Case Study: The Case of Joyce F.

This case review identifies the use of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) principles and concepts while detailing the plight and fight of one woman in overcomingagoraphobia with panic attacks. It illustrates how the frequency of anxiety disorder symptoms can be lessened, their intensity minimized and their duration reduced. Techniques plus the value of persistence, boldness, risk taking, eagerness to learn, gumption and guts in confronting her symptoms cognitively, emotively and behaviorally are meant to come through the following narrative explanation.     

Testing Case Formulation Hypotheses in Psychotherapy: Two Case Examples

We describe two cases that illustrate and demonstrate the effectiveness of a case formulation–driven approach to psychotherapy in which the therapist, in collaboration with the patient, develops a hypothesis (formulation) about the psychological mechanisms that cause and maintain the patient’s difficulties, uses the formulation to guide intervention, and collects data to test the formulation and evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention plan. As shown by the cases reported here, a key strength of this collaborative empirical process is that it enables the patient and therapist to quickly determine when a treatment is failing and take action to rescue it.     

Using Case Documentation to Strengthen Counselor Trainees' Case Conceptualization Skills

A format for organizing case notes is presented that could increase counselor trainees' case conceptualization skills. The STIPS format of case note writing consists of 5 major sections, including documenting clients' current Signs and symptoms, Topics discussed in counseling, counseling Interventions used, clients' Progress and counselors' continuing plan for treatment, and finally, any Special issues of importance regarding clients (e.g., suicidality). The structure and design of this STIPS format is intended to enhance trainees' ability to acquire relevant facts about clients, better understand clients' presenting problems, better monitor counseling processes, and better evaluate and adjust treatment interventions.     

Case and Reanalysis

In this paper we discuss an asymmetry in the Case system of German and its implications for human sentence processing: the asymmetry between nominative/accusative and dative case. Starting from the assumption that dative case has a distinct grammatical representation--dative DPs are embedded into an extra structural layer KP--the results of two experiments will be presented, which show that dative assignment during reanalysis is accompanied by additional processing operations that are not needed when accusative or nominative are assigned. In particular, we show that dative assignment during reanalysis triggers reaccess to the mental lexicon, giving rise to greater processing difficulty. We conclude with a discussion of empirical and theoretical consequences of our findings.

Creativity in Biology: A Major Case and a Minor Case

Sydney Brenner and Francois Jacob's discovery of messenger RNA—which carries the information for making protein from the DNA to the ribosomes—shows how creativity requires a variety of skills and the ability to integrate a considerable amount of knowledge. Most important was the correct formulation of the problem. Not only did the discovery require a theoretical understanding, but also considerable experimental skills. It provides an example of sudden illumination. The concept of positional information in relation to the development of pattern during embryonic development is another example of a change in paradigm in cell biology from metabolism to information. It was based on the aesthetic conviction that there must be general mechanisms for converting genetic information into spatial pattern.
