement of stimulus events was sufficient to control non-imitation. These results were related to studies providing evidence for the processes of discrimination and generalization.  相似文献

This paper concerns the problem of teaching people with intellectual handicaps to respond reliably to spoken words and other auditory instructional stimuli. We describe how microcomputer technology can be applied to implement effective auditory stimulus control shaping methods. With hardware and software currently available, it is now possible to adapt procedures that have been previously successful in stimulus control programming with visual stimuli. We describe several techniques for programming gradual stimulus changes (e.g., stimulus fading, stimulus shaping) to promote auditory discrimination learning. Teaching studies with two individuals with severe mental retardation provide illustrative applications and data supporting the feasibility and potential utility of auditory stimulus control shaping methodology.  相似文献

In Exp. I, shallow U-shaped gradients of inhibition in the line-orientation dimension were obtained from birds that had a vertical (0°) line on a green surround correlated with extinction and a blank green surround correlated with reinforcement. Birds that had massed extinction in the presence of the 0° line showed flat gradients. Thus, discrimination training, but not massed extinction, appears to generate inhibitory control. In Exp. II, as in studies of control by a stimulus correlated with punishment, non-differential training across the line-orientation dimension preceded further sessions. Steep inverted gradients about the 0° line were obtained after discrimination training with the 0° line correlated with extinction. Gradients obtained after massed extinction tended to be flat. Again, discrimination training was critical in obtaining negative gradients of stimulus control.  相似文献

Pigeons learned a successive discrimination between a positive stimulus (red) correlated with a variable-interval 1-min reinforcement schedule and a negative stimulus (vertical line) correlated with either a variable-interval 5-min schedule or extinction. Transfer tests measured the rate of responding to the positive stimulus alone, to various orientations of the negative stimulus, and to the same line orientations superimposed on the positive stimulus. Although there were no gradients with minima at the training value for the negative stimulus dimension, the addition of the negative stimulus dimension to the positive stimulus always resulted in a lower response rate than that for the positive stimulus alone. The results demonstrate that an operational definition of inhibitory stimulus control that requires increased responding to stimuli more distant from a negative stimulus (along some dimension) is not always consistent with a definition that requires the suppression of responding in the presence of one stimulus, the positive stimulus, by the simultaneous presentation of another, the negative stimulus.  相似文献

Rats were exposed to concurrent schedules in which reinforcers occurred independently of behavior. In Experiment 1, rats could control time spent in the following conditions: (1) a light, (2) white noise, and (3) the absence of both light and noise. Response-independent reinforcers occurred at the same rate during the light and the noise and at either a higher rate or not at all in the absence of both stimuli. In subsequent tests, the rats spent more time in a light and noise compound than in either light or noise alone after the absence of both stimuli had signaled no reinforcers. When the absence of both stimuli had signaled a higher rate of reinforcement, however, the rats typically spent less time in the compound than in light or noise alone. In Experiment 2, rats could control time spent in the presence of a light and of a buzzer. The reinforcement rate in the light was twice that in the buzzer. In a later test, the rats spent more time in a light and buzzer compound than in the buzzer, but less time in the compound than in the light. The results show that additive summation, suppressive summation, and stimulus averaging of time allocation occur and that response rate differences between training stimuli are not necessary for these phenomena.  相似文献

Imprinted ducklings were trained to peck a pole using brief presentations of the imprinted stimulus as the response-contingent (reinforcing) event. Subjects were then permitted to spend extended periods with continuous access to food and the imprinted stimulus (via a pole peck). For other (control) subjects the experimental situation was restricted to either responding for the stimulus, or feeding in the absence of the stimulus. For subjects in the control conditions, both activities occurred in cyclic fashion. When, however, there was continuous opportunity to respond for the stimulus and food was available, the tendency to respond was related to the tendency to feed. Other experiments showed that independent presentations of the stimulus could initiate feeding in imprinted ducklings with no prior pairing of the stimulus with food and with no prior pole-peck training. The most consistent control over feeding, however, was exhibited by ducklings that were imprinted and also accustomed to periodic removals of the stimulus. It is concluded that in ducklings, imprinting procedures are sufficient to endow an arbitrary stimulus with the capacity to release feeding behavior.  相似文献

In Experiment I, 24 rats were trained on a multiple variable-interval variable-interval schedule with a doorlight and white noise serving as component cues. Two groups were then shifted to a multiple extinction variable-interval schedule, and a third group was maintained on the multiple variable-interval variable-interval schedule. The multiple extinction variable-interval condition produced positive contrast when either the light or noise signalled extinction, and both of these cues acquired inhibitory stimulus control as measured by a combined cue test. In Experiment II, the multiple variable-interval variable-interval condition was shifted to multiple extinction variable-interval for one group, to multiple variable-time variable-interval for a second group, and was unchanged for the third group. The two experimental conditions produced identical patterns of response-rate reduction in the altered component, but the multiple extinction variable-interval condition produced positive contrast, whereas the multiple variable-time variable-interval condition did not. Subsequent combined cue and resistance to reinforcement tests revealed that the cue signalling extinction acquired stronger inhibitory stimulus control than the cue signalling variable time.  相似文献

Failures to obtain a peak-shift and inhibitory stimulus control following massed extinction in the presence of intra- and interdimensional stimuli confirm earlier results reported by Honig, Thomas, and Guttman (1959) and by Weisman and Palmer (1969). Peak-shifts and inhibitory stimulus control were observed when any of the following procedures intervened for 3 min between massed extinction and generalization testing: (1) S+ presented, responding reinforced; (2) S+ presented, responding not reinforced; or, (3) noncontingent food presented in the presence of a dark key. Rats were exposed to a situation in which a response on lever B was followed by reinforcement if a preceding response on lever A had been made at least 5, 10, or 15 sec before. The effects of signalled unavoidable shock were studied on the behavior maintained by this procedure. All rats made fewer A-to-B sequences during the periods of pre-shock stimulus. In addition, when the A-to-B delay was 10 or 15 sec, the distribution of A-to-B times changed, there being more shorter intervals. However, for animals where the A-to-B delay was 5 sec, the distribution of A-to-B times was not changed during the pre-shock stimulus. In all cases, there was an increased proportion of inappropriate B responses (i.e., with no preceding A response) during the pre-shock stimulus; this was most marked with animals exposed to a 15-sec A-to-B delay.  相似文献

Eight retarded adolescents were trained to select one (a trained S+) of two visual stimuli in response to a spoken word (a trained word). Two different visual stimuli alternated randomly as the S-. To determine if the spoken work was merely a temporal discriminative stimulus for when to respond, or if it also specified which visual stimulus to select, the subjects were given intermittent presentations of untrained (novel) spoken words. All subjects consistently selected the trained S+ in response to the trained spoken word and selected the previous S- in response to the untrained spoken words. It was hypothesized that the subjects were responding away from the trained S+ in response to untrained spoken words, and control by untrained spoken words would not be observed when the trained S+ was not present. The two visual S- stimuli selected on trials of untrained spoken words were presented simultaneously. The untrained spoken words presented on these trials no longer controlled stimulus selections for seven subjects. The results supported the hypothesis that previous control by spoken words was due to responding away from the trained S+ in response to untrained spoken words.  相似文献

Chlorpromazine was studied for its effects on responding under a second-order schedule in which food was presented following a sequence of 20 one-minute fixed-interval components. A brief visual stimulus occurred at the completion of each fixed interval including the one that terminated with food presentation. Chlorpromazine showed rate-dependent effects in that it increased low rates in the early components of the second-order schedule and, to a lesser extent, decreased high rates in the later components. Chlorpromazine also increased rates in the early quarters within the 1-min fixed-internal components and to a smaller extent decreased rates in the final quarter. The alteration in the patterns of responding within 1-min fixed-interval components terminating in a brief stimulus presentation was substantially less than that which occurred throughout the succession of 1-min fixed-interval components terminating in food presentation, thus suggesting that the presentation of the brief stimulus exerted more control over responding within components than did food presentation over the sequence of components. This result and others suggest that studies using drugs may be useful in elucidating the factors controlling patterns of responding in second-order schedules.  相似文献
