In the introduction to The Psychology of the Transference (1946), Carl Jung sketched out a theory of “erotic phenomenology” which condenses his teaching about sexuality and romantic love into a very concise summary. But the meaning of this passage is obscured in the English translation given in the Collected Works of C. G. Jung. I propose here a new translation which makes Jung’s meaning clearer, along with a commentary which explains it in the context of Freudian drive theory and German 19th century philosophy. Invoking the concepts of instinct, mind, and Eros (both the passion and the divine figure), Jung’s theory says that male sexual desire can be cultivated or repressed in four distinct ways, each associated with a female symbolic figure or anima image: Eve, Helen, Mary and Sophia.  相似文献

The possible moderating functions of prayer duration and belief in prayer on the prayer–well-being relation were examined. A multidimensional self-report measure of prayer including five types of prayer—Supplication, Thanksgiving, Adoration, Confession, and Reception—as well as measures of prayer duration, belief in prayer, and life satisfaction were used. On the basis of a sample of 345 Jewish religious pray-ers living in Israel it was found that for men all five types of prayer were directly related to life satisfaction. No moderating effects were found. In contrast, for women, although no significant direct relations were found between prayer type and life satisfaction, prayer duration moderated the relation between Supplication, Confession, and Reception with life satisfaction. In addition, significant three-way interactions (Prayer Type × Prayer Duration × Prayer Belief) were found for all five types of prayer. For women with a high belief in prayer, a positive prayer—well-being relation emerged when prayer duration was long, and a negative prayer—well-being relation emerged when prayer duration was short. In contrast, for women with a low belief in prayer, the opposite pattern emerged; lengthy prayer was negatively related to well-being, whereas short prayer was positively related to well-being. An explanation based on self-attributions of prayer sincerity is offered.  相似文献

Abstract

This study1 explores the experience of the body for contemporary female mystics. It is an exploration in how women mystics of today—those who have devoted most of their lifetime to prayer, meditation, and spiritual service—make sense of the body. What is the relationship between spirit and body, God and flesh, for such women? Is it a relationship of tension or even opposition, and how does it evolve over time? These are some of the questions that guided my investigation. The impulse to understand how the body is experienced and understood by such women was felt by me as both a longing to challenge, deepen, and refine my awareness and understanding of spirit and the body, specifically for women mystics. I also felt this as a burning in the heart, an urgent desire to connect and bridge the larger world of matter and that of spirit, to inquire into that dimension where flesh and spirit are not two, but one. I believe that this impulse to understand the relationship between body and spirit is both personal and quite possibly collective. My hope is that this research will serve as one step to further our collective understanding of human embodiment.  相似文献

Western heterosexual culture surrounds the homosexually inclined boy in a climate of erotic overstimulation that powerfully affects his development and adult sexual adaptation. This assertion is illustrated through a case presentation of a homosexual man who shared a bed with his brother from childhood into adolescence. Analysis of the patient's transference enactment--repeatedly falling asleep on the couch--gradually revealed the psychic impact of this everyday overstimulation: the creation of a tantalized inner world of longing. The regular occurrence and developmental understanding of adolescent homosexual boys' unrequited love affairs with adolescent heterosexual boys are described and explored. Finally, the overstimulation of everyday life is proposed as a new model for understanding certain behavioral aspects of male homosexuality, such as the avoidance of rough-and-tumble play in childhood and homosexual cruising.  相似文献
