This article introduces the ArduiPod Box, an open-source device built using two main components (i.e., an iPod Touch and an Arduino microcontroller), developed as a low-cost alternative to the standard operant conditioning chamber, or “Skinner box.” Because of its affordability, the ArduiPod Box provides an opportunity for educational institutions with small budgets seeking to set up animal laboratories for research and instructional purposes. A pilot experiment is also presented, which shows that the ArduiPod Box, in spite of its extraordinary simplicity, can be effectively used to study animal learning and behavior.  相似文献

Construction of a universal feeder for a cost of less than $200 is described. The feeder consists of two plywood panels, the first of which is circular and has grooves cut around its margin to hold reinforcers. This circular panel is secured to the second, rectangular panel so that it is free to rotate. A brush fixed onto the axle of a stepper motor above the circular panel sweeps the reinforcers away from the circular panel. Another stepper motor rotates the circular panel after each delivery to prepare the next reinforcer for delivery.  相似文献

We present a design for an olfactometer, suitable for fMRI experiments, that can be constructed at extremely low cost. The olfactometer presents odors directly to the nose via a nasal cannula at unobtrusively low flow velocities, with no large assemblies required on or near the subject’s face. The olfactometer can be controlled manually, or by computer via a serial interface. A validation study verified that the olfactometer reliably presents odors to test subjects. Errors and response latency times decreased with increased flow rate in an orderly manner, as expected.  相似文献

An inexpensive system for on-line coordinate plotting is described. Users with access to a computer running ALGOL or FORTRAN, and equipped with analog-to-digital converters, can build the system for less than $50. The program is readily modified for the individual user’s requirements, and interactive features allow data correction and analysis to be carried out during coordinate plotting, with operators warned of plotting errors as they occur.  相似文献

This paper describes a circuit that allows multiple-unit neural activity to be converted to standardized pulses for computer data acquisition. Positive or negative spikes can be converted at any voltage level from positive 25 V to. negative 25 V with visual identification of exactly where on the amplified spike potential conversion occurs. This paper describes how funds from an NSF Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement grant allowed development of a computer lab with a local area network (LAN) for undergraduate research in psychology. The lab has been used mainly in conjunction with an applications of research methods course, but expanded use is expected because of the connection of the LAN to a mainframe computer’s LAN, the proposed installation of PSYCLIT on the LAN, and the proposed connection of the LAN to faculty offices. The main experimental software packages used are MEL Lab and Micro Experimental Laboratory (MEL); both are critical to the lab’s operation. Funds for maintenance of the lab will be obtained by charging applications course students a lab fee.  相似文献

An automated multipurpose activity platform (MAP) that can be used to measure activity in the horizontal plane is described. Detection of the position of a small-bodied animal is based on completion of an electronic circuit in one or several cells of a 21 by 21 matrix below the floor. The MAP is constructed on the basis of an 11 by 11 matrix, but, through electronic averaging, operates functionally on the basis of a 21 by 21 matrix. The MAP has no built-in data storage facility and needs to be interfaced with a recording system. The system has been successfully utilized in measuring open-field activity of the rats.  相似文献

In this paper, we describe a software package, LEDA, for editing two-dimensional images and films. It is written in Turbo-C and was first conceived to work with a high-resolution graphics card (Adage PG90/10, 2,048 × 1,023 × 8 bits) on an IBM PC/AT or compatible computer. The circuit described here can provide the line and frame signals to drive anx, y display scope or oscilloscope at high resolution (1,000 lines) and repetition rate (50 Hz). Synchronizing circuitry at the input of the circuit allows the raster scan to be locked to an input signal, such as the square-wave output from a function generator, while another waveform from the same function genera-tor, the sine output, drives the z (intensity) input of the display scope. A stable spatial contrast display results. Spatial contrast depth is a direct function of z input modulation voltage. Spatial frequency is a direct function of the function generator frequency. The package includes both general-purpose laboratory utilities (e.g., for timing delays, sensing and controlling switches, etc.) and specialized functions to facilitate elementary signal processing operations. The construction of a research-oriented biofeedback thermometer with digital readout is described. The device uses recently developed low-cost integrated circuits and has a liquid crystal readout with capability of .1° and .01°F display. Internal calibration circuitry enables precision monitoring of overall performance stability. The complete design and construction of a versatile low-cost interface module are presented. This module functions as a combination pulse lengthener-stretcher with an added feature of optical isolation between the input and output circuits. It is useful in interfacing many behavioral and physiological instruments that utilize different voltage levels and polarities in their respective logic systems. A flexible and inexpensive data acquisition and display system based upon the KIM-1 microcomputer module is described. A simple signal-conditioning circuit and program are shown that will allow events to be counted at rates to 1,000/sec and stored in successive time bins. The program counts events from each of two event detectors and stores the count of each detector in an independent set of time bins. Up to 127 16-bit bins are available to each event detector and bin width can be varied from 1 msec to 1 min. A separate input can be used to time-lock data collection to a specific stimulus allowing poststimulus histograms or IRTs to be collected. The collected data can be sequentially displayed as a decimal number on a built-in LED display and stored for later analysis on an inexpensive audio cassette recorder.  相似文献

In this study, we describe the development and evaluation of a self-instructional program for installing 10 low-cost/no-cost weatherization materials (e.g., weatherstripping, caulking). This program was a weatherization and retrofit manual (WARM) providing step-by-step instructions and illustrations. Boy and Girl Scouts participated and used either the WARM or existing product instructions (EPI) to apply the materials. Scouts installed the materials properly only when they used the WARM.  相似文献
