In two experiments rats were preexposed to neutral stimuli. Both experiments used a between-subjects design in which a paired group was preexposed to intermixed presentations of A --> Band AX, and an unpaired control group was preexposed to intermixed presentations of A, B, and AX. After the conditioning of B, in Experiment 1, conditioned responding to X was acquired more slowly in the paired than in the unpaired group. Furthermore, in Experiment 2, X reduced conditioned responding to a separately trained excitor in a summation test but only in the paired group. Together, these results provide evidence of an inhibitory form of sensory preconditioning.  相似文献

In each of two experiments, two groups of rats were exposed to three flavoured solutions: A (citric acid), B (salt), and AX (a compound of citric acid and saccharin). Both experiments used a between-subjects design in which a paired group received presentations of A followed by B, alternating with presentations of AX (i.e., A → B/AX), and an unpaired group received alternating presentations of A, B, and AX (i.e., A/B/AX). This arrangement was expected to establish X as an inhibitor of B in group paired but not in group unpaired. In Experiment 1, after preexposure all subjects received a single presentation of an XB compound, then experienced sodium depletion, and were tested for their consumption of X, which was greater in group unpaired than in group paired. In Experiment 2, after preexposure, all subjects received four presentations of a new flavour, C, in compound with B and subsequently, under sodium depletion, were tested for consumption of XC. Intake of the XC compound was less in group paired than in group unpaired. These results suggest that, in group paired, X acquired an inhibitory relationship with B both retarding the acquisition of an excitatory association with B (retardation test, Experiment 1) and reducing the response to a new stimulus, C, strongly associated to B (summation test, Experiment 2). These results provide direct evidence of inhibition between two neutral stimuli and, therefore, of inhibitory sensory preconditioning.  相似文献

During sensory preconditioning, rats were given two distinct flavors (saccharin and coffee) in sequence with 0, 9, or 27 sec between the two flavors. A control group received the flavors unpaired. In subsequent training, the second flavor preceded sucrose by 5 min. Later, the subjects that had had 0- or 9-sec delays between the two flavors showed a significant preference for the flavor not directly reinforced, whereas those that had had a 27-sec delay showed only a marginally significant preference. Although taste aversions have been produced using these methods, this is the first demonstration of conditioned preferences for flavors not directly associated with the reinforcers. These results offer an alternative way to study flavor-flavor learning.  相似文献

Sensory preconditioning was first demonstrated in Pavlov's laboratory in 1931/32, rather than discovered by Brogden in 1939. Pavlov included nonassociative controls, forward pairing of the indifferent stimuli before reinforcing the second one with shock, and he avoided the development of inhibition to the compound by using a moving visual stimulus and a sound like that of scurrying mice, which both had persistent orienting reactions. Pavlov concluded that the indifferent stimuli were associated by temporal contiguity similar to human associations between successively spoken works. He did not consider the possibility of mediation via the orienting reactions.  相似文献

A sequence of uncorrelated randomly patterned visual stimuli (“visual noise”) is normally seen as a field of particles in “Brownian motion.” When each frame of the sequence is followed by a blank flash superimposed on the same region of the visual field, the apparent structure of the noise field is strikingly altered, its form varying with the time interval between frame and flash. At a critical interval, many dots seem to cohere, to form maggot-like objects.

Some of the factors determining this critical interval have been studied. They include the brightness, repetition frequency and exposure duration of the noise field, and the distance of its retinal image from the fovea.

The critical interval for “perceptual blanking” is quite different from that for the “maggot effect,” but the two show a suggestively similar dependence upon the duty cycle of the noise display.

It is of some neurological interest that the phenomenon is not appreciably visible with dichoptic mixing of noise and blank stimuli.  相似文献

The conflict between present and future consumption lies at the heart of resource dilemmas (RDs), yet the role of time has received little attention in this research area. Emphasis was on factors related to the social rather than the temporal conflict inherent in an RD. We propose a model that deals explicitly with the temporal distribution of outcomes. The model combines three basic elements: a simple algebraic model, representing the RD's payoff structure; a growth function, reflecting the autonomous growth of the resource pool; and a discount function, describing how the temporal distance of outcomes affects their perceived value. The model provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the role of temporal factors in RD situations. It enables us to identify four relevant temporal RD characteristics (people's discount rates, their time horizon, the inter-trial delay, and the pool's growth rate) and to describe how these would be expected to affect people's tendency to cooperate. Theoretical, methodological and practical implications of the work are briefly discussed.  相似文献
