An identical-subject-repeated-measures design, involving two counterbalanced conditions, was employed to investigate adaptation when the presentation of a 100-word list is distributed and when it is massed. In Condition I, the entire list was read aloud during each of five successive trials. Since a specific word reoccurred only after all of the others were displayed, the presentation may be said to be distributed. In contrast, the Condition II presentation was massed. Only after a word was read five times was the next one presented. The results indicate that significant adaptation occurred in both conditions. However, adaptation plateaued in the distributed condition. This was not the case when massing was employed. The among-condition analyses revealed that significantly more adaptation occurred in the massed than in the distributed condition.  相似文献

We determined the curvature of apparent frontoparallels in a natural scene (a large lawn in broad daylight). Data on frontoparallels in these conditions are very sparse and reveal idiosyncratic curvatures of frontoparallels and irregular variation with distance. We used a method of bisection of linear segments indicated through pairs of stakes at angular separations (from the vantage point) of up to 120 deg. Distances of 2 m and 10 m (in the forward direction) were used. The bisection was carried out by the observer through maneuvering a radio-controlled vehicle carrying a third stake. Four observers participated in the experiment; they had no problems with the task and yielded mutually consistent results. We found that the frontoparallels are significantly curved and are concave towards the observer. Surprisingly, the sign of the curvature is opposite to that found when the frontoparallels are defined through an exocentric pointing task. Available theory (Luneburg's) does not predict this, but the theory is hardly applicable to the case of vision in natural scenes. This interesting discrepancy has not been reported before.  相似文献

Hypoxia is known to alter visual functions. In the present study, the effects of chronic hypobaric hypoxia upon visual color discrimination were studied in 8 subjects participating in a simulated climb from sea level (PO2 = 210 hPa) to 8,848 m (PO2 = 70 hPa) over a 31-day period of confinement in a decompression chamber ('Everst-Comex 97'). During these investigations, the subjects were required to discriminate between colors of different hue in the red, blue, and green ranges. Alterations in color discrimination increased slightly but significantly as altitude increased. Impairments occurred mainly in the red and blue ranges. In addition, our results further indicate that color discrimination would be affected only when a minimum threshold of difference between color stimuli is not present. Methodological and physiological implications are discussed.  相似文献

The visual attention behavior of 2- to 3-month-old infants was monitored as part of their participation in an operant conditioning study. Attention was monitored under three conditions: a baseline condition where a visual target remained stationary; a baseline conditioning where the target was made to move on an aperiodic, response-independent schedule; and a conditioning phase where the target was operantly under the control of the subjects. Fixation time differed significantly as a function of experimental condition, with the response-contingent condition producing the greatest amount of fixation and the stabile, baseline condition producing the least amount of fixation. The implications of the findings for intervention purposes are discussed.  相似文献

The apparent contraction of a rotating light arc occurred during the first 20 rain, but not after 25 min, of dark adaptation. Estimates of length obtained after 25 min were affected by the level of luminance of the arc but not by its speed of rotation, by dark gaps in the arc, or by instructions to estimate its length in terms of a brighter region. There was no tendency for a rotating dark arc to appear shorter at any stage of adaptation.  相似文献

A study was conducted to test the effect of two different forms of real-time visual feedback on expressive percussion performance. Conservatory percussion students performed imitations of recorded teacher performances while receiving either high-level feedback on the expressive style of their performances, low-level feedback on the timing and dynamics of the performed notes, or no feedback. The high-level feedback was based on a Bayesian analysis of the performances, while the low-level feedback was based on the raw participant timing and dynamics data. Results indicated that neither form of feedback led to significantly smaller timing and dynamics errors. However, high-level feedback did lead to a higher proficiency in imitating the expressive style of the target performances, as indicated by a probabilistic measure of expressive style. We conclude that, while potentially disruptive to timing processes involved in music performance due to extraneous cognitive load, high-level visual feedback can improve participant imitations of expressive performance features.  相似文献

Absolute sensitivity to white noise was measured with the O in the dark, in constant illumination, and in the dark but with sound-synchronized flashes of light at three different intensities. A confidence rating procedure was used, and the results were analyzed in terms of the theory of signal detectability. There appeared to be no consistent effect of auxiliary visual stimulation on absolute auditory sensitivity for the four Os examined.  相似文献

Rod interference is a possible factor contributing to the elevation of chromatic threshold in peripheral vision. It was found that light adaptation lowered peripheral chromatic thresholds. This result was interpreted as being due to the lowering of rod sensitivity. It was also found that light in the photochromatic interval appeared blue, indicating that rods may add a blue component to peripheral color vision.  相似文献

The importance in mobility performance of the rate of presentation of visual information, binocular versus monocular vision, the use of multiple rather than single reference points, and local motion parallax was investigated in two experiments. In each experiment ten subjects walked a triangular mobility course in a totally darkened room; the only visible targets were light emitting diodes (LEDs), mounted on poles, at the apices of the triangle. The LEDs were mounted so that one or two could be used in a trial; if two were used the distance between them was varied horizontally (in experiment 1) and vertically (in experiment 2). The subjects walked around the course under a range of conditions, including two 'optimal trials' in full light. The LEDs were flashed for 1 ms at frequencies of 0.5, 1 and 5 Hz in experiment 1 and at 1 and 5 Hz in experiment 2. Mobility was measured with the use of an ultrasonic locator system which measured the subject's position on the course 10 times per second. The mean velocity of the subject in traversing the course was significantly reduced when the flash rate was slower, when the subject had one eye occluded, or when there was only one LED on the pole; when the spacing between the LEDs was varied, either vertically or horizontally performance was unaffected. These results imply that the frequency of updating of visual information is important in determining mobility performance, as are binocular cues, but that local motion parallax is not important. The number of LEDs on each pole had a significant effect on mobility performance an 'object' (two lights) gave more information than a point reference.  相似文献

A three-component model of spatial vision is proposed, consisting of (1) a feedback stage, (2) a feedforward stage, (3) a threshold detector. The components correspond to physiological processes; in particular, the feedforward control signal corresponds to the “surround’s” signal in the receptive fields of retinal ganglion cells. The model makes appropriate qualitative predictions of: (l)a square-root law (Δl ∞ l1/2) for detection at low luminances, (2) a Weber law (Δl ∞ l) at high luminances, (3) additivity of threshold masking effects at high background luminances, (4) receptive fields that, in the dark, consist only of an excitatory center and that, in the light, also contain inhibitory surrounds, (5) the variation of spatial characteristics of receptive fields depending on the temporal characteristic of the test stimulus used to measure them, (6) the subjective appearance of Mach bands, (7) sine-wave contrast-threshold transfer functions, (8) the frequent failure of disk-detection experiments to demonstrate inhibitory surrounds, and (9) various second-order threshold effects, such as reduced spatial integration for long-duration stimuli, reduced temporal integration for large-area stimuli, and the increased effect of background luminance on the detection of large-area stimuli. Predictions are improved by assuming there exist various sizes of receptive fields that determine thresholds jointly.  相似文献
