作为义务的诚信以及诚信义务的豁免

作为义务的诚信是将诚信看作超越功利的,不管对行为者及其相关人员有利与否,也不管行为主体愿意与否都必须履行的道德责任。当下社会普遍存在的诚信缺失现象有复杂的原因,但将诚信仅仅作为手段来强调而忽视了义务层面的要求,并由此导致人们出于利益的追求而逃避诚信义务则无疑是最主要的原因。因此,要在全社会打造诚信,就必须树立诚信是必须被履行之义务的理念,并努力在全社会形成自觉履行诚信义务的习惯。当然,诚信义务的履行并不是无条件的,在特定的情况下是可以因为更重要更迫切的其他义务的出现而豁免的。     

道德义务与超道德的行为

区别道德义务与超道德行为对于我们认识道德的本质和合理的道德要求具有重要意义。一个人的行为是否道德取决于它是否满足了道德义务所要求的,而不取决于它是否满足了超道德的要求。满足了道德义务的行为是道德的行为,违反了道德义务的行为是不道德的行为,而没有违反道德义务的行为或者不为道德义务所禁止的行为则是道德上可允许的行为。将超道德的行为混同于道德义务会导致超道德的要求,在实践中会引起种种弊病。     

Love and Eschatology

Abstract : This article reflects on the connection between Christian hope for salvation and Christian praxis today. Following a discussion of Christian approaches to hope, salvation, and reconciliation, the eschatological potential of love is explored in conversation with significant theologies of love in Western Christianity. It is argued that love, properly understood, offers the most adequate and dynamic horizon for approaching God's coming reign and for being transformed in the process.

Love and Liturgy

For two millennia Christians have assembled on the “day of the sun” to celebrate the liturgy together. But why do it? Why structure one's life in such a way that participation in ritualized religious activity is a fixed point in the weekly rhythm of one's comings and goings? The project of this essay is to identify reasons to engage in such activity that emanate from the Christian ethical vision. Fundamental to this vision is a contrast between an ethic of proximity, which enjoins us to attend to the needs of those near and dear, and an ethic of outwardness, which enjoins us to both attend to and open ourselves up to the needs of those who belong to various out‐groups. The Christian ethical vision enjoins an ethic of outwardness. A close look at the liturgies of the Eastern Christian tradition reveals the ways in which they express this ethic.     

Love and Privacy

How much privacy must be sacrificed by the partners in a romantic relationship? I begin by showing that we are obligated to reveal to our lovers information about ourselves that we believe could possibly cause them to withdraw their affections from us. If we were to conceal this information, then the lover would be mistaken about whom they loved, yet continue to respect obligations towards, and make sacrifices for, us. I conclude, though, by discussing some problems with both the intelligibility of this obligation and our ability to fulfil it. These problems arise from epistemological and metaphysical problems connected with the notion of a self.
