Out of Darkness: Reverberations of Trauma and its Creative Transformations

Traumatic experiences have a ripple effect, which continues throughout life and function as a powerful inner force that draws the survivor like a magnet to situations and events that allow him or her to work through pain; to give it shape, to release it, to express it to others, to make sense of it and to find some meaning in it. Self-expression through the creative arts can be one of the most effective means to healing. By externalizing what is experienced internally as overwhelming and fragmenting, and by fashioning it into a creative product, the artist brings the traumatic experience into the light of day for a new viewing. This enables reflection and integration of what is internally chaotic to be defined, mastered, and integrated into a coherent meaningful narrative. The artistic product, which can be shared with witnessing others, facilitates connection and fosters a healthy narcissism. The transformation of trauma into creative self-expression is illustrated here by an analysis of three generations of survivors—the author, her father, and her daughter—who each turned to the arts as a means of self-healing.     

Out of the Blue: Reflections on a Shared Trauma

Richard Almond’s paper challenges us to think deeply about the analyst’s impactful desires on the patient. My discussion considers different aspects of this impact: phallic, maternal, ethical. Specifically, I assert that Almond’s position in relation to the female patients he describes is more maternal, or “matricial,” than phallic. Chetrit-Vatine’s concept of matricial space is used to elucidate this point. Further, Almond’s paper asks us to consider seriously psychoanalysis as an ethics regarding responsibility for desire as it relates to countertransference and enactment. The specific desire I focus on is Almond’s desire for his patients’ love. Such as desire involves inherent clinical difficulties.

How to Rule Out Disjunctive Properties

Are there disjunctive properties? This question is important for at least two reasons. First, disjunctive properties are invoked in defense of certain philosophical theories, especially in the philosophy of mind. Second, the question raises the prior issue of what counts as a genuine property, a central concern in the metaphysics of properties. I argue here, on the basis of general considerations in the metaphysics of properties, that there are no disjunctive properties. Specifically, I argue that genuine properties must guarantee similarity‐in‐a‐respect among their instances, and must inhere in their bearers (two notions to be clarified). Disjunctive properties would fail both requirements. I compare the case of disjunctive properties with “mere Cambridge properties,” determinable properties, and functional properties, and show how my conception of properties remains compatible with determinables and functional properties while ruling out disjunctive and mere Cambridge properties.     

Moments Out of Time: A family canoes the north woods

This nature essay recounts the author's 10-day canoe trip with her blended family through Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada. Within the narrative, she explores the ways in which a young child's spirituality ('relational consciousness') influence her own adult consciousness. Conversations with her 6-year-old son lead to her to develop the metaphor of radio frequencies to reflect upon the differences between children's and adults' attitudes toward time: solar time; here-and-now time; the human life cycle; historical time; memory time; industrial time; infinity time. In addition to these conversations, the author draws upon several social critics, nature writers, and others. Other themes touched upon include contemplation, the sense of wonder, bodily knowing, the deep self, and time management. The essay closes with the author reflecting on the need to reclaim time in ways that nurture the natural spirituality of childhood.     

Falling In and Out of Love with Philosophy

In this article, principally through autobiographical remarks, some observations concerning philosophical temperament are made, the example of Gerd Buchdahl as a textual interpreter of classic philosophical texts is invoked, and the position of philosophy in relation to history of science is explored, in particular in the work of Kuhn and Foucault. The article concludes with a reminder of the overall history of philosophy at Cambridge through a discussion of the history of the moral sciences.

Acceptability of Time Out from Reinforcement Procedures for Disruptive Child Behavior:

Forty-eight teachers and forty-eight parents evaluated the effectiveness and acceptability of five behavioral procedures for reducing disruptive behavior in children. The results showed that teachers evaluated the procedures as being more effective and acceptable than did the parents. The treatment procedures rated as most effective and acceptable were reinforcement and isolation and contractual agreement. In additon, the procedures were rated as being more effective and acceptable for 5-year-olds than for 10-year-olds. The results of this study are compared to similiar studies reported by Kazdin.
