A hardware and software interface system from International Data and Acquisition and Control, Inc. (IDAC) is reviewed. The IDAC system comes with spreadsheet software compatible for either Macintosh or IBM microcomputers. I prefer to use the IDAC hardware with my own software written in TrueBasic and spreadsheet macros. The entire system is easy to use and is currently in use for our undergraduate Learning Laboratory.  相似文献

Psychology users of the Unix operating system responded to questionnaire items concerning the use of Unix, the ease of learning and using Unix, and the value and quality of the system for their research needs. A system for mathematically identifying unknown nonlinear systems based upon Wiener kernels and G-functionals is presented as an example of the sophisticated analyses of electrophysiological and behavioral data made possible by the introduction of powerful digital computers to the laboratory environment. The applicability of these methods to a wide variety of systems is emphasized. By measuring the response of the unknown system to appropriate white noise stimulation, data may be obtained which are sufficient for the characterization of the system under test. The only restrictions upon the unknown system is that it be approximately stationary during the period of measurement and that its output depend upon its input in the finite past. Various pretests to evaluate the applicability of the method are presented. Simple FORTRAN programs that clarify the methods of computation are given for the preprocessing of data, the analysis of lower-order kernels, the synthesis of system response from the computed kernels, and the computation of the proportion of the variance in the systems output which is accounted for by the kernels zero, one, and two. These programs may be implemented on a digital laboratory computer of moderate size. Analysis may be performed either on-line or after data collection, depending upon the temporal characteristics of the system under test. This method represents one of the few analytical techniques presently available for the characterization of both linear and nonlinear systems. For this reason, it constitutes a uniquely powerful tool for many branches of psychology. Successful applications of this method to electrophysiological and behavioral data are mentioned. Limiting factors in the use of Wiener kernel analysis are also discussed.  相似文献

Several standard solutions have been developed for problems encountered when monitoring laboratory response sensors with microcomputers. These problems include voltage-level translation, power-supply isolation, contact debouncing, and temporary data storage. Data storage has typically been accomplished through the use of edge-sensitive devices, which introduce difficulties when a researcher wishes to monitor the duration of a response. A circuit is described that includes an optoisolator with a silicon-controlled rectifier at its output stage. The circuit acts as a latch for the detection of brief responses, and, because it is not edge-sensitive, it can also be used to record the duration of sustained responses.  相似文献

The Maxwellian optical system described here is fully automated in both experimental control for psychophysical instrumentation and data gathering using a personal computer (PC) with simple interfacing and input/output processing. The system features PC-based high-speed noise-free liquid-crystal shutter control, automated light control, glow modulator tube control, and filter/wedge control. The Radio Shack color computer is examined from the viewpoint of capabilities needed to program, time, control, and acquire data from typical cognitive psychology experiments. Its capabilities are compared with those of the alternative inexpensive microcomputers discussed in an earlier article (Reed, 1980). The paper also includes a 6809 assembly language routine that permits the measurement of reaction times in video horizontal scan (HS = 4/63 msec) units without hardware modifications and an RSCC BASIC program for unbiased conversion of HS units to milliseconds.  相似文献

Implementation of a computer component requires consideration of differences among students, objectives and teaching style of the instructor, course level and content, and courseware to be used. The strategies are compared in terms of cost, complexity, flexibility, and speed in typical psychology laboratory tasks. This paper discusses the design and development of an interdisciplinary social science computer laboratory for teaching undergraduate research methods courses and research components of applied and theoretical courses. The U.S. Census of the Population, a database commonly used in all of the social sciences, is used in order to give students research experience and to avoid ethical problems involved in working with animal and human subjects in an undergraduate course. In a previous paper we developed a general theory of input/output logics. These are operations resembling inference, but where inputs need not be included among outputs, and outputs need not be reusable as inputs. In the present paper we study what happens when they are constrained to render output consistent with input. This is of interest for deontic logic, where it provides a manner of handling contrary-to-duty obligations. Our procedure is to constrain the set of generators of the input/output system, considering only the maximal subsets that do not yield output conflicting with a given input. When inputs are authorised to reappear as outputs, both maxichoice revision in the sense of Alchourrón/Makinson and the default logic of Poole emerge as special cases, and there is a close relation with Reiter default logic. However, our focus is on the general case where inputs need not be outputs. We show in what contexts the consistency of input with output may be reduced to its consistency with a truth-functional combination of components of generators, and under what conditions constrained output may be obtained by a derivation that is constrained at every step.  相似文献

RELEASE FROM PI is a computer-controlled participatory module designed for use by students in laboratory sections of an experimental psychology course. It allows the student subjects to trace their recall performance across sets of four lists when the fourth list changes in physical characteristics or semantic category. The performance of students participating in this computer module was compared with that of students receiving a traditional procedure with a human experimenter. All other aspects of the laboratory session were equated as much as possible. The recall data showed that the traditional procedure produced better recall and greater release with a semantic shift. However, both methods resulted in roughly equivalent learning (as measured by multiple-choice questions) and student evaluation ratings. Implications for the use of computers in instruction and research are examined.  相似文献
