ON CLAIMED "ORTHODOXY", QUIBBLING WITH WORDS, AND SOME SERIOUS IMPLICATIONS: A COMMENT ON THE TILLEY-D'COSTA DEBATE ABOUT RELIGIOUS PLURALISM

The article provides critical comments on three features of the recent debate between Terrence W. Tilley and Gavin D'Costa in Modern Theology. The use of the Vatican document Dominus Iesus as a parameter of “Christian” or even “Roman Catholic orthodoxy” is criticized as being presumptuous and highly questionable. Further it is argued that Tilley's and D'Costa's disagreement is less substantial than they claim and is largely rooted in contradictory statements within Dominus Iesus itself. Finally, it is held that their consensus in relation to the status of other religions displays an inability to overcome triumphalism and supersessionism, and entails, in line with Dominus Iesus, that other religions are “gravely deficient”.

Translation of Paul Ricoeur, “D'un testament à l'autre” Translator's Preface: This essay, part of the section “Essais d'herméneutique biblique” in Ricoeur's Lectures 3: aux frontières de la philosophie, is one example of the later Ricoeur's increasing willingness to let theology and philosophy speak to each other. I would like to draw readers’ attention to two moves made here by Ricoeur: (1) the way in which his philosophical hermeneutics opens the way for a biblical ontology rooted in Exodus 3:14, and (2) the way his theory of metaphor reveals the same implied ontology behind 1 John 4:8.

Secondary traumatization among former prisoners of wars' adult children: the mediating role of parental bonding

Background and Objectives: The aversive impact of combat and parents' combat-induced posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on young children has been examined in a few studies. However, the long-term toll of war captivity on secondary traumatization (ST) and the parental bonding of adult children remain unknown. This study examined ST symptoms and parental bonding among adult children of former prisoners of war (ex-POWs' children) that were compared to adult children of comparable veterans (controls' children). Furthermore, we examined the mediating role of parental bonding and exposure to stress in the association between group and ST symptoms. Design: A correlative, cross-sectional study. Methods: Participants were Israeli ex-POWs' children (N = 98) and controls' children (N = 90), whose fathers fought in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. All participants completed a battery of self-reported questionnaires. Results: Ex-POWs' children reported a higher number of ST symptoms and lower levels of fathers' care, as compared to controls' children. Importantly, exposure to stress stemming from fathers' behaviors and fathers' care was found to mediate the association between research group and ST. Conclusions: Forty years after the war ended, the experience of living with ex-POWs is associated with ex-POWs' children psychological outcome.     

Faithful Witnessing as Practice: Decolonial Readings of Shadows of Your Black Memory and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

This article considers María Lugones's concept of faithful witnessing as a point of departure to think about the ethics and possibilities of faithful witnessing in literary contexts. For Lugones, faithful witnessing is an act of aligning oneself with oppressed peoples against the grain of power and recognizing their humanity, oppression, and resistance despite the lack of institutional endorsement. I engage the work of Linda Tuhiwai Smith, Denise Oliver, and other scholars who offer methodologies and discourses on recognition, witnessing, and resistance. I argue that the feminist philosophical concept of faithful witnessing is a critical element of reading decolonial imaginaries. The article undertakes close readings of two novels in the Afro‐Latinx and Afro‐Hispanic tradition: Donato Ndongo's Shadows of Your Black Memory and Junot Díaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. In these readings, the concept of faithful witnessing enriches the analysis of religious colonization and the gender violence inherent to coloniality.

LA MESURE EXPÉRIMENTALE D'UNE HIÉRARCHIE SOCIALE CHEZ GALLUS DOMESTICUS: V. LA MESURE POST MORTEM DES TRAITS ANATOMIQUES

Les cinq membres survivants d'une hiérarchie sociale, Gallus domesticus mǎle, ont subi diverses mesures physiques et analyses du sang. Dans les mesures physiques il s'agit surtout de la těte, du bec, de la crěte, de la barbe, des jambes, des orteils, des éperons, des intestins, des glandes endocrines, etc. Les analyses du sang se sont composées d'un compte du sang et de la détermination chimique du nitrogène non protéine et de la creatinine. Aucunes de ces mesures n'ont indiqué une relation régulière avec les réflexes sociaux. Il ne semble pas du tout probable que la grandeur de la structure anatomique seule ait une relation importante avec les réflexes sociaux. Ce résultat ne répond pas tout de bon à la question de la fonction physiologique quant au rang dans une hiérarchie sociale, et cette question reste ouverte pour l'investigation expérimentale. On suggère que l'on fait de telles expériences seulement sur les groupes où la dominance en ligne droite est devenue établie et stable.

(Referat) DIE EXPERIMENTELLE MESSUNG EINER SOZIALEN HIERARCHIE BEI GALLUS DOMESTICUS: V. DIE MESSUNG DER ANATOMISCHEN EIGENSCHAFTEN NACH DEM TODE

Die fünf überlebenden Mitglieder einer sozialen Hierarchie, beim männlichen Gallus domesticus, wurden verschiedenen physischen Messungen und Blutuntersuchungen unterzogen. Besonders die physischen Messungen bezogen sich auf Kopf, Schnabel, Kamm, Bart, Beine, Zehen, Sporen, Eingeweide, die endokrinen Drüsen usw. Die Blutanalysen bestanden aus einer Blutzählung und der chemischen Bestimmung des Nichtproteïnstickstoffes und des Kreatinins. Keine dieser Messungen deutet auf ein geordnetes Verhältnis zu den sozialen Reflexen an. Es scheint sehr unwahrscheinlich, dass die Grösse der anatomischen Struktur allein irgendein wichtiges Verhältnis zu den sozialen Reflexen besitzt. Das Resultat löst die Frage der physiologischen Funktion im Verhältnis zur Rangordnung in einer sozialen Hierarchie nicht, und jene Frage bleibt der experimentellen Untersuchung offen. Es wird vorgeschlagen, dass solche Experimente nur auf Grunnen angewandt werden sollten, bei denen die geradlinige Herrschung festgestellt wurde und stabil geworden ist.

Digging beneath the surface: Results from stage one of a qualitative analysis of factors influencing the well-being of trans youth in Quebec

ABSTRACT

Background: The literature on trans youth has been dominated by etiological studies interested in trans experience as a medical phenomenon. An emerging body of literature has begun to document that trans youth are a diverse, vulnerable, yet resilient population, and to investigate the role of various sites of support such as the family, peer groups, institutions, and community spaces in contributing to or impeding trans youth's well-being.

Method: This article presents the results of Stage One of interviews (n = 24) conducted for a Community-Based Participatory Action Research (CBPAR) qualitative research project based in Quebec. It studies the factors that enhance trans youth's well-being as well as the factors of oppression that negatively affect it. This paper offers a brief overview of the anti-oppressive methodology used for this project, emphasizing how CBPAR was combined with Grounded Theory (GT) methods to encourage the direct involvement of communities and the translation of knowledge into action.

Results: We present preliminary categories emerging through the ongoing axial coding process. These categories address trans youth's experiences in and perceptions of various “sites”: 1) healthcare services both for gender-related and general care, 2) other institutional spaces, 3) the family and other social circles, and 4) community spaces.

Conclusion: While much of this study's results support existing evidence on trans youth's experiences, they also provide a more nuanced portrayal of the complex ways in which recognition, as well as non-, mis-, or mal-recognition, influence trans youth's well-being at different sites. We also argue that recognition itself must be considered through the lens of intersectionality.     

Election in Zwingli and Bullinger: A Comparison of Zwingli's Sermonis de providentia dei anamnema (1530) and Bullinger's Oratio de moderatione servanda in negotio Providentiae,Praedestinationis, gratiae et liberi arbitrii (1536)

Abstract

Bullinger is often portrayed both historically and theologically as Zwingli's successor. This expresses the continuity between them, but can fail to make clear Bullinger's independence and distinctiveness. There are striking differences between them, not least in the way they understand and present the doctrine of election. This is evident in a comparison of Zwingli's The Providence of God in 1530 and Bullinger's Providence, Predestination, Grace, and Free Will six years later.¹     

The flow stress contribution of the dislocation 'forest' in bcc lattices

The athermal flow stress contribution by junction reactions of a glide dislocation with a 'forest' of density rho is usually written as tau = alpha mu b rho ^1/2. The strength coefficient alpha has been computed for the bcc lattice by virtual displacement of triple nodes following the method of Puschl et al. (1982, Physica status solidi (a), 74, 211). In the isotropic approximation, the values for glide dislocations with 0, 30, 60 and 90^o character are as alpha = 0.18, 0.21, 0.19 and 0.22 respectively. A comparison with values calculated previously by Frydman is made, and good agreement is found when differences in the cut-off radii of the linear elastic solution are accounted for.
