ABSTRACT

Retirement Community living sponsored by groups of churches or related, in any direct sense, to a purpose that is called Christian, should, in very specific ways, demonstrate that faith in Christ is an integral part of resident life.

An organization, within the retirement community of Holly Hall in Houston, Texas, seeks to fulfill that requirement by a deliberate commitment to what is called Christian Life Emphasis. It involves a variety of bonding rituals and a ministry of resident to resident that enables spiritual awareness to permeate the continuum of care.  相似文献

Abstract

Queer readings of the Bible are sometimes understood to be irrelevant for uses of the Bible in theology, theological education, and ministry. This address challenges that understanding by considering ways in which portions of the Bible take positions vis-à-vis religious tradition that parallel moves made in queer theory and queer theology. Using the task of preaching as an example, the address suggests that queer readings can be useful for the practice of Christian ministry even as such readings challenge certain ‘common-sense’ conceptions of ministry, theological education, and religious community.  相似文献

Summary

This article examines the role of psychosocial and behavioral dimensions of terrorism that influence community preparedness and homeland defense efforts. Public health interventions will fail if people do not follow the recommendations. A broader public health model is applied to help identify the interactions between risk and safety appraisals, social factors, and behavioral response to uncertain and stressful situations. Community preparedness would benefit by linking disparate programmatic and advocacy initiatives that already exist. It stands to reason that improving the cohesiveness of existing systems of social organization would strengthen community resilience and serve as effective countermeasures for terrorism.  相似文献

The 'health and prosperity gospel' of the so-called 'Faith ministries' can be regarded as one of the fastest growing religious movements on a global scale. This article seeks to explore the symbolic significance of the healing practices of this distinct form of neo-Pentecostalism originating in North America. The principal emphasis is upon their healing meetings and the dramatisation of the core beliefs and values of one typical Faith ministry. The article is based upon ethnographic research and presents a comment on the nature of some contemporary forms of evangelical Christianity that bring a syncretic mixture of fundamentalism and this-worldly concerns.  相似文献

Background and Objectives: Chronic stress is implicated in many theories as a contributor to a wide range of physical and mental health problems. The current study describes the development of a chronic stress measure that was based on the UCLA Life Stress Interview (LSI) and adapted in collaboration with community partners for use in a large community health study of low-income, ethnically diverse parents of infants in the USA (Community Child Health Network [CCHN]). We describe the instrument, its purpose and adaptations, implementation, and results of a reliability study in a subsample of the larger study cohort. Design and Methods: Interviews with 272 mothers were included in the present study. Chronic stress was assessed using the CCHN LSI, an instrument designed for administration by trained community interviewers to assess four domains of chronic stress, each rated by interviewers. Results: Significant correlations ranging from small to moderate in size between chronic stress scores on this measure, other measures of stress, biomarkers of allostatic load, and mental health provide initial evidence of construct and concurrent validity. Reliability data for interviewer ratings are also provided. Conclusions: This relatively brief interview (15 minutes) is available for use and may be a valuable tool for researchers seeking to measure chronic stress reliably and validly in future studies with time constraints.  相似文献

Abstract

At the ‘Embodied Ministry: Gender, Sexuality and Formation’ conference at which the articles in this special issue were delivered, three people in active ministry in different denominations — United Reformed Church, Metropolitan Community Church and Roman Catholic — were invited to take part in a panel discussion on gender and sexuality in the pastoral encounter. Their remarks were originally delivered in this conversational context. Martin Pendergast chaired this panel discussion.  相似文献

Clergy suffer from chronic disease rates that are higher than those of non-clergy. Health interventions for clergy are needed, and some exist, although none to date have been described in the literature. Life of Leaders is a clergy health intervention designed with particular attention to the lifestyle and beliefs of United Methodist clergy, directed by Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare Center of Excellence in Faith and Health. It consists of a two-day retreat of a comprehensive executive physical and leadership development process. Its guiding principles include a focus on personal assets, multi-disciplinary, integrated care, and an emphasis on the contexts of ministry for the poor and community leadership. Consistent with calls to intervene on clergy health across multiple ecological levels, Life of Leaders intervenes at the individual and interpersonal levels, with potential for congregational and religious denominational change. Persons wishing to improve the health of clergy may wish to implement Life of Leaders or borrow from its guiding principles.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Community building includes but is greater than providing fellowship. Community building promotes connection, belonging, and a sense of togetherness. Based upon the needs of older adults, community building is defined as an engagement that is mutually supportive and stimulating. Community building doesn't just happen naturally. There are important guidelines and categorization that assist in effective planning. Community building can happen any time a person is personally engaged with another and thus, with some intentionality, can happen at worship, committee meetings, as well as pot lucks and fun activities.  相似文献

Articles published in the two most prominent journals of community psychology in North America, the American Journal of Community Psychology (AJCP) and Journal of Community Psychology (JCP), provide a clear indicator of trends in community research and practice. An examination of community psychology's history and scholarship suggests that the field has reduced its emphasis on promoting mental health, well‐being, and liberation of individuals with serious mental illnesses over the past several decades. To further investigate this claim, the current review presents an analysis of articles relevant to community mental health (N = 307) published in the American Journal of Community Psychology (AJCP) and Journal of Community Psychology (JCP) from 1973 to 2015. The review focuses on article characteristics (e.g., type of article and methods employed), author characteristics, topic areas, and theoretical frameworks. Results document a downward trend in published articles from the mid‐1980s to mid‐2000s, with a substantial increase in published work between 2006 and 2015. A majority of articles were empirical and employed quantitative methods. The most frequent topic area was community mental health centers and services (n = 49), but the past three decades demonstrate a clear shift away from mental health service provision to address pressing social issues that impact community mental health, particularly homelessness (n = 42) and community integration of adults with serious mental illnesses (n = 40). Findings reflect both the past and present state of community psychology and suggest promising directions for re‐engaging with community mental health and fostering well‐being, inclusion, and liberation of adults experiencing serious mental health challenges.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The final building block is deciding what program fits ministry goals, congregational resources and skills, and the needs of the older adults who will benefit from this ministry. A final form is used to choose, from the many options gathered in the previous steps, which ministries to begin, at this time, for this group of people, with these specific resources, be they congregational resources or those from community collaboration. Choosing target dates for specific tasks and assigning those tasks to specific committee member is crucial for success. The place of attendance in declaring success or failure is discussed. Using the OAM mission statement as a basis for continuing evaluation is suggested.  相似文献

Abstract

Community engagement (CE) is gaining prominence in global health research. A number of ethical goals–spanning the instrumental, intrinsic, and transformative–have been ascribed to CE in global health research. This paper draws attention to an additional transformative value that CE is not typically linked to but that seems very relevant: solidarity. Both are concerned with building relationships and connecting parties that are distant from one another. This paper first argues that furthering solidarity should be recognized as another ethical goal for CE in global health research. It contends that, over time, CE can build the bases of solidaristic relationships—moral imagination, recognition, understanding, empathy—between researchers and community members. Applying concepts from existing accounts of solidarity, the paper develops preliminary ideas about who should be engaged and how to advance solidarity. The proposed approach is compared to current CE practice in global health research. Finally, the paper briefly considers how solidaristic CE could affect how global health research is performed.  相似文献

Summary

A Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) methodology can assist Family Practice faculty in implementing clinical and teaching activities designed to address interpersonal violence against adult women. The traditional COPC steps are as follows: (1) define the practice population; (2) assess a specific health problem; (3) develop and implement a strategy to address the issue; and (4) evaluate the impact of the intervention. At Ramsey Family Medicine we've developed a conceptual tool we call “the wheel” of community medicine which depicts the five arenas where resident physicians can work to end domestic violence: in the exam room; within the clinic; as part of a network of providers; within the larger community; and, as a part of a state or national initiative. We've also developed an operational tool called “the matrix” of community medicine which outlines specific COPC activities in each of the aforementioned arenas. We've arranged the matrix to apply to clinical practice and resident education activities regarding abuse intervention and prevention at Ramsey. This approach stresses partnerships with community organizations with expertise and commitment to ending domestic violence.  相似文献

Abstract

The assessment of community satisfaction as a global concept has until now been based on measures that in various ways have been inadequate. In the present study, alternative approaches to devising community satisfaction scales were reviewed and a new General Community Satisfaction Scale (GCSS) was presented. Results from factor analyses of data obtained in two divergent communities, with sample sizes of 622 and 385, respectively, vindicated the measure in the context of a diversity of other measures assessing more specific community attributes. The GCSS was shown to be highly reliable with an alpha coefficient value of .97 in each community and to have a high degree of concurrent validity.  相似文献

This article explores the relationship between a newly emerging world religion, the Baha'i Faith, and the cognitive-developmental school of psychology. It does so by illustrating three major concepts shared by the protagonists of cognitive-developmentalism, such as Piaget and Kohlberg, and the primary authors of the sacred writings of the Baha'i Faith: Baha'u'llah, ‘Abdu'l-Baha, and Shoghi Effendi. These concepts include (a) a developmental teleology, (b) the stage-like nature of development, and (c) the importance of a cognitive, or epistemic focus. It is intended that this article chart an avenue of communication between members of the Baha'i Faith and the therapeutic community over topics of mutual interest (cf. Laszlo, 1989a, 1989b).  相似文献

SUMMARY

What is the purpose for an older adult ministry within a congregation? It is not a program but a process of spiritual care, spiritual development, and spiritual formation as older adults are confronted with challenges to their spiritual perspectives due to the changes inherent in the process of aging. The experience of aging is a teacher that can be denied only with great peril to the person. Various views of aging as a spiritual journey are shared. The support and guiding of the spiritual perspectives of older adults is the core purpose for an older adult ministry in a congregation. This central purpose must be overtly expressed through the writing of a mission statement for older adult ministry that will be a yardstick not only for evaluating present ministries but also for guiding their future efforts. A simple, easy-to-use method of developing a mission statement is shared.  相似文献

Background/ObjectiveCollaboRATE is a 3-item self-report measure of the patient experience of shared decision-making (SDM) process. The objective of this study is to assess the psychometric properties of CollaboRATE in community mental health care.MethodA cross-sectional study was conducted at a Community Mental Health Center of the Canary Islands Health Service. Two hundred and fifty consecutive psychiatric outpatients were invited to participate. Of those, 191 accepted (76.40% of response rate) and completed the CollaboRATE, the Control Preferences Scale (CPS), and a form with sociodemographic and clinical variables.ResultsExploratory factor analysis ratified the unidimensionality of the measure. High internal consistency was found (α Cronbach = .95, Guttman's λ = .93, and ω = .95). Strong positive correlations (p < .0001) were found between the CollaboRATE and the CPS. Only 39.80% of respondents gave the best possible score on CollaboRATE.ConclusionsThis study provides evidence for the reliability and validity of the Spanish version of the CollaboRATE as a measure of SDM. The measure is quick to complete and feasible for use in outpatient mental health care. At present, a significative number of psychiatric outpatients are not involved in SDM. The use of this measure in psychiatric routine care can be a key tool in assessing and implementing SDM.  相似文献

This is an autoethnography of one community psychologist's reflections on the abrupt conclusion of a project that resulted in the dismantlement of a Latinx Student Union at a public middle school in the Pacific Northwest. Gloria Anzaldúa's (Borderlands/La Frontera: The new mestiza, Aunt Lute Books, San Francisco, 2002) notion of nepantla is used to situate how an individual's personal identities often intersects with their professional identities in ways that collide within the research environment. Drawing on the “heart work” core competencies within the field of community psychology (The Community Psychologist, 45, 2012, 8; American Journal of Community Psychology, 55, 2015, 266) and extending the dialogue of feminist community psychologists engaged in narrative work (American Journal of Community Psychology, 37, 2006, 157; American Journal of Community Psychology, 37, 2006, 267; Feminist research practice: A primer, Sage, Los Angeles, 2014; American Journal of Community Psychology, 28, 2000, 883), the author addresses why it is important for researchers of Color engaged in community collaborations to reflect on projects that have unraveled to understand how their positionality shifts within social contexts.  相似文献

Summary

Intimate partner violence-assault by a spouse, ex-spouse, intimate friend or ex-friend-is the most common cause of injury for women and a serious public health problem. As a result, the American Medical Association has recognized physicians' ethical obligation to diagnose and treat partner violence, and called for new models of training. In this article, we review literature on the health care system's response to domestic violence. We then describe the Family Peace Project, a community oriented model for training health care professionals to identify, treat and prevent partner violence in primary health care settings. This training program provides knowledge, clinical skills and a sense of professional empowerment. Unique features of this program include: involvement of community mentors (survivors of family violence) as program faculty; training in specific clinical skills and protocols for screening, assessment and intervention; a hands-on assessment of community resources; coinmunity service; and, creation of an award winning web site to promote dissemination of the training program.  相似文献
