ABSTRACT

This paper reviews the literature as it relates to psychotherapy and creativity. The focus is on the creative process and the role of the therapist as “artist” in the practice of couple therapy. The theory on which the paper is based in problem-centered with influences from the writing of Satir, humanistic psychology and psychodynamic psychotherapy. The paper attempts to offer suggestions as to how therapists might enhance their innate creative ability when working with couples.  相似文献

Virginia Satir, one of the most influential of the early family therapists, reached millions of people throughout the world through her writings, videotapes, workshops, and personal appearances. Yet the Satir model has never been fully accepted by the mainstream of the family therapy movement. This article introduces Satir and her work, and outlines the conceptual foundations of the model, organized in terms of presuppositions, basic constructs, therapeutic process, and methods, and offers some reasons for this lack of acceptance. The relation of theory to method and practice is the least developed aspect of the Satir model.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The author claims that a process developed by Virginia Satir and called “Family Reconstruction” by her, is the epitome of her contribution to the field of therapy. This article describes the process, its goals and theory, the conditions necessary for an effective therapeutic breakthrough. How this therapeutic process can be powerfully effective in healing couple's relationships is shown. In a final note, Nerin suggests that Satir's model not be dubbed “communication theory,” but called “eco-psychological.”  相似文献

This article represents an attempt to update the reader by bringing into focus some of the more important components of the Satir model. The intrapsychic aspect of therapy is explained in the form if an iceberg metaphor. The use of the Satir family map, or genogram, is illustrated for use in individual and family therapy. Also, the various steps of a Satir model therapy session are listed. The Satir model has developed into a brief, transformational change model while keeping the earlier theoretical base intact.

Abstract

This study tested two hypotheses concerning the nature of family rules about affect which were derived from the systems models of Satir (1967, 1972); Satir, Stachowiak and Taschman (1975); Turner and Gross (1976); and Umana, Gross and Turner (1978). The major hypotheses examined were: 1) family members share common rules about how they should handle their affect and 2) family rules about handling affect differentiate families according to their level of adjustment. Fifty-four family triads of father, mother and an adolescent child filled out questionnaires designed to measure how family members believed that they should behave (ideal) in affective situations and also how they perceived themselves behaving (actual) in the same situations. The results indicated support for the first hypothesis but not for the second. Alternative explanations of the data were offered including the idea that the questionnaire tapped social norms.  相似文献

IntroductionThe purpose of the article is to examine the current literature regarding evidence for positive change in attachment status following Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and to describe how an integrative EMDR and family therapy team model was implemented to improve attachment and symptoms in a child with a history of relational loss and trauma.LiteratureThe EMDR method is briefly described along with the theoretical model that guides the EMDR approach. As well, an overview of attachment theory is provided and its implication for conceptualizing symptoms related to a history of relational trauma. Finally, a literature review is provided regarding current preliminary evidence that EMDR can improve attachment status in children and adults.Clinical findingsA case study is described in which an EMDR and family therapy integrative model improved attachment status and symptoms in a child with a history attachment trauma.ConclusionThe case study and literature review provide preliminary evidence that EMDR may be a promising therapy in the treatment of disorders related to attachment trauma.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The following excerpts are taken from several hours of conversation with Virginia Satir in which Virginia shares her personal reminiscences of herdevelopment as a therapist and the intellectual environment that stimulated some of her most creative work. She reflects on her association with Gregory Bateson and other prominent theorists in the field. In deceptively concise language, she puts forth her own seminal ideas on the complex nature of change and the processes that underlie family therapy and group therapy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Children’s clinical symptoms can often only be understood within their individual and family contexts. However, contemporary research has pointed to the importance of also working with children’s social identities and macrosystem environment when attempting to understand and treat clinical problems. The case of a 10-year-old Dominican-American girl who presented with a significant trauma history, oppositional behavior, and difficulties interacting with her peers is examined using a developmental ecological framework. Attachment theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and multicultural family systems therapy, with a focus on trauma responses, are integrated when exploring the case. Additionally, the benefits of exploring the influence of social identities (race, ethnicity, immigration status/perceived immigration status, and class) are explored via an approach that focus on transformation and healing from oppressive systems by integrating sociopolitical realities in therapy.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Virginia Satir's understanding of the fundamental building block of all human relationships, the triad, surpassed that of her colleagues. She went beyond their themes of conflict, opposition and pathology to emphasize the positive, constructive and nurturing potential of every human triadic interaction. Couples therapy is a triad and the author focuses on this specific context to illustrate some of the rich and varied uses of Satir s theory of triads.  相似文献

SUMMARY

PAIRS (Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills), was developed to effect change in couple relationships using a skill building psycho-educational group forma with psychody-namic underpinnings. The 120 hour workshop uses an integrative approach with cognitive, behavioral, and affective treatments to move couples from nonadaptive relationship patterns to intimacy and pleasure. This article describes the PAIRS Model, developed by Lori H. Gordon with an integrative theory and the practice principles of Satir, Bach, Casriel, and Sager.  相似文献

BackgroundNarrative therapy (White & Epston, 1990) was developed as an approach to counselling, as a response to the power relations that influence people's lives. Its use with people who stutter has been documented. A basic tenet of narrative therapy is that the dominant problem-saturated narrative is challenged by externalizing the problem, in due course facilitating development of an alternative narrative. Within this process, the definitional ceremony involving outsider witnesses is a key procedure used to influence change.AimsThis paper describes definitional ceremonies, and their application within a narrative approach to therapy for stuttering. The analysis of a specific definitional ceremony is presented, leading to an exploration of identity as a public and social achievement.MethodsA definitional ceremony involving a woman who stutters and family members was recorded and analysed using two methods: interpretative phenomenological analysis and Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological analysis. Details of the clinical application of definitional ceremonies with this client are described. Results and conclusionsResults from both methods of analysis were found to be similar. Notable results include the fact that the stuttering per se was not presented as the problem; rather, the impact of stuttering, especially the experience of bullying, was a dominant theme. This paper shows how definitional ceremonies can open opportunities for clients to present themselves in a preferred way, forming the basis for a new story and revised identity. Emerging themes can be identified for reflection and discussion with the client for therapeutic benefit.Educational objectives: (1) to describe and explain to readers the process of narrative therapy, with special attention to the use of definitional ceremonies; (2) to provide detail regarding the clinical processes involved with a specific definitional ceremony with one client; (3) to have the reader appreciate the specific importance of involving outsider witnesses in the therapy process; (4) to discuss the outcomes of the use of this particular definitional ceremony.  相似文献

Summary

Treatment groups for both mothers and children together who have experienced mother assault is a unique therapeutic milieu which has been underutilized in the treatment field. This article presents a 10-week feminist-informed family systems group model as part of a treatment approach for children exposed to family violence and can be used with families of children from pre-school to adolescence. This model provides a context in which the experience of family violence can be debriefed, and issues related to trauma, safety, secrecy, and post-abuse family restructuring can be addressed by family members together. In addition, play and art therapy based interventions are presented and are tailored for the beginning, middle, and end of the group process.  相似文献

Abstract

Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) was developed as a form of family therapy. Recently, these features have blurred. This case study explores how Insoo Kim Berg interacts with multiple family members in SFBT. The results indicate that she used a circular procedure to ensure that all the family members were involved in the process. The analysis demonstrates the importance of purposeful use of language and the influence of systems theory in SFBT. SFBT provides a useful framework that enables a family therapist to work together with families to help them make the changes they want with their own strengths and resources.  相似文献

This article presents the evolution of one of Satir's processes, namely family reconstruction, a psychodramatic reenactment of significant events in three generations of family life. Both the sameness and the differentness of the classical version as developed by Satir and the current shorter version are explored. The Satir model is a growth oriented approach based on the belief that people have the inner resources to resolve problem situations. Within this model, which focuses on what people can become, the therapist and the individual or family members join forces to move from a symptomatic base to wellness.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Virginia Satir recognized self esteem as the culmination of identity development within a nurturing and validating environment. The proposition of this author is that the shame-based identity, on the opposite end of a continuum from self esteem, is the culmination of identity development within an invalidating and contemptuous environment. The perspective presented here is generic and comprehensive, using (he established work of Satir on self esteem and more recent work by other published authors on the subject of shame. The development of the shame-based identity as well as the dynamics of the shame-based family system will be presented and explored.  相似文献
