In order to assess the role of the structural components of the Mueller-Lyer illusion, subjects reproduced the central extent of standard Mueller-Lyer figures and configural variations. Illusory magnitude of the underestimated wings-in and overestimated wings-out figures was examined with selective amputations of the oblique wings and central line segment (shaft). Variations were presented at 0, 45, 90, and 135 deg from vertical. Orientation had no reliable effect on illusory magnitude. Elimination of the shaft effected a decrease in the apparent extent for all variations, presumably due to the addition of the filled-unfilled space illusory effect to the standard Mueller-Lyer effect. A second study corroborated this finding The decrease in apparent extent consequent to shaft removal occurred independently of any response factor. Selective wing removal differentially decreased the illusory magnitude of the standard Mueller-Lyer figures; this was discussed with regard to a dual-illusion hypothesis. Finally, variations that contained no intersecting lines produced a significant illusion in the direction of the standard Mueller-Lyer figures, suggesting the involvement of higher level, nonperipheral distortion mechanisms.  相似文献

Subjects estimated the length of a horizontal line which was flanked by oblique angles pointing both inside and outside (this figure would be created by superimposing the wings-in and wings-out figures of the Mueller-Lyer illusion). Ignoring the outside wings resulted in an underestimation of the line length of comparable magnitude to that obtained for the wings-in Mueller-Lyer figure. Ignoring the inside wings caused an overestimation of the line length only when the inner and outer wings were of non-corresponding orientations. These results emphasize the role of cognitive factors in the Mueller-Lyer illusion.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to examine the effects of multiple fins on the magnitude of the Mueller-Lyer illusion. All studies showed that the multiple form of the elongation illusion was greater than the average of the components and that the multiple form of the shrinkage illusion was smaller than either of the components. The pattern of results failed to support either simple addition models or more complex averaging theories of illusions. A cross-attribute summation hypothesis and a filled space hypothesis were proposed as possible explanations for the results.  相似文献

The relative efficiency of five techniques of illusion measurement were tested on parametric variations of the Mueller-Lyer and Ebbinghaus figures. The methods of average error, reproduction, and selection from a graded series all showed significant effects of configurational variations. The subjective scaling techniques each failed to measure adequately changes in illusion magnitude for one illusion configuration. The suitability of the tested measures for group administration is also discussed.  相似文献

Morinaga’s paradox of displacement is constructed by setting several copies of the two Mueller-Lyer figures one above the other. The Mueller-Lyer illusion is that the wings pointing out seem farther apart than wings pointing in, and Morinaga’s paradox is that when one looks down a column of wings pointing alternately one way and the other, they appear misaligned but in the opposite direction from the Mueller-Lyer illusion. The hypothesis of this paper is that the subject, under instructions to align the vertical array of wings, sets up a vertical figure-ground organization different from that used in judging the horizontal distance between wings, and that the two illusions are contingent upon the two organizations. The experiment showed that Morinaga’s paradox occurs when only one column of wings is shown, in agreement with the figure-ground hypothesis, and also shows that Morinaga’s paradox disappears when short line segments are introduced which disrupt the vertical figure-ground organization.  相似文献

A size estimation (SE) paradigm and the Mueller-Lyer (ML) illusion were used to examine perceptual disturbances in schizophrenics. 35 reliably diagnosed (DSM III-R) schizophrenics were compared to 20 subjects with no history of psychiatric illness. Perceptual distortions found in previous studies of schizophrenics were only to a certain extent confirmed in the present results. More overestimators were found among the schizophrenics than among the normals on the SE task. The schizophrenics, first of all the chronic patients, also proved to be more prone to the Mueller-Lyer illusion. A reason why the very clear differences between schizophrenics and normals found in previous examinations were not confirmed in the present study, might be that a reliable diagnostic instrument was for the first time used in this kind of study.  相似文献

This study focuses on a configurational coincidence among six different illusions, two being motion illusions (reversed phi movement and phi movement), two being binocular stereo effects (Anstis-Rogers type and Gregory-Heard type), one being a position illusion (Gregory-Heard illusion), and one being an orientation illusion (Café-Wall-like tilt illusion). The stimuli of these six illusions or effects share the same configuration, in which a thin region is flanked by thick regions of different luminances. A phenomenological comparison is conducted with the use of dynamic demonstrations as well as static ones. In particular, the reversed phi movement is extensively discussed.  相似文献

Listening to a tone changing unidirectionally in sound level causes an illusion of changing loudness in a steady tone afterward. This aftereffect may indicate channels for detecting the feature of change in sound level, which would primarily concern dynamic sound localization. Three subjects, one of whom was the author, participated in this study. The author predicted that opposite adaptation of the ears (the adapting stimulus is heard to move from one ear to the other) should lead to a movement aftereffect. This was not reported by the subjects. However, the subjects did report a changing-loudness aftereffect in a monaural test stimulus, and the characteristics of the changing-loudness aftereffect (such as its magnitude) were consistent with previous data, suggesting a two-stage channel hypothesis: Output from channels for several features, including sound-level change, simultaneously stimulate movement channels.  相似文献

The model of inhibitory interaction between orientation detectors was examined by prolonged presentation of grating patterns (which was expected to induce orientation-selective adaptation) before measurement of the Z?llner illusion. Adaptation effects were measured under conditions which excluded intrusion by the tilt aftereffect. In experiment 1, illusion magnitude greatly decreased only when the orientation of the adapting grating was the same as that of the inducing lines, which confirmed the first prediction deduced from the model. There was no effect of adapting grating when it was oriented more than 20 degrees away from the inducing lines. In experiment 2, adaptation effects were selective not only to orientation but also to spatial frequency. In experiment 3 it was shown that illusion reduction was mediated neither by lowered apparent contrast of the inducing lines nor by retinal adaptation. The results are discussed with respect to the nature of adaptation and possible physiological correlates.  相似文献

Available evidence seems to indicate that illusion decrement represents reorganization of cognitive components involved in visual-geometric illusions. Observers viewed one of the two forms of the Mueller-Lyer illusion, containing differential opportunities for peripheral structural interactions, for a 10-min test session on each of 5 successive days. The magnitude of the distortion decreased to a different asymptotic level in each of the two configurations with the form, with more opportunity for structural interactions showing the higher asymptote. Thus, this asymptote probably represents the structural or physiological contribution to the illusory distortion.  相似文献

Wallach has described in qualitative terms the movement of lines behind apertures. We related the data he obtained to the aperture problem, constructed a model of movement perception, and carried out tests of the model. Experiment 1 was a parametric study, and showed the conditions under which a reliable illusion (the barber pole illusion) of diagonal movement of lines along an aperture could be obtained, and when fluctuating judgements or veridical percepts were obtained. On the basis of this study a dipole model was constructed. The model was further developed and tested. In experiment 2 the effects of total area of stimulation were examined: diagonal gratings were viewed behind multiple apertures. In experiment 3 the effects of local signs were examined: diagonal gratings were viewed in an aperture which had edges cut in small steps and stairs, with the risers parallel to the grating, and the treads parallel to the direction of motion of the grating. Experiment 4 was designed to test a prediction about the motion aftereffect of dots near and far from the point of fixation, and the results confirmed the model. It was concluded that the model accounts for the barber pole illusion and, generally, for the movement of gratings in apertures.  相似文献

One's being able to allocate attention to particular regions or properties of the visual field is fundamental to visual information processing. Visual attention determines what input is carefully analyzed and what input is more or less ignored. But at what stage of the visual system is this process evident? We describe three experiments that demonstrate an effect of voluntary spatial attention and voluntary object-based attention on an orientation illusion (the tilt aftereffect) that is believed to take place in primary visual cortex. This finding, in which selective visual attention influences adaptation to visual orientation information, contributes to mounting evidence for a view of visual perception in which mutual interaction takes place between high-level and low-level subsystems.  相似文献

Noting the similarity between the illusion decrement and selective adaptation paradigms, Long has challenged the view that illusion decrement effects reflect a strategic--as opposed to a structural--underlying mechanism, and has called for further research on this issue. To investigate the confound between prolonged free inspection and repeated trials in the standard decrement procedure, the effects of three inspection conditions (continuous, intermittent, and immediate) on the magnitude of the overestimation Mueller-Lyer illusion have been assessed under two levels of trials (a total of two or six judgments). Significant illusion decline was found only under conditions of repeated trials, with either continuous or intermittent inspection. These findings do not support the predictions of purely structural theories (including neural adaptation and efferent readiness theories), according to which degree of decrement should be determined solely by viewing time. Instead, the data demonstrate that illusion decrement is a product of practice, providing converging evidence for the view of decrement as involving a cognitive 'recalibration' or learning process.  相似文献

The interference of the wings of the wings-in part of the Mueller-Lyer figure was examined for the version of the illusion in which one part of the figure is placed above the other. Wings were removed in pairs from either above or below the shaft of one of the two parts of the figure. Subjects indicated the apparent difference between the lengths of the shafts of the two parts of the figure. Removal of the wings between the shafts of the wings-in part of the figure reduced the amount of the illusion more than removal of the wings from outside the shafts. Removing wings from the wings-out part of the figure reduced the amount of illusion, but it made no difference whether the wing removal occurred between or outside the shafts.  相似文献

The effects of acute plasma tryptophan manipulation on changes in hostile, anxious, and depressive mood were studied in 48 males. Subjects consumed tryptophan-free or nutritionally balanced amino acid mixtures as a means of manipulating brain serotonin levels. Mood (hostility, anxiety, depression) was assessed pre- and 5 hr post-ingestion using the Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist. Overall, the tryptophan manipulation resulted in significant changes in hostile mood. Analyses also revealed a stronger association between changes in plasma tryptophan and changes in hostility in subjects with high levels of pre-existing hostile traits compared with low levels of hostile traits, and in subjects with high vs. Low antisocial traits. There was no significant association between changes in plasma tryptophan and changes in depression. The results suggest that persons with high levels of trait hostility may be more susceptible to the effects of acute manipulation of plasma tryptophan on hostile mood. Aggr. Two experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that decrement of the Mueller-Lyer illusion with inspection is due to learning to differentiate the test element from the accessory lines. In one experiment, the test element is predifferentiated for the observer by means of configurational variations and in the other by restriction of attention. Although the initial magnitude of the illusion is found to be inversely proportional to the amount of predifferentiation, the slopes of the decrement curves are not affected.  相似文献

Masking, aftereffect, and illusion paradigms were used to establish the spatial selectivity of curvature detectors in human vision. Arcs with the same chord orientation mask each other maximally when they are identical in radius and direction of curvature. There is gradual reduction in masking over an extensive spatial range as arcs diverge in curvature. The transition from convexity to concavity does not produce discontinuity in the masking function. The extent to which a straight line appears curved also depends on the curvature of arcs shown previously (aftereffect) or at the same time (illusion). It is suggested that these effects could occur through selective adaptation of detectors responsive to either global curvature or the orientation of local straight-line approximations within an arc. Evidence is reviewed in support of the latter interpretation.  相似文献

Day and Wade (1969) proposed that visual “normalization” and the visual tilt aftereffect depend upon the gravitational orientation of test and inducing figures and that the retina! orientation of these figures is irrelevant. Their failure to distinguish between “normalization” and aftereffect is pointed out, and an analysis of their experiment suggested that it could not yield data which would unambiguously support either the gravitational or the retinal viewpoint. An experiment was reported in which a tilt aftereffect was found to occur under conditions where inducing and test figures could not vary in gravitational orientation. It was concluded that retinal orientation is a sufficient factor in the tilt aftereffect situation; whether it is a necessary factor or whether gravitational orientation is also sufficient remains to be determined.  相似文献

The effect of structure and angle of tilt on the magnitude of the tilted-room illusion and its relationship to the illusion produced by a tilted-line field were examined in two experiments. In Experiment L, nine groups of 13 Ss were tested under three conditions of room tilt in the frontal plane (22.5, 45, and 67.5 deg) and under three conditions of structure (empty room, room with a back wall of stripes, and room with furniture). The results indicate that, while magnitude and direction of the illusion vary with degree of room tilt, structure increases the magnitude of the illusion only at a 45-deg room tilt. In Experiment 2, a field of lines was presented through a circular reduction tube to three groups of 13 Ss under three conditions of line tilt (22.5, 45, and 67.5 deg). An illusion occurred that was much smaller in magnitude and functionally different for the three tilt conditions when compared with the tilted-room illusion.  相似文献

Previous research has suggested that the visual tilt aftereffect operates according to a gravitational frame of reference. Three experiments were conducted to test this conclusion further. In each experiment, observers (with head upright) adjusted an illuminated bar to apparent vertical following various adaptation conditions. In Experiment 1, observers were given clear visual cues for objective vertical while adjusting the bar. In Experiment 2, they were not given visual cues for vertical. The adaptation conditions in Experiments 1 and 2 consisted of various combinations of head and stimulus tilt. Experiment 3 investigated the effects of head tilt alone. The results indicated that the tilt aftereffect follows a retinal frame of reference under some conditions (Experiment 1) and appears to follow a gravitational frame under others (Experiment 2). These results can be predicted by a simple model involving two factors, a purely visual aftereffect that follows a retinal frame and an extravisual aftereffect that appears to follow a gravitational frame.  相似文献
