Being able to exploit features of the human face to predict health and fitness can serve as an evolutionary advantage. Surface features such as facial symmetry, averageness, and skin colour are known to influence attractiveness. We sought to determine whether observers are able to extract more complex features, namely body weight. If possible, it could be used as a predictor for health and fitness. For instance, facial adiposity could be taken to indicate a cardiovascular challenge or proneness to infections. Observers seem to be able to glean body weight information from frontal views of a face. Is weight estimation robust across different viewing angles? We showed that participants strongly overestimated body weight for faces photographed from a lower vantage point while underestimating it for faces photographed from a higher vantage point. The perspective distortions of simple facial measures (e.g., width-to-height ratio) that accompany changes in vantage point do not suffice to predict body weight. Instead, more complex patterns must be involved in the height-weight illusion.  相似文献

The apparent misalignment of two oblique collinear lines was investigated in two experiments. In the first the effect with the lines at 45° to the median plane was compared with that for the same two lines separated by the conventional parallels of the Poggendorff figure. The illusion with the two lines was consistent and significant but about one-third the magnitude of that with the parallels. The two illusions were significantly correlated. In the second experiment the angle of the two oblique, collinear lines was varied in 15° steps. The misalignment illusion was maximal at 45° and smaller but significant at 60 and 75°. There was no significant effect at 15 and 30°.  相似文献

Abstract

Two Experiments demonstrate the existence of a “collapse illusion”, in which reasoners evaluate Truthteller-type propositions (“I am telling the truth”) as if they were simply true, whereas Liar-type propositions (“I am lying”) tend to be evaluated as neither true nor false. The second Experiment also demonstrates an individual differences pattern, in which shallow reasoners are more susceptible to the illusion. The collapse illusion is congruent with philosophical semantic truth theories such as Kripke's (1975 Kripke, S. 1975. Outline of a theory of truth. The Journal of Philosophy, 72: 690716. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]), and with hypothetical thinking theory's principle of satisficing, but can only be partially accounted for by the model theory principle of truth. Pragmatic effects related to sentence cohesion further reinforce hypothetical thinking theory interpretation of the data, although the illusion and cohesion data could also be accounted for within a modified mental model theory.  相似文献

In recent years society has come to expect more from the "socially-responsible" company and the global HIV/AIDS pandemic in particular has resulted in some critics saying that the "Big Pharma" companies have not been living up to their social responsibilities. Corporate social responsibility can be understood as the socio-economic product of the organizational division of labor in complex modern society. Global poverty and poor health conditions are in the main the responsibilities of the world's national governments and international governmental organizations, which possess society's mandate and appropriate organizational capabilities. Private enterprises have neither the societal mandate nor the organizational capabilities to feed the poor or provide health care to the sick in their home countries or in the developing world. Nevertheless, private enterprises do have responsibilities to society that can be categorized as what they must do, what they ought do, and what they can do.  相似文献

Subjects were exposed to a prismatically displaced view of their actively-moved right hand which was optically “stopped”; they achieved as much adaptation in this condition as in one in which they were allowed full “reafferent” stimulation. It comes as no surprise that viewing a high-resolution photograph through a screen reduces its clarity. Yet when a coarsely quantized (i.e., pixelated) version of the same photo is seen through a screen its clarity is increased. Six experiments investigated this illusion of clarity. First, the illusion was quantified by having participants rate the clarity of quantized images with and without a screen (Experiment 1). Interestingly, the illusion occurs both when the wires of the screen are aligned with the blocks of the quantized image and when they are shifted horizontally and vertically (Experiments 2 and 3), casting doubt on the hypothesis that a local filling-in process is involved. The finding that no illusion occurs when the photo is blurred rather than quantized (Experiment 4) and that the illusion is sharply reduced when visual attention is divided (Experiment 5) argue for an image segmentation process that falsely attributes the edges of the quantized blocks to the screen. Finally, the illusion is larger when participants adopt an active rather than a passive cognitive strategy (Experiment 6), pointing to the importance of cognitive control in the illusion.  相似文献

Circularly repeating patches containing sawtooth luminance gradients produce a sensation of motion when viewed in the periphery. Illusory motion is perceived in a dark-to-light direction, but only when one's gaze is directed to different locations around the stimulus, a point outside the display is fixated and the observer blinks, or when the stimulus is sequentially displayed at different locations whilst the observer fixates one point. We propose that the illusion is produced by the interaction of three factors: (i) introducing transients as a result of eye movements or blinks; (ii) differing latencies in the processing of luminance; and (iii) spatiotemporal integration of the differing luminance signals in the periphery.  相似文献

A new tactile (more properly termed haptic) illusion, the rotating hourglass, was investigated in the laboratory by rotating a rod end for end between the S’s thumb and forefinger. This illusion, which is an apparent decrease in the diameter of the rod at the point of contact with the fingers, was easily observed by 19 of the 20 Ss. When the illusion was studied as a function of time, the magnitude of the illusion increased over time with a mean decrease in apparent diameter of 52.3% from the beginning to the end of the 38-sec trials. A theory of differential adaptation of the skin is postulated to explain the rotating hourglass illusion and a similar illusion.  相似文献

This illusory correlation led Ward (1991) to conclude that neural adaptation and informational adaptation are asynchronous. The theoretical and practical importance of a double undertaking is discussed: the development of learning and transfer taxonomies with psychometric relevance and the building of psychometric classificatory systems with implications for learning and instruction. Psychometric classifications of human performances are most often based on the covariation of individual differences. The model presented justifies the expectation that the transfer from learning one task to learning another is linearly dependent on the coefficient of intercorrelation between the two tasks when the coefficient is corrected for attenuation. Two studies so far have explicitly confirmed the main deductions from this model. Contrary to the predictions, however, the regression curves yielded negative intercepts. Two empirically testable explanations are offered, one of which would be in full accordance with the model, while the other would call for a further assumption.  相似文献

The fluttering-heart illusion is a perceived lagging behind of a colour target on a background of a different colour when the two are oscillated together. It has been proposed that the illusion is caused by a differential in the perceptual latencies of different colours (Helmholtz 1867/1962), a differential in rod-cone latencies (von Kries 1896) and rod-cone interactions (von Grünau 1975, 1976 Vision Research 15 431-436, 437-440; 16 397-401; see list of references there). The purpose of this experiment was to assess the hypothesis that the fluttering-heart illusion is caused by a differential in the perceived velocities of chromatic and achromatic motion. To evaluate this hypothesis, we tested observers possessing normal colour vision and deuteranopes. The perceived delay of a chromatic target relative to an achromatic target was measured as a function of background cone contrast and target colour. For observers with normal colour vision, the perceived delay of the chromatic target is greater in the L-S than the L-M testing conditions. The reverse is observed in deuteranope observers. We suggest that this is caused by the absence of an L-M opponent mechanism contributing to chromatic motion in deuteranopes. Greater background cone contrasts tended to yield smaller perceived delays in both normal and deuteranope observers, indicating that greater chromatic modulation decreases the perceived delay of the colour target. These results support the hypothesis that the fluttering-heart illusion can be explained by a differential in the perceived velocities of chromatic and achromatic motion.  相似文献

When observers binocularly fixate on an inclined sheet of paper with equally spaced dots, an apparent "staircase" is seen. We varied the inclination of the sheet, the spacing among the dots, and the viewing distance. The results indicate that (1) as the space and the inclination decreased, the number of apparent steps increased and the height of apparent steps decreased, and (2) as the distance and the inclination increased, the number of apparent steps decreased, and eventually the illusion disappeared. The nearest-neighbor rule and the extent of the vertical horopter inclination explain the characteristics of the illusion.  相似文献
